Buzz bomb

There is something happening to football

Money is coming easier and easier in bigger and bigger bundles to players who are less and less talented or proven.

Like an infestation, there is now N opportunity to work hard, get your break and very quickly rest on your laurels and still be a multi millionaire for sitting on your bum or hiding during games

The highlights shows show the good bits and ignore the not so good bits

Football is less and less enjoyed these days as the disconnect between fans and players widens. no loyalty . no consistency. no desire to the extent witnessed back in the oneill years .

The game needs to rebalance

Competition of everything

We have our little back water league but internationally it compares awfully badly

It's a real shame

The soul has been ripped out the heart of football, even international football

Others will have a view, and whilst no fans present has made it worse lx I think there has been a deep malaise for a long time and yes " Jose" isn't what he was

He was great at inter and great at oporto and Chelsea

Long time ago.

Lubo
A step in the right direction would be to put a cap on players wages.
I thought with C. V the new contracts wouldn’t be as lucrative but it doesn’t seem to be making any difference.
Money has also made International Football less appealing to the players because of the money that’s involved in club football.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - David Alaba's agent is demanding €350k per week and that's him dropped it down from the initial €400k that was put on the table as a "starting point" in their negotiations with Bayern Munich. Bayern are standing firm and won't agree to that and so far Inter Milan, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City have said they aren't interested at that level of salary.
I really don't see much changing money wise at the top level of the game, Leon but Covid could certainly cause problems for so called smaller clubs - and I include Celtic in that - the longer things go on. As long as the Pub League and other big leagues can televise games then the money keeps rolling in but in leagues where clubs rely more on matchday income there will be problems in the long term without crowds.}

13 Sep 2020 21:00:44
Your right Ed.
The gap is going to increase between the big leagues and the rest.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I've been saying it for years mate but the quicker they all bugger off and start their Super League the better it'll be for the rest of football.}

13 Sep 2020 22:04:08
Sky tv, bt, premier sport, uefa, fifa, and every other money making organisation is responsable for the situation football now find's it's self in. No longer is it possible to achìve what our club did in 1967 because they have allowed football players to earn more money in one month, than the people paying to watch them can earn in a lifetime.

Agree3 Disagree0

14 Sep 2020 13:07:09
I think the idea of a "Super League" is atrocious. It would be like our domestic game with teams playing each other 4 and 5 times a season if the CL was kept going. Even that was getting really monotonous until the one-off games recently. Smaller merger leagues could freshen things up a bit. Maybe Scotland and England, Spain and Portugal etc.

Hi Ed, how are you doing? With Boli now off to Turkey. Have you heard any whispers on who we have identified/ might get for the LWB position?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Maybe Barry Douglas or Alfie Doughty? One of the reasons Hickey turned us down was that he was told that even if he joined us we would still be looking for another LB/LWB for at least this season which makes me think it could be an older experienced player and that could be Douglas.}

13 Sep 2020 17:38:19
Cheers Ed. I don't know anything about the lad Doughty but anytime I've seen Douglas he's put in a shift.

only watched some highlights of the game yesterday but for a 5 nil game we still looked ropey at the back. Barkas made some fine saves but still doesn't look to be organising the defence in front of him. Jullien all over the place yet again. Hopefully just rusty as not played 352 in a while. One positive is Ajeti. Looks like he will score plenty.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

13 Sep 2020 16:45:06
I think it will take Barakas a little time to jel another couple of games playing with the same defence should do it I think but he showed he is a good keeper just have to get a understanding with the rest of the defence.

Agree2 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 17:01:10
Still don't see the point of playing three at the back, it seems to introduce a nervousness that permeates its way through the whole side, why not go back to basics and play a settled and regular back four, concentrate on getting the defence sorted,352 is meant to be more attacking, think someone said, but I think it's madness, . When a team like Ross County can hit the woodwork more than once and bring out good saves in Barkas, it only highlights the insanity of persisting with a system that any half decent team will tear apart.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 17:14:28
That was the first time that defense has played together and I agree we had some anxious moments - especially in the first half, when the whole team were dealing with the new formation and responsibilities.
However, Barkas did very well when called upon and with the help of a post or two deserved his clean sheet.
Jullien has been having a shaky start to the season, but Duffy will help stabilize the defense after a few games. Ajer (great player) is in the wrong position and that must be obvious to all.
County actually played very well; so when you come away with a 5-0 at a very tight ground, knowing Celtic can actually play even better and improve their defensive organisation and maybe add a left sided CB ; then it's got to go down as a massive result.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 17:39:38
If we can get back playing like we did after the winter break playing the 3-5-2 Celtic will be fine because no one will get near us.
But I can see where Aindoh is coming from.
Why take the chance and leave ourselves exposed to better teams.
Lennon could play his old system 4-4-2 but it would need to be without Brown for that formation to succeed.

Aindoh the 352 worked really well last season. Considering most teams we play park the bus its an attacking formation we need.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 14:56:59
Think big Duffy is going to be invaluable this season. Think he would be a cracking option to throw up top as a good old fashioned No 9 against teams that are parking the bus.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

13 Sep 2020 15:06:35
I think Duffy on the right, Jullian in the middle and Ajer on the left is all over the place.
I was waiting on Ajer getting sent off when trying to tackle with his left foot again.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 15:23:16
Said pre match julien uses his left more than the other 2 so I'd have duff in the middle with ajer on right.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 15:29:46
Obviously he is rumoured to want away; but that could be a factor (on top of the more money, better league, weather and location ha ha) in why he is unhappy? He is clearly out of position and so far has had a very mixed partnership with Jullien and gets a lot of criticism.
When we all know his talents could be utilized much better.

The SPFL are an utter disgrace putting a few shekels before dignity and respect. SLY only have eyes for Steven Gerrard's Sevco' and unless they smell a scandal or crisis at Celtic to sensationalize, Scottish football is an inconvenience that falls somewhere between Women's Cricket, Motor Racing and Angling.
The contempt they show us is disgusting and I cancelled my subs; some time ago and I hope many more are doing the same?
You can watch the vast majority of games via a 'firestick' or similar and I would hope a good few are put on letters to Santa this year?

What will always stick in my mind with Sly,
Was when Celtic beat Sevco 5-0 to win 7 in a row,
The game was only given a 15 minute build up.
And then when it was Slippy’s first game against Celtic,
The game got a 60 minute build up.
They are only interested in anything and everything to do with the English.
They also showed their true colours with their made up version of the Morelos interview.

Yesterday was just the sort of performance and result needed to get the ball rolling again. My concern is with Lennon's comments after the game where he said "If we don't bring any more in but don't lose anybody then I'd be happy". I don't agree with that at all. I think we badly need cover at LB. Other than that I'd say we're looking pretty strong.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

13 Sep 2020 13:22:11
I think we can all see how exposed we were down both wings - especially the left, where we have no natural left footed players.
I was hoping to see the back of Boli and Rogic by now to free-up cash to address this perennial left back situation; but hey-ho.
Gregg Taylor is our currently only option, but has lost his place to JF who cannot be left out because of his value and experience; but Forrest is not a left wingback and as much as Frimpong brings to the attack, he too is left exposed a lot when teams counter us.
It's early days and some of the players have hardly played together as yet, so hopefully, we drill the team in training and stick to a system that suits our outstanding attacking options and with 15 goals scored in only four games, it's working so far, domestically, but we will face tougher opponents along the way.
My main concern is losing a star player (or two) at the closing minutes of this 'window' and leaving ourselves much worse off.

{Ed007's Note - Bolingoli has joined Istanbul Basaksehir on a one-year loan deal.}

13 Sep 2020 13:43:32
He's obviously got something about him Ed if he's getting these sorts of moves but coming here clearly just didn't work out for him or the club at all.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Basaksehir won their first title last season - and are straight into the CL Group Stages - so they must be a decent side to beat the likes of Galatasaray and Besiktas.

13 Sep 2020 13:45:55
Will we now try bring in a replacement or will forrest find himself the new left wb Ed 007?

Agree0 Disagree0

Now it’s been confirmed,
Celtic need to get a left back to replace him.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 14:07:51
There's a guy - left-footed - playing for Basaksehir of Turkey. He's a bit of a maverick but is that not a good thing? He's got history but so has Griffiths and can get bums off seats. Just a thought but he may not cost much.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 14:25:51
Lennon is entitled to say what he likes . Nobody only the most gullible will at anytime will believe exactly what boss says in a transfer window . There is absolutely no point in Lennon putting clubs with left sided players possibly available on transfer that, Celtic are desperate for that type of player
I always thought the advantage of 3 at the back &wing backs were wing backs could push up and either of two c bs could move out to fix gap behind wing backs and a defensive midfielder drop back to take up position vacated by c b covering for wing back.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 14:33:16
You want him to bring in players for the positions we need before he gets offers in for our major players. If he doesn't we'll still have a problem as selling clubs will demand top dollar since we'll have money.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 14:52:11
@Chris, the people who run football clubs aren't stupid (for the most part) , everybody and their granny can see that we need a LB and Lennon coming out and pretending we'd be happy to go without isn't going to pull the wool over anybody's eyes.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 15:02:03
Stengo offers for major players change nothing, what makes changes are when the offers for player or players are accepted by players who then force Club to accept them and players is sold .
Not all players are like K T and shouting all their careers, how great a Celt he is and then force his departure to Arsenal.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 15:17:10
Kev
Everybody and their granny could also see we needed a left footed CB since Celtic started playing 3-5-2 in January. And we are still waiting.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 15:35:58
OMC, I'm referring to the major players as Christie, Calmac, Eddie, Ajer, Forrest and Ntcham. I'm not selling the whole heart and soul of the team but Ntcham (contract up 2022) , Christie (2022) , Ajer, (2022) and Eddie (2022) . Gump is 2023 and Calmac is 2024. I wouldn't see PL sell any of these for bottom dollar and although one or two are in their late 20's there is still decent money to be made, and that is my point. If we get good money for any of these players then selling clubs will know we've got money in the bank.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 14:40:07
Just noticed that about Bolingoli Ed cheers;
Was going to ask you this as well; Do you think the excitement and 'buzz' the new arrivals bring to the squad will have any bearing on the likes of Ajer and Ntcham that may want to leave - second thoughts etc - or has that ship sailed?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Not with Ajer who is pretty determined he wants to leave in this window.}

13 Sep 2020 19:31:28
I know that BB, so if Lennon had came out and said we don't need a left footed CB it also wouldn't trick other clubs into letting them go any cheaper either.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 22:44:33
We don’t go to that simple basic about clubs re- valuing players, but at the same time there is no need to shout from the hill tops of who we want for where . According to Ed . Lennon has nothing to do with the signing of players, so it’s only right that he doesn’t stick his nose in and create problems for those who do the work on transfers .

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Even if we disagree, we should respect. As for yesterday, I thought Brown was our best midfielder with Calum strangely quiet, and James struggling for form. First half was tepid with County creating several chances, mostly foiled by Barkas, who was excellent throughout. Half time managerial rocket paid dividends with much more coherent passing and great attacking. Goals for our three forwards and two defenders was testament to the 3-5-2 setup. Duffy will be a stalwart figure for us at both ends of the pitch. Ntcham has some classy touches, but his final ball is suspect. 5-0 at Dingwall is a great outcome, and I think we have a really strong squad in our quest for 10IAR. HH!

13 Sep 2020 12:44:07
I can't believe there is debating over Brown when the main talking point should be how awful our defence looked. The sooner Ajer goes tbe better and Jullien needs replaced by Bitton. Duffy is cleary lacking match sharpness and fitness so will reserve judgement for now, having said that didn't he make that header his for his goal, we've been missing that.
Brown's legs are like the going for 55 campaign!

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 13:34:50
Defensively, Scott Brown was outstanding yesterday - as was Barkas. The rest all had anxious moments and errors that - on another day - cost us goals and even points.
Our attacking play has carried us so far (domestically) with plenty of goals right through the team and considering we have not really built up any momentum for various reasons, we are still to settle; but are improving - noticeably in the second half of past two games and I must mention Klimala making a difference as well.
There are a few players still finding their feet and arguably one or two who may be looking to leave? Once the dust settles and players use the same system week-in-week-out, we will hopefully see a big difference and a similar run of form as last season.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 14:39:37
What has Ajer and Brown, Greg T, C McG, Christie, J Forrest, and Tom Rogic done wrong .
There is not a player playing for any other team in Scotland who has ever reached the standards of any of these players . There is not a player playing for any other team in Scotland who can regularly play well as any of these Celtic players who either through injury or loss of form are struggling, but according to many our Celtic players shouldn’t be near the team. Instead of moaning and ridiculing our most successful domestic team in nearly 50 yrs, get the feel good feeling going and enjoy ten in a row.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Sep 2020 15:36:44
Chris - Ajer's development has stalled over the past year. Taylor doesn't look good enough. I like Forrest but plays hide and seek too often for me though he's never a full back right or left. Rogic is an enigma. Has stats are shocking for a number 10. Christie and McGregor would be in my team every week.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Sep 2020 23:05:00
BigBubs Some people are jumping on Ajer’back everytime he thinks he might make a mistake . Ike many before him Ajer is subjected to scrutiny and ridicule that he certainly doesn’t deserve . In our last 2 games he scored and had an assist . If that was a striker like Eddie, these same fans would be full of praise for him .
Forrest is very versatile but I haven’t seen him play either left or right full back . I have great faith and confidence in G Taylor but I think Celtic supporters sometimes think players from medium sized SPL clubs and hence they were never going to give Taylor a chance . I have been watching Celtic since the 1960’s and I have never used or seen the value of stats in evaluating a player . I remember some glorious and decisive goals by big Tom more than anything else. I am happy to agree with you re RC and C McG, unfortunately more and more Celtic fans have started to find fault and abuse these 2 wonderful Celts.

Yesterday was a great result. Having watched the highlights tho County had plenty goal scoring opportunities. Early days but if we play 3-5-2 the wingbacks need to be able to defend. I agree with a lot of what you say Enrico.
Gary Breen has some neck on him, he wasn’t even playing for lower league teams in England at the week ends and then played badly for ROI midweek .

Top half clubs in the EPL have had £30 bids within last 2 yrs turned down by Rangers2012 for Morellos .
Celtic are also turning down similar big bids for Eddy from half the EPL clubs, so I am afraid Gary doesn’t know what he is talking about.
