Fergus McCann was at Celtic for 5.5 years before selling his shares to DD in October 1999.

Celtic played 26 European games during that time.
Won 14
Drawn 5
Lost 7

That record looks decent but a few of those wins were in 1st and 2nd round Qualifiers.

Our first European match since Fergus took over was away to Batumi in 1995.
That was our first away victory in Europe for 9 years since we went to Dublin and beat Shamrock Rovers in 1986.

I was thinking about the Batumi game last week. It’s a yardstick of where we are and we’re as a club for me. In 94 there was promise ahead but we were still in a bad place, we finished 4th that season.

But we still won that tie comfortably, a team very much comparable to Kairat. Burns swatted them aside with ease, without any real signings in, Rodgers should have done the same. Recruitment has been a farce yes but doesn’t hide the fact Rodgers has failed as a manager.

Who football was better Burns or Ange?

Angeball is the best football I can remember watching Celtic.
I enjoyed watching the football under Tommy Burns but he only won One Scottish Cup and that’s why he was sacked.

I wouldn’t say Brendan has failed since coming back.
He’s won 4 domestic trophies out of 6 and he also took Celtic to the knockout stages of the CL for the first time in over a decade.

Tommy had the team playing with style but never turned enough good performances into wins and he was up against EBT Utd. Ange came in after another of our self inflicted disasters like a tornado and the high tempo, high press (previously advocated with less success by RD) caught the attention of the whole country and won trophies.

Tommy was a cb and keeper away from dominating oldco.

Not sure it's a fair comparison tbh, comparing different era's.

Given the H*uns were at the height of their cheating, upto their knees in EBT's.

Di Canio, Van Hooijdonk and Cadette played some great stuff.

AP, for all the attacking flair, never had a plan b and SEVCO never had the players of the dead club.

Mally, he was also a Cadete goal away from winning the league.

Rangers used their first DOS Ebt in September 1999 before Tommy was our Manager.
But they were still overspending other peoples money they knew they didn’t have under the Sir Murray regime.

He lost our champions league qualifier against dynamo Zagreb. I think viduka was there and we signed him not long after.

Viduka some player.

Tommy was before that buzz.

Tommy Burns was manager of Celtic from July 1994 - May 1997; .
Rangers cheated by use of EBT’s from 2001 - 2010
I have little doubt that although Tommy Burns did not manage during Rangers EBT cheating, doubtlessly he managed Celtic when some form of cheating in Rangers favour was taking place . But then again no manager of Celtic over the last 30-35 years has managed Celtic when Rangers were not benefiting from cheating .
There are very many Celtic supporters who really admired Tommy as a footballer and a manager and they have good reason to do so . As a footballer Tommy gave it all and it was easy to see that he was a true Celtic man . As a manager he delivered a wonderful style of attacking football at a time when Rangers were spending all their own money and money from all over Scotland and UK . Tommy Burns was probably the most unlucky manager in Scotland over the last 50 yrs. Tommy was always going to be remembered fondly by the Celtic faithful. He had returned to Celtic as Head coach youth department when he took an unique form of skin cancer and died in 2028 RI P.

Sorry Mally,
I meant AFTER Tommy was our Manager.
So Rangers weren’t using EBT’s when Tommy was in charge.

You’re right 19Celtic50 about the big tax Ebt case started in 2001.
But the Wee Tax Ebt case started in September 1999 with Craig Moore.

Fair do's 19Celtic50, my bad te the EBT dates ?

I remember watching the Zagreb game and thinking I hope we sign that Viduka lad!
