Can anyone tell me who the most successful manager for any team in the world that has played for the team theve managed, is Big Jock up there or evn tops.

Bob Paisley would certainly be in with a shout I think. Recent times maybe Pep or Zidane but don't think their numbers would match up.

{Ed007's Note - Simone at Atletico, Cruyff at Barca? The 10 league titles Stein won probably puts him near the top if not the top spot I'd reckon.}

He's certainly up there. Would be between Stein or Valeriy Lobanovskyi for sure. Suppose it would depend how it was weighed up. The Ukranian had some very good European sides but never quite won the Big Cup.

Jock Stein had a brilliant record at reaching domestic cup finals when he was the Celtic manager.

He joined in March 1965 and Jock reached every domestic cup final until his car accident in 1975,with the exception of the 1968 Scottish Cup Final.

Celtic also reached the 1964/ 65 League Cup final before Jock joined.
(Celtic were absent from only 1 final in 11 full seasons)

Jock maybe should’ve been more successful because Celtic lost loads of domestic Cup finals and the Feyenoord European Cup final, when we were hot favourites.

Rangers took advantage of when Jock was recovering from his accident because they won the Treble in the 1975/ 76 season.

It will depend on how you are defining success.

Is it number of trophies won?

Is it the difficulty of the trophies won, i. e. the league they were won, the competition itself (European Cup) ?

Valeriy Lobanovskyi will come close to Stein if we are only considering trophies won for the team you played for and managed.

Think Stein won 25 major honours as the Celtic manager. Valeriy Lobanovskyi is there or there abouts (could not find a full breakdown of the trophies he won at Dynamo Kiev) .

Don't think there are any other contenders as very few managers have actually won 25 or more trophies.

Alex Ferguson has won the most trophies and only person remotely close to him is Pep.

Mick the genius must be up there ??.

13 Feb 2024 15:06:22
Yeah a was thinking major trophies, league, cups, europe. thanks for replys a had an idea JS would be close.

13 Feb 2024 15:11:18
Ano Ancelotti won a lot but nvr played for all the teams he won with.

13 Feb 2024 21:13:02
Stein was undoubtedly very successful as a manager but Celtic were still in the doldrums when he was a player with us .

13 Feb 2024 21:15:10
Willie Maley won 30 major trophies as manager of Celtic quite remarkable considering there was only the league and Scottish cup to play for. That beats any of those mentioned.

13 Feb 2024 21:41:36
Good shout oldkilly.

13 Feb 2024 21:53:25
Willie Maley of Celtic and Bill Struth of Rangers both won 30 major trophies, as managers of the Glasgow clubs.

13 Feb 2024 22:27:36
Maley, struth, Stein, probably top 3 in world then not a bad achievement for Scottish Football, ok a get the Standards in Scottish football but in my opinion the Lisbon lions were the greatest of them all, including the fantastic Ac Milan team of Baresi Maldini ect.

13 Feb 2024 22:48:07
Hi Buzz hope you are well, Bill Struth did win 30 majors but two of them were League Cups a competition that was founded Six years after Maley retired as manager of Celtic.

13 Feb 2024 23:33:34
I hope your keeping well also oldkilly.
I noticed his included a couple of league cups. ?.

Stein was a phenomenal manager, there is no doubt about . He did lose finals especially league Cup finals .
He blotted his copy book once in a very big way and quite a few Celtic players who he moved on in the early 1970’s were not slow after they started playing for new clubs, to write newspaper articles pointing the finger at Jock .
They claimed he came back from spying on Feyenoord that he said they were a very poor team . He said final was as good as over . Stein also changed team and formation dropping young George Connolly who was a star midfielder.
Feyenoord beat. us easily in midfield.
Players felt Stein didn’t want to take any of blame and relations between Stein and players was never the same.
