Nygren has received his fair share of criticism this season.
It was interesting Alan Morrison from Celtic By Numbers was comparing Nygren to Matt O’Riley from his 2023/ 24 season.
O’Riley scored 19 goals that season which Nygren is currently on with several games still to play.
Alan reckons Nygren has done brilliant considering the poor midfield and very poor strike force he’s played with this season.
Would O’Riley still be able to score 19 goals with inferior teammates and also how good would Nygren be in the 2023/ 24 Celtic team?

Spot on Buzz, he’s been our only performer this season for me.
MOR for me was a really good player going forward a bit like Nygren. It’s not his game to defend so let him stay up front.

I seen an article with a headline that it’s near impossible to call a Celtic player of the year -
It’s hardly been more obvious with Nygren being the only nominee.

Dont think the management have found his best position yet either and yes he could be better in a stronger midfield / team. i'd sell engels before nygren also offload hatate and bernado. money from that coold strengthen the midfield. get in 1 or hopefully 2 of real quality take a chance on elijah just and a development signing of watson (killie) .

Nygren couldn't lace O'Rileys boots.

Without Nygren's goals we would have sunk without trace and he is a clever, skillful player. I think in the middle of the park he disappears for long spells in games and is in my opinion not so much a midfield player as he is not a tackler or box to box runner.
I reckon he doesn't have the pace for a wide player but maybe more suited as an old style 8 or 10. I know it's highly unlikely, but MON could even play him in a front two?

Whilst I don't think Nygren's all round game is as good as O'Riley's - they're different kind of midfielders. Is Nygren even a 'proper midfielder' or more of a 10 as his positioning for his goals show? For me the latter as he doesn't have as much as MO'R in the engine room.
Regardless his goals have been important this season and who knows where we'd be without them.

I agree Tmc that Matt looks easier on the eyes although O’Riley did struggle in his 2nd season.
Matt is more of a box to box midfielder and Nygren is more of an attacking midfielder.
But according to Morrison their all round stats for Celtic are very similar.

For me Nygren isn't as good as MOR but he's had a great season and av had him as my poty before a ball was kicked don't know why??♂️but without him we wouldve been out league race.

Nygrens goals have been invaluable but if he ain't scoring he's invisible.

Nygren also has 4 in Europe and 1assist. more than mor done in all his time here. been through this before with mally but 15 goals and 5 assists (spl) is hardly invisible that's almost a contribution in half hour goal tally.
if you can go back over our games and look out for his individual performances i bet he's been involved more that you remember. he's a bit of a scapegoat for fans for some reason?
