Jock Stein, s tactic boards
Jock Stein revolutionized football with a fluid, attacking philosophy that was years ahead of its time, rather than relying on tactical boards in the modern, detailed sense. He used tactical explanations during training and team talks to illustrate his system, which was based on a 4-2-4 formation that prioritized movement and creativity.
Stein's Tactical Philosophy
Stein's approach was a stark contrast to the rigid, defensive systems common in the 1960s. His key innovations included:
Attacking Full-backs: Full-backs like Tommy Gemmell and Jim Craig were encouraged to make overlapping runs and provide width, a revolutionary concept at the time and a staple of modern football.
Fluid Movement: Players were given the license and knowledge to interpret their roles and make decisions on the pitch, rather than following strict, predefined instructions.
Possession with Purpose: He emphasized playing "pure, beautiful, inventive football" and training with the ball, which was innovative in an era where running without the ball was the norm.
Detailed Analysis: Stein broke down opponents' games, illustrated formations, and highlighted mistakes in team meetings and on the training ground. He was known for being in-depth and educational with his players.
The "Tactical Board" in Context
While the concept of a specific "Jock Stein's tactic board" with unique design is not noted in historical accounts, it is clear he used methods to visually explain tactics to his players. The content of his tactical discussions and training, rather than a specific physical board, is what made his methods revolutionary. His ideas focused on utilizing space, exploiting weaknesses, and constant movement, which he would have explained using a standard football coaching board as an aid.

Not for a second comparing WN to JS, but let's judge him on his own merits and not on what he inherited. He may be everyone's preferred choice but the won't need help to try and undermine him.

He inherited a poor squad of players, he needs to get to January still in touch and with a cup in the bag that's his remit, and that weasly board better back the guy.
