Sad to hear that a true boxing legend has passed away at only 66.

Marvelous Marvin Hagler RIP and thanks for some great boxing memories. For anyone who loves boxing and has never watched his fight with Tommy the Hitman Hearns, you should do youreself a favour and search for it online.

One of my favourite boxers of all time.

Legend.

Some boxer.

I remember the great fights between Hagler Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran and Hearns. The greatest middleweights ever I wonder how Mayweather would have fared against any of these fabulous boxers.
I tell my son to watch these fights and those of Ali Foreman and Frazier if he wants to watchthe best fights ever.
I also recal the disgraceful scenes after the Alan Minter fight at Wembley.

I loved Roberto Duran he was a fighter rather than a boxer though.

Ali v Frazier 1971 is one for your son to watch.

Yeah the minter fight was crazy at the end.

This was a golden age with some amazing fighters, as you just mentioned with some great fights. I know Sugar Ray beat him on points but Marv will always be the greatest in my eyes.

Hagler was a true master, he could fight you on the outside or the inside and had this crazy long distance jab that you didn't see coming. He would move his feet into position and then just launch himself at his opponents and land a jab with the right and often followed with a left hook to the face.

Just reading about the passing of MMH. Watching his 'War' with Thomas 'The Hit Man' Hearns in 1985 got me interested in boxing.

Who can forget when he came over to London and destroyed Alan Minter.

He fought in a golden era of the Middleweight division with Hearns, Duran, Ray Leonard and not forgetting, hard as granite, Vito Auntofirmo (spelling incorrect no doubt) . These guys were Warriors.

He felt that despite all his hard work and achievements, he never truly got the recognition he deserved which is why he added 'Marvellous' infront of his given name so that when the media addressed him they had no option but to say it.

He was truly one of the greats.

Jonace, I'd also recommend your son watching another one of the all time greatest ever fighters - Ray Robinson. 'Sugar' was (IMHO) pound for pound, one of the very best.

Particularly the fights he had with Jake La Motta (Raging Bull) , those were legendary.

At heavyweight he could do a lot worse than look at documentaries of, Jack Johnson (way ahead of his time) , the undefeated Marciano, Jack Dempsey and for raw, explosive power, the early fights of Mike Tyson.

Pedro

The age old argument.

There is no doubting how explosive the young Mike Tyson was but Ali v Tyson both at their best - who wins?

14 Mar 2021 11:14:49
I'm sure Teddy Atlas would say Ali won it because he has serious doubts over Tyson's mentality.

JFP, as the great Reg Gutterudge once said; 'a good big un will always beat a good little un'.

14 Mar 2021 12:20:37
LAW, Teddy and Mike fell out years ago. One story goes that Atlas pulled a revolver on Tyson in the gym.

14 Mar 2021 16:07:54
I think the story was Tyson groped a girl at school and Teddy found out about it and pulled a gun on him. This was when they both lived with Cus D'Amato.

As a result they were not close for a very long time. However, I'm sure Tyson apologised for what he done fairly recent and they have mended some bridges.
