The real reason the Rangers fans flipped, after losing the 1980 Scottish Cup Final to Celtic was out of embarrassment because they somehow failed to qualify for Europe.
Rangers only had to draw one of their last 2 league games against Partick Thistle and St. Mirren or beat Celtic in the Cup Final but they lost all 3 games against Glasgow opposition.
Dundee Utd finished their league season about 12 days before the Celtic V Rangers Cup Final.
Utd finished their season with a goalless draw away to Morton and they must've thought they were out of a European place.
Rangers were on the same points as Dundee Utd but they had a worse goal difference.
A few days after Utd had played all their games,
Rangers lost 4-3 to Partick Thistle at Firhill and then they lost heavily 4-1 away to St. Mirren in their last league match.
Celtic lost the league to Aberdeen by one point which now meant that Rangers had to win the Cup Final or they failed to reach European football.
I think those 3 defeats in one week, to all of their Glasgow rivals, tipped the angry bears over the edge.
To make matters worse for them, the Rangers fans also lost the pitch battle and they got a few slaps to calm them down. ?.
