One of the biggest problems Celtic have is youth players not being given the opportunity to break into the first team. All our players out on loan this year are highly unlikely to make the first team next season, regardless of how they get on.

Current Celtic players on loan X11:

GK Doohan (3rd loan/ Ross County)
CB Hendry (2nd loan/ Oostende)
CB O'Connor (2nd loan/ Tranmere Rovers)
LB Gutman (2nd loan/ Cincinnati)
RB Perez (2nd loan/ North Carolina)
DM McInroy (loaned/ Dunfermline)
CM Robertson (loaned/ Gillingham)
RM Shved (2nd loan/ Mechelen)
LM Bolingoli (loaned/ Basaksehir)
FW Bayo (loaned/ Toulouse)
FW Afolabi (2nd loan/ Dundee)

Subs:
GK Mullen (loaned/ Cove Rangers)
LW Paterson (loaned/ Queen's Park)
FW McGrath (loaned/ Grottu)

Aside from the deadwood like Hendry and Bolingoli, who don't deserve another chance, Robertson has the most potential but it is doubtful he'll make the first team with the current manager's track record. Henderson, O'Connell, and Welsh are still here and have shown flashes of quality, but are nowhere near the first team squad. Dembelle has all but disappeared. Harper has been getting excellent reviews but as a right winger, he has no chance. Our last notible youth player, Mikey Johnston, can't stay fit and is barely referenced. Our current number 3 goalkeeper is another prospect Hazard, but that is meaningless without being given an opportunity (league or early rounds Scottish cup) . Furthermore, he's 22 now and should be ahead of Bain. No one else is coming through. With the additional subs rule this season, this is the time to give youth a chance.

Robertson is well capable of first team football he's treading the same path as the legend that is McGregor.

Mcinroy if he hadn't got injured last season would have made the break through and dunfermline could be great for him and us.

I’ll agree with most of what you say and it’s been a perennial issue going back to when I started watching youth football to the time Derek Whyte was in the Under 18 team. Most of the youngsters just don’t develop beyond youth football and even the decent ones who do develop never get the chance of sustained first team action.

To me, the position regarding Ross Doohan and Conor Hazard is an enigma. I prefer Hazard out of the two of them and he’s done well to be promoted to number 3 keeper yet Doohan is getting games on loan. Hazard is getting Stevie Woods’ coaching experience and learning off Bain and Barkas but is that better than actual playing? Celtic’s young keepers have been excellent but they don’t get games. The dilemma for Lennon here is what happens if he sends Hazard on loan, as he was hoping to do, and who does he get in to replace him? Is Hazard good enough or got the experience to be a number 2? He’s good enough but not got the experience.

Scott Robertson will make it – I’ve no doubt about that and so will Cameron Harper. Harper is a main striker but cuts in from the right, a bit like Klimala. This is as much true as Dembele and Edouard who were main strikers and both cut in from the left. I also believe that this current youth squad is the most dynamic I’ve seen for years, yet you’re right about Henderson, O’Connell and Welsh. The latter 2 have the advantage, though, of being in positions where the team is weak so there may be more focus on their development, than say Karamoko and Henderson where their positions are strong.

Agree with everything you said lads. But the main thing for me if the first team players get injured they got a few bounce games with reserved to get up to speed and the reserves would get to play along side there heroes when getting up to speed we don't have that any more.

If we failed to get in a LB or LWB in the next few days do people think we should call O'Connor back from his loan. The guy is a LB and and Irish international.

Managing Celtic is a high pressure job and failure to win the league would mostly like result in the manager being sacked.

With that in mind, put yourself in the managers shoes when it comes to picking the team. Do you pick the experienced guy who is likely the better player right now or do you pick the player with potential who is at a lesser level?

Talking about Stevie Woods, I still can't believe he never went further than Motherwell in his playing career.

He is an outstanding goalkeeper coach, who is a natural at getting the best out of goalkeepers on our books.
