So if we could only sign one of our Southampton loanees permanently. Who would you pick.

Forster or Elyounoussi?

Big Fraser all day long.

11 Feb 2020 08:54:24
It's a real hard one to answer iceman but I would take Forster as he solidifies the team. I Loved him the first time he was here and his showings in the European games have been immense. whos your pick?

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Feb 2020 09:28:39
Elyounoussi Forster is a good shot stopper but for a big guy he doesn't command his area well imo although if he did we would have no chance of keeping him.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Feb 2020 09:39:11
I posted yesterday about my concerns if we had to go back to Bain as Forster has shown (especially in big games) that he is a class act.
Ellyounnoussi is a class act as well, but we still managed to play very well and score plenty of goals while he was out.
If we pushed the boat-out and got both and signed a centre-half, in the summer, I would be absolutely delighted.
However, there's always the chance The Board would sell a top player to subsidize such a project?

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Feb 2020 09:52:05
I’m going Forster. A top class keeper in my mind. No doubt Elyounoussi is a class act but I feel we could cover that position easier. Realistically I don’t think we can buy them both due to the transfer fees involved.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Feb 2020 13:43:48
Elyounoussi for me on his game he’s a class act and think it’s easier to buy a half decent keeper who while not quite Forster would be good enough if we can score more than the opposing team and Elouyassi can play a part in achieving that. Would love to sign Forster too but don’t think he’s the best I’ve seen at Celtic Park I think Boruc was better at his peak. What a back 5.Boruc, McGrain, Elliot, Van Dyke and KT are the best I’ve seen.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I'd have Tam Boyd in there before KT.}

11 Feb 2020 14:07:56
Elyounoussi all day long.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Feb 2020 14:43:50
Selection based purely on ability Ed but KT nowhere near played long enough for us to be remembered with the Tam Boyd’s or Jackie McNamara’s of the past.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Nah not for me mate. I like my defenders to defenders to defend first and Boyd was a better defender than KT was - maybe not in the future as hopefully KT goes on to prove himself and realise his full potential but for his time at Celtic I'd go for Boyd.}

11 Feb 2020 14:47:28
Boruc took advantage of the Celtic support and ended up totally out of shape. No other Celtic keeper would have escaped criticism for making as many howlers as Boruc did. Forster is the best keeper by a long way I have seen playing for Celtic because I wasn’t a big Bonner fan either. Jackie McNamara is the best right back I have witnessed playing for Celtic because when I watched Danny McGrain in the 80s he was past his best.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Feb 2020 17:11:10
Elliot was amazing best defender I have seen and that's me going back to the time of the Lisbon lions just.

Agree2 Disagree0

11 Feb 2020 19:22:31
Agree tony2bhoy - Elliot was a great asset - how much would he be worth now?
I would take Forster out of those two as Moi has more cover in his position of a certain quality at the moment.

11 Feb 2020 22:03:52
I'd like us to try to get Elyannousi in as he's relatively young and I can't see us finding a winger with that ability and hunger easily. I'd go in for Forster too--but would be happy with another year's loan tbh, and that might be a good compromise for all concerned. We used to have some of the best goalie coaching and scouting in the game. Forster is the rock, but where are our prospects here? I'd also be happy to see which of them earns it in our european campaigning. HH.

Question on progression for our fringe/ academy players.

I've seen on here the likes of Johnson getting stick for being too weak for the big games, which to be fair he can be at times, however my question is should we start loaning our younger players out earlier to see if they can develop and adapt to the physicality of the Scottish game quicker in order to progress in the first 11 at an earlier age?

Dembele is a prime example, I see why we would want to protect him, but I fear for many of our prospects that they will turn out to be like Phil foden, bags of potential but never get a real chance, and that shouldn't be the case as our prospects should be good enough to get a full season of football in the SPL at a lower league positioned team, and the vital minutes would surely help us going forward.

The development league isn't challenging enough for them and they don't get the experience required.

January was good for some youngsters going out on loan, but do you think we should be sending them out earlier? Some lads play development football and then get released without even showcasing there ability.

Many players aren't the best in training but shine in a match, and I think we have lost talent and may lose more in the future unless we get them sent out earlier.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

10 Feb 2020 19:45:55
We have a fantastic group of young potential stars and they all can't be expected to hang around indefinitely biding their time - especially at a huge club that obviously buys plenty of players.
A footballers career is short enough and unless you have outrageous talent like Forrest, KT, Frimpong or even Eddy etc; In my opinion, they should be loaned out and monitored closely as part of their development, just like we did with Cal-Mac and Ajer.
I know it doesn't work all the time and the jury is still out on players like Ralston and Henderson for example, but it does help their career one way or another and there are several that could benefit from that experience and a realistic match-day routine.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - What do you think of the idea of us entering a B team into the lower leagues similar to what Spanish clubs do, OAB?}

10 Feb 2020 20:02:05
It done wonders for both Ajer and Christie. I'm surprised we don't do it more. Bayo and Shved could be doing with it.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Feb 2020 20:06:45
Well that is better than playing in a development league, however why not have a feeder team in the lower tier?

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Feb 2020 20:40:57
I would love that Ed; as you know I'm an 'old timer' and that idea was banded about some time ago, where 'Celtic Colts' (and others) would enter the lower divisions but would not be eligible for cup tournaments, or promotion to the top league. I don't know why it was shot down in flames as it would help develop players, stop us losing potential talent and even boost attendances of smaller clubs = cash?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It's a no brainer for me too mate. The only down point for me is that if we won the Championship - or any lower league for that matter - and were not allowed to be promoted it would take the gloss off the promoted team and devalue the competition in a way.}

10 Feb 2020 20:41:33
Limits to the number of loanees would be an issue. You'd think having a second set of premiership teams would be good for Scottish football but didn't clubs vote heavily against it recently?

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Feb 2020 22:24:39
A Celtic Colt team would be ideal for developing the young players allow the team to go no higher than 1st division but wasn't this proposed and voted down?

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Feb 2020 22:13:01
It's horses for courses. Some players are ready for first team action. Some still need coaching. And I'd like to think we have better coaching/ facilities than the teams they would be going on loan to anyway. Christie and Ajer had already played first team football. A Jong team is the perfect solution for me - getting coached off our staff and mixing with the first team whilst playing competetive football against men.

Ed an earlier post mentioned the infamous hotel project. I may and probably will get shot down for this but other than overnight match day extravaganza's I don't see it getting used much.

I could be wrong and I've no doubt they have plans for it's use other than match day's but personally I just don't see it working and what do they do with it if it doesn't meet expectations.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - It's not just a hotel project but the hotel will be across the road from the Emirates Arena and will be ideally positioned for event organisers, participants and supporters for a start and it will also help the Club to attract more events like when we had the Commonwealth games and rugby at Celtic Park. There's a lot more goes on in Glasgow than football.
Like Fergus McCann insisting on a bigger capacity than Ibrox - and being told it was a mistake and we'd never fill it or sell enough season tickets - investing in projects like the hotel/musuem complex will ensure revenue streams for years to come.}

Cheer's. I just wasn't thinking seriously about it
all along and to be honest never had as it just has, for me, a strange and odd feeling. Although did stay at the Beatles hotel in liverpool and that was okay.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Do you think our board would invest in something if there was a chance it was going to fail? The Unseen Fenian Hand and GCC's long term plans to regenerate the East End will make sure it's a a success.}

With Elyounoussi coming back to fitness, with Forrest and Christie now available do we stick to the 352 or revert back to 4231/ 433?
The obvious wingbacks for 352 are not Forrest and Taylor but Frimpong (when fit) and Bolingoli. My personal opinion is that I'd prefer to see Christie and Elyounoussi behind Edouard but Griffiths form has made it such a difficult call for Lenny. Wednesday's team selection will be interesting, my gut tells me Lenny will go 352. I've seen a few say Elyounoussi can play left wing back, not for me.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

10 Feb 2020 16:58:14
I think he'll drop the 352 for home games. It's difficult to see us dropping a fit Elyounoussi and he doesn't fit in that system.

Stick with the 3-5-2 all the way. System is really working and the partnership between Eddy and Griff will continue to grow.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Feb 2020 07:18:59
I posted about this recently. It's a real conundrum for me. I can't possibly see how a fit Elyounhowthehelldoyouspellhisname can be left out of our strongest 11. However I really would like to continue with the 3-5-2 formation. He does have a fantastic work rate to go with his ability so I am hoping he can play the wingback role. Another thing is I really can't see the manager going 3 at the back in Europe or against The Rangers so we might be reverting to a back 4 more often anyway.

Celtic have already surpassed the 121 total goals from last season. After the Clyde game on 9th February we have now scored 122 goals and Celtic still have potentially 25 games still to play if we reach the Scottish and Europa league finals.

ED007 looking for some more of your inside knowledge please.
With the interim accounts very healthy with a nice £29m in the bank (ok mostly down to Tierney money) but it shows club, even without CL cash can turn a profit.
My question is this, how far along are the Hotel plans? because I know the club are also building a disabled car park.
I would imagine some of the profits will be earmarked for hotel but surely Celtic will be looking at outside finance, either in shape of bank loans or sponsorship to fund hotel. If a loan, I would imagine Celtic would have to put down a hefty deposit, hence not using the money in bank just yet. is this your take on things also.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - As far as I know there's no immediate plans to move the regeneration project forward, Tim, and remember it isn't just a hotel, there's also a museum, new ticket office and shop in there. Contrary to reports it was never meant to be finished this month. When GCC granted planning permission in September 2017 they stated that said work must begin within three years, does that mean we have until September of this year and I don't know how that will affect the planning permission if it isn't. In August 2019 we also applied for a 3-year extension (taking us to 2022) for the current ticket office site and in the application the Club stated:

"The application is required for a further three years to allow the applicant to properly assess future development on the site and allocate resources to a permanent structure."

Finance wise it's Chris Trainer's company Forrest Group that own the Radisson Red Hotel who are supposedly our partners in the project - Trainer/Forrest Group are the third largest shareholders in Celtic behind Dermot Desmond.}

Ed a couple of guys I know who follow the youth team say there's a cracking young striker by the name Kieron McGrath. Do you know anything about this kid?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Is that the lad that's on loan to East Kilbride? I don't know much about him except that he was really highly thought of and sought after with a few clubs in England after him when we signed him but he then picked up a bad injury that set him back and kept him out for a long time. His contract is up at the end of the season so I guess we'll see then if he has got back to the levels required.}

Since we came back from the winter break, we have played really well . The break has done us the world of good, since the season started we have had a couple of poor performances ( cluj and sevco) but apart from that it’s been very good. Hats off to lennie, his back room team and the players. The squad all seem happy, I read a stat yesterday that we have already scored as many goals as we did last season, which shows the attacking intent from the whole set up.

The interesting thing for me now is what set up will lennie go for in the Europa? Will he still be brave and go with two up top, personally I would . If we are to go out, let’s go out fighting and looking to score a few, the option is always there to change it now in game time, and bring on Ryan Christie after an hour when teams are tiring a little . His energy could bring damage to many games and granted he deserves to start but then I don’t think ntcham deserves to be dropped .

Personally I feel when ntcham is on form he brings us something different to our midfield . Also his link up play with eddy is good. I think we are lucky to have both him and eddy playing for us, in a couple of seasons when they progress even higher with their careers we will appreciate the good scouting we had to get them both here. ( and moose) .

I can’t see a time where we have two or three top French under 21 year olds playing for us.

10 Feb 2020 09:37:23
I'll admit I was quite concerned with the way we were playing in the 4-2-3-1 formation at the turn of the year but the tweaked system is looking fantastic and I'd like to see us stick with it as long as the personnel are fit and firing. Ntcham on his game is absolutely unreal. He almost never loses possession, even in tight areas. Cool as a cucumber.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Feb 2020 11:08:36
I like Ntcham's physicality in the midfield 3 though Christie's energy and finishing offer something different. Would like to see us utilise the 352 but think we should mix it up sometimes to keep it fresh. Both Dembele and Edouard have been superb but I worry what happens with Edouard inevitably leaves? Surely Klimala isn't his replacement.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Feb 2020 11:09:59
It has been a fantastic season - so far - and even when we were a bit flat and tiring in December, we still kept winning - until the final game before the break.
Since Griffiths has come back, we are linking up play extremely well and seeing the best of Eddy, Cal-Mac and Forrest as well and
with the injuries starting to clear-up - plus new additions in the 'window' - the manager now has much more options to keep opponents guessing and also switch things up to suit game-by-game.
In Scott Brown, we have a player/ captain, that never ceases to amaze me with his appetite, commitment and influence; which suggests he looks more than capable of extending his Celtic career for another couple of seasons at least (if he stays injury free) . The only small concern I have is longer term and that concerns Frazer Forster; there's no doubt he has made a huge contribution to where we are at present and I really hope we can keep him?
