Proven SPL scorer going for £150k?

Surely we should be looking at Billy McKay at that price.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

He's meant to be a blue nose. He went to school with my brother in Corby

I don't understand why people think we should buy players like this. I very much doubt he's better than what we've already got. Also, we want the league to be stronger and that's not going to happen if we keep signing players from other teams in the league. If Rangers get promoted surely we want the other teams to be as strong as possible?

Agree0 Disagree2

Sorry Mr tounge I strongly believe the opposite of this, I believe we should be signing the very best up players the spl has to offer and only look outside the spl when we can't fill the position from within, in recent years we could have had , McCarthy, gauld , Russell, mccarthur, Robertson and even Rooney from ict who has scored more goals for Aberdeen this season than all our super striker's and foreign duds combined . With the money staying in Scotland the teams would reinvest it bringing more youngsters through and the circle continues, Don't tell me the stepovic, tonevs or wakassos are better than the players I have mentioned

Agree1 Disagree0

Sorry went a little of topic their I don't think McKay falls into this category, he is a decent spl goal scorer but not for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not that I would like us to sign McKay, but the team at this moment lacks a consistent finisher and we have tried many permutations without regular success.
I am talking about a 25/30 goals a season man like Hooper - and I know Commons was on fire last season, but not this one, for one reason or another - and he is not a striker.
Scepovic, Stokes, Griffiths and Guidetti (who isn't our player) have all been too inconsistent and Balde Watt and Pukki were shipped out.
Successful Celtic sides have always been synonymous with a recognised finisher, considering the numerous chances we create.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree and disagree hen riks tongue, a big no too McKay but we need more Scottish talent in our squad we have needed a 2nd LB for years never signed Robertson, Armstrong is a must we need to have more scots!

Agree0 Disagree0

The Scots should be the backbone of the team. The foreigners mainly use us as a stepping stone to the EPL. We tend to keep a hold of Scottish players longer and Scandinavians. Think of the success we would've had had we signed these players we let leave for England

Agree1 Disagree0

Guys

about time we started smelling the coffee and realising our level. There are guys in Scotland that can do a job for us but we are too busy looking down our noses at them because they play for Inverness, haven't played in Europe, they support the wrong team.

We will just continue buying the guy with the foreign sounding name at 10 times the price who will score 10 times less goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Fans of modern football would rather see their club buy average players from abroad than see our own youth being developed or buying young players from other Scottish teams and developing them. The way some CFC fans are we'd be as well closing down our academy and youth set-up.}

29 Jan 2015 16:15:34
Just to be clear, I'm not against signing Scottish players. It is important to have Scots in the team who know what playing for Celtic is all about, but would signing someone like McKay really improve our team? I don't see the point in signing someone just because they are Scottish. There are better strikers out there

Agree0 Disagree0

I have always advocated buying or bringing in guys from other Scottish teams. Juventus, Real Madrid and to the greatest extent Bayern Munich buy regularly from other teams in their own country to great effect as they have seen the players playing in the league or from playing against them. I'm not saying we have a Nedved, Isco or Gotze playing in our league before anyone hammers me for saying but I would have McKay over Balde, Pawlett over Tonev, Ryan Jack over Bitton, Souter over Ambrose any day of the week or as you say Ed one of our own youths instead of a gamble on someone who might come good or be a waste of money.

Agree0 Disagree0

According to a recent survey in the London times 95% of players who are at clubs or club acadamies at 15 years are gone by 18 years of age . 98% of players at 18 are not playing football at 21. Another survey shows of those who have been at Professional clubs at 15 and are let go at 18 yrs old 55% have serious mental health problems, many with alcohol or/and drug addiction .

Ed. It seems to me that overall there are far too many youngster around 15 signed up by acadamies and clubs . Are they accepting too poor a standard or is there no way of foretelling how many are going to drop out and with serious personnal problems

Agree0 Disagree0

I think that what some people forget is that although the likes of Mackay is scoring reasonably well in the SPL, he is not coming up against a packed defence every week. I don't think that there are many who are already playing in Scotland that would excel under those circumstances.

Agree0 Disagree0

Chris

Interesting stats. I think it is a bit of 2 things 1) too many kids that the coaches can't see the wood for the trees (Given, Robertson). 2) these guys thinking that they have made it and not committing 100% to a career as a professional footballer. We all know or played in the same team as a guy picked up by a professional team, could have been a world beater but didn't commit 100% and blew it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Niall I agree with you but the industry as a whole are taking in too many at a young age . With so many been cast aside at 15/18 and going off the rails . We could find instead of a young player and his family delighted at getting the opportunity to join at 15, youngster will be encouraged by family and career teachers etc . and true highly skilled level headed young players could be lost to the game altogether .m

Agree0 Disagree0

Brave tart. Surely whether Mackay is a blue nose or not isn't part of the criteria whether Celtic should sign him or not .
The fact that Celtic has always been a club open for all is one of the main difference between us and the club that died . Should we start a sectarian signing policy after 127 years .

Does anyone know if there is an official website where football fans can look up transfer listed players/players out of contract in summer?

Would be interesting to see what team could be built

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Try www.transfermarkt.co.uk for a list of players going out of contract.}

You shouldn't torture yourself dn ha ha

Agree1 Disagree0

Cheers ed

Agree0 Disagree0

I know gary mate. Was on there just now and there are some cracking players available, we have no chance signing.

Agree0 Disagree0

That's interesting that site Ed did you see that Michael Ciani was linked to us again in it?

Still only 30 and available on a Bosman one of the biggest CH a have seen in the game in a long time reminds me a lot of Bobo and there not many that fit into that fold lol any thoughts?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - A lot of the information is out of date and I have no idea where they get their estimated transfer fees from, click on the link about Ciani and it will probably be from the summer of 2012, but it's quite accurate about contract lengths etc.}

LOL Ed your right about the transfer fees Kris Commons £3.08 million
:-0

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah your right Ed rumour is an ancient one but a great site still the same

real concern is majority of strikers available even secondary strikers are all 30 or 30+ & we are crap at finding them

Seems also a bit strange wee Maloney who we were linked with only signed for Chicago til June & out of contract again?!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I didn't know that, seems a bit strange.}

Players coming out of contract in June won't necessarily be cheap. Those of ability will demand very high signing on fees and corresponding large wages .

Guys/Ed just a small point about sunday. I can't remember playing a semi on the Saturday rather than a sunday. can anyone else? Obv the pitch at hampden has not been good last few years and always seems to be worse the day after a game.Which means we suffer a poorer pitch.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

The last Saturday semi final I can remember was when we beat Aberdeen, I think it was 4-1, and I think it may have been the day that Commons made his debut.
If I am wrong I apologise.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not sure what the Rugby calendar is for this weekend but do you think Murrayfield would have been a good option for this game Rayman? Or possibly have the Dundee Utd v Aberdeen game there. I read somewhere online yesterday that they would be keen to host Scotland matches in the future when the lease for Hampden expires. Hampden is pants, Didn't make the Champions League games at Murrayfield this season but been to a few gigs there and enjoyed it.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jan 2015 21:08:56
Commons first game in the hoops if am not mistaken Gerry? Didn't wee beat them 9 0 the week before

Agree0 Disagree0

Wee craigy white, I know that we beat them 9-0 earlier that season.
We dominated them that season, we won all of our matches against them and we also beat them in the scottish cup semi final.

Afternoon Ed & all, Heh Ed with how quiet the transfers in is and the window nearing shut :-(

Do you think that Pedro has pulled the best masterstroke of all? he might have fixed that semi-final draw knowing full well that we would concentrate on that rather than the pending closure of the transfer window

A know it's a trifle cynic even naughty but all these years off being called "paranoid" makes you think outside the box mate lol?

ATVB JB7

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't think that Lawwell is bothered about the team improving, as long as the team wins the league.
The problem with this is I think the lack of investment will eventually cost us big time.
Whether it's teams like Aberdeen or Dundee United catching us up, or dare I say it Rangers getting into the premier league and spending some money, we could be threatened in the next couple of years.
I think the idea should be for the team to improve year on year, but we seem to weaken every year.
It is very complacent to assume that other teams will never catch us up.

Agree1 Disagree0

The complacency of him and the board has seen us sacrifice quality and class in the knowledge that we are streets ahead of the rest of Scotland in terms of revenue and squad standard/size.
The European reputation associated with Celtic has been allowed to deteriorate to mediocrity.
The trophy count since the death of Rangers has been disappointing due to a mixture of untried and cheaper option managers and budget signings.
As soon as we have a hint of quality, talented players they rarely stay.
Transfer windows used to be exciting, but the last few are an indication of the way the club has been led.

Couldn't agree more jungle Jim! Well put bud 👍

Agree0 Disagree0

I have searched the annual accounts and I don't see any transfer war chest .
If others can show me where and the size of the war chest, I will be very happy to see this war chest and then we can complain about Mr Lawwell non spending

RD just on tv says can't see any one come in before Monday and are working on Different things

28 Jan 2015 16:34:15
Shocker! I think I remember him sayin we would defo be stronger by the end of the window! I don't believe a word that comes out of his or lawells mouth! As usual leave the fans hanging on til the last couple of days then nuthins happens! We tried but couldn't get anyone,or January is a hard month to buy! Heard it all before I'm afraid! And we'll here it all again In the summer!

Agree1 Disagree0

I've stopped believing what they say too Dangy. I'm actually concerned though that our managers are even getting fed some of Lawwell's famous Bullsh!t Pie.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi tony said at the start of the window we would get the usual "mushroom diet" mate

kept in the dark & fed choite!

Agree1 Disagree0

I'm more optimistic than I was yesterday about a deal or 2 being done by the deadline but like every January prepared for no one. If that is the case surely we have the players to retain the Title. We are certainly looking more settled now than previous months when the starting 11 was anyone's guess.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah I know Jamie I really DID think we would have had a couple of players in by now just shows how gullible I am I thought at least one CB for sure on a contract not loan again shows how gullible I am

Agree0 Disagree0

How long does board think they will get away with not investing and talking utter Bull?

Its not breaking bank getting GMS in for £250k, a player who will make a difference or spending money received for Forster (minus scepovic fee) on areas that need strengthened.

Agree1 Disagree0

They must have saved circa £350k in Kayal's wages easy that would have been factored into budgets etc so no reason to go get GMS IMO

Agree0 Disagree0

If I didn't believed a word that comes out of our manager and CEO mouth I would stop supporting the team .
I am not saying that I necessarily believe everything they say, but not believe a word! 🐥🐥

Have to admit I wasnt worried at first but now I am that no new players will be brought in this window.

I always thought players would be signed this window after Deila had been given time to assess squad, but its worrying how there is no progress.

Its clearly evident we need some new players in now, especially with Inter game fast approaching.

I don't think anyone expects club to break the bank signing players this window, but we need players that will do a turn.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

I agree DN30 general consensus was @ least 3 in we are going to need 1 if not 2 CH's as VVD will be off in the summer & Denayer maybe too

If we start next season trying to bed in TWO CH's we can forget all about next year's CL Campaign alreadies

A thought the plan was to get people in now for prep for that reason?

Agree1 Disagree0

Spot on Jamiebhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

Jamie youve hit the nail on the head. We need at least 3 players in and the sensible thing to would get a CH in just now to settle in.

Ive just got a gut feeling VVD will be away this window which is another blow. He has been too vocal putting himself in shop window lately and I think that's reason £3m was knocked back for Ambrose.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi DN30 a think VVD has been told he will get his wish in the summer MATE there a left sided CH they are interested from Ajax who they can get in on a Bosman but not until the summer

Apparently, it would take 800k to get him in now if they ain't giving 250k for GMS they ain't parting with 800k mate atvb jb7

Agree0 Disagree0

Its worrying times Jamie. Ouch well at least Liewwell will get his bonus this year

Agree0 Disagree0

We apparently have 3 million set aside for Guidetti deal, that isn't going to happen so why not go out and spend that and the Kayal money on the CH and Armstrong?

Agree2 Disagree0

NiallH totally agree mate. Even if Guidetti deal was to go through, makes sense getting him on pre-contract after loan expires saving £3m. Not too bothered if he signs tbh.

Makes sense to use Kayal money to sign GMS

Agree0 Disagree0

Did the Young Dutch defender from AZ not sign a pre contract with an Italian club?

Agree0 Disagree0

Kev T just googled that player your right. Signed pre contract for Lazio.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi Kev T, No it's the Ajax CH, 29, he is the 29, Captain of Finland, Niklas Mosiander (spelling?)

Agree0 Disagree0

Ah no worries jamiebhoy forgot all about him, is he a benchwarmer now for Ajax?

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi Kev, No a don't think so bud but they might be playing hardball or gave up on him as he wants out he can play LB too so bit of cover there too, built a bit like VVD,

A always think the left footers look a bit more cultured but maybe that is just me

There another CH Ed correctly corrected me in his surname its Marsden or Madsen RD had him at his old club, both deals are up in the summer and avail on Bosman's fit the bill of RD wanting Scand types

Agree0 Disagree0

I see man u and fletcher are having a wee bit of a dispute over his free transfer, maybe a 6 month loan at Celtic would be beneficial for all parties.

Believable2 Unbelievable4

Deila's biggest task is getting all his fit players playing a high pressure game .
It would be harder still to get a sick midfield player to press at the level Deila wants .

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jan 2015 06:06:59
'If' we could spend £3m before deadline day which player/s would you want and why?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

28 Jan 2015 08:23:49
Stan why do u put urself threw this mate! I know it's only a question, but what's the point! There's no chance we're spending a penny before bud! And 3 million! your havin a laugh aren't u? Let it go bud,and face up to the fact there will be no money brought out the biscuit tin by Lawell this month!

Agree1 Disagree0

Darren fletcher and Gms. If he can stay fit Darren has more energy and experience than bitton which could be crucial against inter, it would also free johansson who is less effective when playing further back. As for Gms we've signed numerous wide players who regularly can't beat a man so hopefully he might?

Agree0 Disagree1

28 Jan 2015 10:16:33
Armstrong and Fletcher. Kim has also been released from Cardiff.

Agree0 Disagree1

Well a wouldn't spend it oot side the front door that's for sure ( that is what it cost us doing it up for the CG!)

Agree0 Disagree0

Dangy I have a funny feeling we will spend £3m exactly, Rumours or what time will tell. haha.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jim1972 I too would like GMS in asap, There hasn't been anyone on the left who has made the position their own this season, In fairness Stokes has played well there recently but for me GMS would add something different, I think he will become even better at CP so the sooner we get him in the better. Heard late last night something might happen regarding 2 players so let's see.

Agree0 Disagree0

Darren fletcher, GMS, Armstrong, thing is it would cost £3M as you say but it would get 10k extra in bums on seats so would pay for itself.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree Rayman, A wee boost is needed at this time of year and this weekend is the perfect time to do it and like you say add some bums to seats. I'd love to see Fletcher sign. I'd love to see both Fletchers sign but i'm greedy.
