Are Celtic fans showing a lack of understanding of modern football by not backing Deila's regime?

Is this question supposed to be funny or some kind of put down?

We comment on concerns we have about recent results and the style of play and its a lack of understanding of the modern game - I do despair.

Again, diet is not the only issue needed in modern or non modern football and this has been the point that has been getting ignored all week in this debate.

Do we really believe that by soley changing the diet regime at Celtic they are going to be competing with Real Madrid. In the 5/6 years Ronny was at Stromsgodset - who was he competing with? I'm not taking away his achievment of getting his team to be league Champions but they were still not competing at the higher level where Celtic want to consistently be and for that we need investment, amongst other things. We were in the last 16 of the Champions League 2 seasons ago for goodness sake and I never heard anyone say the reason we were not last season was down to diet - the sale of players definitely.

I understand modern football just fine cheers and its a lot more to do with money.

Anyway just because we hear of 'modern' methods does not make them successful or right so if I want to question them, I will!

Agree1 Disagree3

Mrs E, as far as I understand it its about fitness and ability. The players in the managers opinion, could be fitter. Nothing wrong with that. What you put into your body will affect your ability to train and ultimately perform.

The Zagreb game showed that our problems lie in our technical ability as well as fitness. It was good that we ground out a win (thats three in a row now - with two clean sheets), but our inability to keep hold of the ball against decent european teams who use a pressing game has been evident for years. To change this at Celtic will take years.

I'll tell you what else annoys me no end about the 'modern game', the lifestyles of fooballers!

When you look back at the Lisbon Lions compared to today, very irritating.

MrsE once again I totally agree with your post regarding modern football. I am sure every up and coming coach has looked at the various concepts but if it was as easy as just changing to the new style and everything would be fine then everyone would do it. You need certain players to play the RD way. Firstly you need to be able to super fit and all of our players need to get as fit as possible. No one is saying otherwise. Secondly we need to be able to keep the ball. That means being able to pass the ball to an opponent and being able to control the ball that us passed to you. I don't know if we have 10 outfield players who can do that in the heat of a game? If not then the players better be super super fit because they are going to be chasing the ball an awful lot. So as MrsE says, no argument about modern football but can RD successfully imminent this at Celtic? You do need good players to make this work and I will get my tin hat on for the assault that may be coming my way, but I thought that over the entire 90 minutes we were no better than average on Thursday evening.

I'm not sure if there's something wrong but a couple of my posts have went amissing this week?

{Ed007's Note - Everything seems OK at this end.}

I'll give it another go

Bankie this has been my point all week and now we are been asked about our understanding of the modern game?

These are 2 quote from Jock Stein

'There is no excuse for a professional footballer not to be 100% fit'

'We send Murdoch down to the health farm at Tring to lose some weight and the main result is that we are polluted with bad tips from the wee jockeys he meets there.'

This being fit is not modern or new.

Since I've been on God's earth I've seen advancements with medicine and technology etc, sport is taking full advantange of this which I have absolutely no problem with at all. They've learned more about the human body and diet, jeezo we all hear about the latest Hollywood diet that's a miracle and comes from a 'modern doctor' only to hear within a year of the risks associated with the new latest diet. Maybe this is a Woman thing but its where my cyncial attitude towards the mention of modern diet comes from.

I have no problem at all with Ronny wanting a fit sqaud infact I welcome it and was embarrassed by Neil Lennon's comments on diet the other day, but there are other areas he also address and this has nothing to do with a misunderstanding of the modern game. Usain Bolt - why is he not playing centre forward if diet and fitness are all that's required in football.

If Ronny was getting results would we be having this conversation - No

Just looking at the stats from the 2011 Champions League Final - Manchester United had 37% possession and we all know they hardly got out of their own half, was this down to diet?

I just hope we all see Ronny's vision for the team and Club coming together soon.

{Ed007's Note - That was probably better off staying lost in cyberspace.}

Mrs E - The Lisbon Lions were a great team, however in this era they would not stand a chance in a Top Tier game of football.

Why? Its simple ability will only get you so far. Ability and Fitness will get you so much further.

I could imagine if the Lisbon Lions played the current Euro Champs Real Madrid, that the Lions would get absolutely mauled. And the difference between now and then is simple - Fitness Levels & Diet.

Think RD would be better being a tyrant on the training ground and make sure the players concentrate on passing and close control and all the other things that make a good player better and being an adviser on the diet side, telling the players the good and bad effects of certain foods, rather than being the other way round.
How long do Celtic players train every day?, was interesting listening to robbie neilsen talking about the time the team trains evrey day, and comparing it with that young rangers guy last year who got into trouble with the bears cause he tweeted that was him finished for the day at 12 o'clock and he was away playing pool or something.

Kev appreciate what your saying but it wasn't really my point, it was more to do with the moeny involved in modern football and the difference between a footballers considerably more humble lifestyle in 1967 compared to today.

Anyway, how do you know Jock Stein would not have been your modern day Manager and whipped their ass into shape? I did provide a few of his quotes where it shows fitness was important to him.

You never know what it would be like, back in the 60's it wasn't really known what was good for you and the effects on the body.

In relation to the money, its shambolic that the stars of the past are living a bog standard life and today's footy players are living like kings

Jock stein was a very modern manager of his day, implementing diet & different training methods

Mr Stein was deemed to be a very modern manager, he was one of the first of his day to send his players out with a bag of balls, and trained the players through using ball work . Naturally he didn't have the latest equipment which the players wear during training and the technicians can see if the players have pushed themselves up towards their limit . Teams need a different type of fitness to complete at the top nowadays . Consistent hard running and making the right decision is more of a feature now, than in 1967 when individual expertise and flashes of excellence done at speed were more of a feature .
