I understand if he’s on a free it’s possibly too good a chance to pass up especially when ange knows him inside out but the worry for me is still the lack of a physical presence in that team. Mooy, hatate, and even mcgregor might be physical in there own way but we’re building a team mostly with guys around 5ft 9 and below., and to put it in a nice way most of our starting 11 are going to be tiny.

The amount of goals we conceded last season from set plays should have been a warning sign, we’re absolutely done for in the champions league when it comes to corners and free kicks into the box.

I know what you're saying MK74 and I've also been calling for a CDM type player to add some steel in the middle of the park.

At the same time, last season's league table shows we scored more goals, 92, and conceded less goals, 22, than every other team in the league ?

I agree.

Domestically we've got more than enough strength in depth but in Europe, I think we could sign the starting 5 from the Harlem Globetrotters and still lose goals.

Not just through poor defending at set pieces (crosses) but by not adjusting tactically.

Morning All

On podcast last night there was chat around "modern game" eg goalkeepers being coached to play out from back, sweeper keeper etc

I think 1 of Celtic's poor defence at times especially from corners, free kicks etc is due to zonal marking we use. (modern game) .

Surely it's easier for our tallest defender to mark opposition tallest player and so on rather than zonal where that could be a smaller player marking there tallest?

Mibi am old fashioned but zonal marking, keeper playing out from back, sweeper keeper etc I don't think we're ther in 60,s, 70,s and 80,s (I maybe wrong) .

I think we need to be adaptable and not predictable in our play.
Teams will find us out and eventually could cost us very important games.

We need to be able to change our style of play, tactics etc depending on game and opposition.

I’m not the slightest bit worried domestically, I’ve got full faith we will only improve and go and score lots of goals and become champions again next year. In Europe however, it’s a totally different ball game and especially in the champions league. It might be good playing the fast open and silky stuff but that alone won’t win points in Europe, we’re severely lacking on the other side of the game, hard to break down, set pieces etc.

Let’s not forget we also conceded the most amount of goals in the europa league last season out of any other team. Ange however does know best after all us fans can only share an opinion but I must admit we’re going to struggle big time if we don’t properly rectify the faults from last season.

The thing with man for man marking is that top strikers lap it up. They want to be marked. Then at a corner they can 'lose' their marker in a crowded box easily. With zonal- if done properly- the striker can make a run, or turn back, or faint to go one way, or spin in behind his marker- if he does this then technically there should be someone else covering that zone- meaning there's never any space. It's the way to go and why most teams do it. You got to be good at it though.

You kinda have made my concerns for me.

When zonal marking is in place the oppo striker goes into a zone where one of our players are.

What if that player is smaller height wise etc.

Again, I maybe wrong but I think many goals scored against us was from headers or where our player should / could have headed ball out of danger?
