Atletico Madrid (Thugs)

Watching the Manchester city game last night brought back a lot of bad memories that I thought I had put away to the back of my mind.
But this present day incarnation of the Spanish team brought all the memories back of our European Cup game with them in April 1974.
I was in the old Jungle that night and witnessed criminal assaults on our players especially wee Jimmy Johnstone who was kicked up and down the length of Celtic Park by these "Animals" (copyright Sir Alf Ramsey)
Their manager was Juan Carlos Alberta an Argentinian who first inflicted his savages against England in 1966, now here he was in 1974 as boss of the Madrid team, and filled it with more Argentine kickers, at the end of the game they had THREE PLAYERS SENT OFF AND SEVEN BOOKED.
The game ended 0-0 and to their eternal shame UEFA allowed the second leg to go ahead, despite all the thuggery, then the Spanish club BLAMED wee Jinky for their players getting sent off and poor wee Jimmy had to have a police escort because of DEATH THREATS to him.
That night in 1974 I saw the bravery of our wee Jinky, despite being kicked, and I mean KICKED, by almost EVERY Madrid player, he got up, wanted the ball and ran at them time after time. God Bless you wee man.
