He's a divisive character Mally, me I have no time for him but my son loves all that sort of thing. It's probably the same within my wider group of friends, some do and some don't. He's certainly not shy. If his story is true then I can understand where his views come from, any of us would no doubt feel the same. What I dislike is the masses who jump on the bandwagon who all of a sudden claim to have family members who were caught up in the struggles and all that nonsense. It's like Americans who claim to be Irish, mostly it's just not true.

Limerick Celt

Pray tell what has James McLean said or done that you find objectionable?

I’m intrigued.

{Ed007's Note - I'd also be interested on Limerickcelt's opinion on people like Eddie Murphy, Oprah Winfrey or the late great Muhammad Ali who were all born in the US but identify themselves as African-American?}

I l sick of listening to all sorts of groups who want to be treated like everybody else from behind banners that proclaim how special and different they are.

{Ed007's Note - The vast majority of Scottish people felt the same way - and a lot still do - when my grandfather came over here from Ireland.
I mean how dare those pesky Irish Catholics come over here looking to work and be treated the same as the Scottish Protestants, it's a completely absurd idea. Coming over here and taking our jobs and using our NHS!
We didn't fight 2 World Wars so that everybody should and could have the freedom to live where they wanted without fear of persecution you know.
Do you know that there are women, yes actual real women that have jobs now. Who's looking after the house and raising their kids while they're out working - once we gave them the vote it was all downhill from there.
Feck all that equality bollox eh??

Sometimes we can be shamed of the words and deeds of a fellow country man. History and ill treatment cannot be swept under the carpet in an attempt to re write History . James Mc Clean is a hero among most decent people living in
Demi-Province for doing what was right because it was the right thing to do . He knew he and his family were at great danger from cowards who were brave people when hidden in crowds .

{Ed007's Note - As MON said the other day when he fully backed McClean's stance:

"James McClean, as a person, has more courage in his little finger than I have in my whole body, believe it or not."

18 Oct 2023 17:26:37
james mcclean is just another easy target for sectarian abuse from cowards who have actually no idea where the lad comes from and what he witnessed. I fully support him in his stance to refuse to wear a blood stained poppy. like james i am a county derry man who has suffer not only sectarian abuse but also attempts on my life and intimidation of myself and my family . so i know fully know what he is going through. supporting celtic was my crime to the loyalist deathsquads . Each to their own unless you are a irish catholic from the six counties.

It's a bit like what is going on in Gaza, two sides who cannot agree, a third party stiring up both sides, and innocent people stuck in the middle.

There are absolutely no winners.

In Scotland and the Demi-Province, if you stand up for your Nationalist and Republican rights, the media and Brit’s Gov create an image of u being sub human. Jim McClean stirs their negative sectarian bowl of hatred. MO'N is 100% right talking about Jim McClean’s bravery
May God continue to protect him, his beautiful wife and children.

Ed you will be delighted to know that I have zero opinion about Eddie Murphy, Oprah Winfrey or the late great Muhammad Ali and their wish to be identified as African-Americans. I just don't care that much about them to be interested.

{Ed007's Note - So what's your problem with people who class themselves as Irish-American are ethnic Irish - people who's family originally came from Ireland - and they are as much a part of the Irish diaspora as anyone else.}

19 Oct 2023 17:39:39
Muhammad Ali is a legend of a man IMHO.

20 Oct 2023 19:18:28
Ed007 you've got me all wrong I have no problem with Irish-Americans at all if they are actually Irish-American but its amazing that nearly every other American i've encountered claims that their grand mother or great grandmother was Irish. Can't be true.

{Ed007's Note - Well they make up around 10% of the entire US population, 30 odd million people (some sources say 36 million) so roughly 1 out of every 10 people in the US are Irish-American.
It is estimated that over 6 million Irish people have emigrated to the US since 1820 with estimates that over 2 million people - about a quarter of the Irish population - emigrated to the United States in a 10 year period enveloping An Gorta Mor (1845-1852).
That's a lot of Irish and a Hell of a lot of kids Irish kids being born in the US.
There's about double the amount of Irish-Americans than there is Italian-Americans with the Irish-Americans the 3rd biggest ethnicity in the US behind German-Americans and the Mexican-Americans.
There's a good chance that people who claim to be Irish-American actually will be and from experience a lot of them have looked into their ancestry and can tell you where their family is originally from.}
