Maeda off to Ipswich and gets his wish to play in the Premier League.
I wish him well, he was vital to us winning the league last season. His run of form at the tail end and his goals scored were probably the most important component to us retaining our title. 8 mill up front and 2 in add ons. Rather underwhelming fee for someone who is one of our best players but that said with 1 year left can we really complain. I have a funny suspicion this is the start of an exodus.

a lot of players need to leave us some have ran there race with us and probs lost the desire to be here. we need to really freshen the team up with new faces and move a good few on.

Engels next but no word of Reo yet. I hope he goes as he has turned from a potential star to a player sulking about being here.
Very disappointed in his last 18 months. He will probably end up in the championship.

If we had sold him last season when a deal had been agreed according to Maeda, who claimed his move to a premier league club was blocked despite having terms agreed. Then we would have made double that.

Ipswich under McKenna was one of the hardest working teams in the prem before they went down. Not surprised a player like Maeda was identified by Ipswich as he was the perfect fit for their style. Maeda gone from one O'Neill to another O'Neil.

He won us league troops so Joe who cares if we’d have got more, there’s no negative story here, guys been great for us, turned up when we needed him last season, (gave me 2 of greatest moments I’ve ever had in cp) and 10 mil for him with yr left is great business, I’m sure offer last year wasn’t near the 20 mill quoted (could be wrong ) , Joe unsure why your trying to turn the narrative negative, again …… the clubs giving you plenty to be correcty negative about, Daizen moving and the fee just isn’t negative whatever way you try spin it, you’ll say I was just replying we could have go more which is a fact, not buying it.

Im not trying to turn the narrative negative I am merely pointing out the flaws of our recruitment strategy.
Maeda was told he could move last season and a deal with a premiership club had been agreed, according to him. There was also interest from Wolfsburg and the fee being quoted was around 20 million.
However, he was not sold as we could not find a replacement. Therefore, it was a missed opportunity to capitalise on an asset who had reached peak value, which looks like a 10 million hit (a lot of money for a club in Scotland) . As a result we got stuck with a player who under performed for most of the season and you could make an argument that this failed transfer and failure in recruitment was the major cause for our woes on and off the pitch.
I should add, that as of time of writing, it looks like those mistakes are about to be repeated.
{Ed007's Note - Wolfsburg were willing to pay 16.5m Euros for Maeda, that was the only official bid for Maeda last summer, even though the Pub League was his preferred destination none of the interested clubs actually bid.}

I have seen reports saying Brentford and some saying Wolfsburg. I listened back to Maeda interview and he does not confirm the team. What is your source saying it was definitely Wolfsburg for that fee?

I told you my source already. I said I read reports and had assumed that it was self-evident they would have been in the media.

The first one I can find is on about the 8th page of Google HERE where Anthony Joseph is quoted as saying:
"My understanding is that a Bundesliga club registered their interest last week and he was keen. The German club made a big bid last weekend but Celtic were in no position to entertain it due to a shortage of forwards."

He was linked to Brentford for 21 million. No idea what the original source was as it was last season. Dig around and I am sure you will find it yourself.
Regardless of what the actual club was, it is true that we knocked the transfer back and it was for more money than it is this season.

Maeda won us the league almost single handed - thank god we didn't sell him to gain another £5m at most - he was the reason nearly every Celtic fan had a great ending to the season not to mention Champions League.
