Gavin Strachan to take over Damien Duff role?! Gordon's son and assistant at Peterborough.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Jun 2020 23:04:39
Absolute shocking appointment and only reason he got the job is because of who his dad is. Not only am I unhappy that we have appointed him, I am peeved that we had to pay compensation as well.

If it turns out I am wrong and he proves to be an excellent coach, then I will be happy to apologise but I don't think I will have to.

21 Jun 2020 00:00:08
Were you expecting Guardiola? Just because he's come Peterborough doesn't mean he'll be a john barnes, not that I expect him to be like Guardiola either I might add but realistically who was in the frame?

21 Jun 2020 00:11:03
Young Strachan has been about.
He played for 10 different clubs before he took up his first coaching job 9 years ago.
Gavin worked his way up to Peterborough’s first team coach and then he got a chance to manage a non-league club but he left after only 4 months at the helm.

Gavin has been assistant manager to Darren Ferguson for the last 5 years at both Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough.
Here’s hoping he’s a chip off the old block and his father’s character and knowledge rubs off on him. Welcome To The Family. 🍀.

21 Jun 2020 00:40:03
If he isn't thought of highly we wouldn't be paying money for him. To say he is only getting the job because of his Father is ludicrous.

21 Jun 2020 00:42:57
Lennon what do you actually know about him?
We are bringing him in as a number 3 coach . Who did you expect?

21 Jun 2020 00:52:07
And if anyone thinks the Pistol Pete would PAY compensation for anyone just because they are the son of a former manager they don't have a clue.
The bold lawwell would have prompted from within and left them on the same wage.

21 Jun 2020 01:03:37
Harsh, give the guy a chance.

21 Jun 2020 06:20:11
what makes you think he is a shocking appointment genuine question.

21 Jun 2020 07:02:32
Bit of a shock to me as well can only think JK recommended him as they done there badges at the same time. Duff had little coaching experience but had played at a high standard I thought Darren Fletcher was a stick on for it. Sadly not Roy Keane 😭.

21 Jun 2020 08:25:04
Like me am sure you know hee haw about the boy so why you being so negative? he might be an outstanding coach he did his badges with big Kennedy so maybe he gave him the thumbs up. give him a chance our club are no bad at doing background checks so i'll go with there opinion rather than yours.

21 Jun 2020 09:48:42
Peterborough score a hell of a lot of goals I think I'm right in saying highest scorers in all the English leagues this season and if I remember right high scorers in previous seasons I'm hoping his coaching style contributes to that could actually be very decent appoitment, he needs a chance.

21 Jun 2020 10:21:46
The way our setup is structured just now the coaches play a pivotal role in the player development and tactical side of the game. That is why it was vital we made the correct appointment.

We know John Kennedy is a highly regarded coach and his areas of strength are the defensive and tactical side of the game. Therefore, I would have liked to see someone with great technical and attacking coaching attributes.

Personally I would have liked us to have invested in this area to get a top drawer coach in with innovative ideas but sadly that does not look like that will be happening.

{Ed007's Note - That's not how coaching works, you don't have different coaches for the defenders, midfielders and the attackers. Just because Kennedy was a defender doesn't mean he's a defensive coach or that it's his special area of expertise.}

21 Jun 2020 10:50:38
That's true I actually read I'm not sure if it was you ed that posted it on here it was actually duff that done a lot of work on improving our set pieces defenceveley.

{Ed007's Note - It wasn't me, Liam but I remember reading that too somewhere.}

21 Jun 2020 11:16:11
I think people forget - as impressive as John Kennedy was when he broke through - his career was effectively over at 21. I'm sure he does help the CBs with tips etc. but he doesn't have a wealth of top level game experience to draw on.

21 Jun 2020 12:16:49
How many times has it got to be said that john kennedy isn't a defensive coach?

21 Jun 2020 12:21:02
I'm actually quite happy we went out and paid to get someone in and not just promoted from within. Surely the guy has more about him otherwise we wouldn't be spending anything at all given the circumstances. I'm sure his dad would have given him plenty of advice over the years as well as Fergie to Darren so he's picked up information off some top experienced managers over time. Could turn out to be a shrewd bit of business.

21 Jun 2020 12:58:16
I didn't say you did have a separate coach for the defenders, midfielders and attackers, that was just your interpretation of what I said.

The coaching setup also veries widely from club to club, as do the roles of each job title.

I know both John Kennedy and Damian Duff were involved in the coaching of the first team players, as Neil Lennon said so. Lennon also said of Kennedy "he brings a lot of knowledge to the systems as well", which would indicate he has input on how the team is setup in terms of tactics and formations.

I stick by my earlier comment that John Kennedy's strengths as a coach are his tactical and defensive knowledge of the game.

{Ed007's Note - You can stand by it if you want but that doesn't make it right and you're basing it solely on the fact he was a defender, there's nothing to back it up and as he is actually NL's assistant tells you he has a lot more strings to his bow than his so called defensive knowledge that he garnered playing 45 professional games when he was 20-years old kid 17/18 years ago.}

21 Jun 2020 13:36:36
That's why the rat wanted him to go with him hh.

21 Jun 2020 13:54:08
I am not basing it on the fact he was a defender, I am basing it on bits and pieces I have picked up in interviews with him and other backroom staff members over the years.

Believe it or not, football manager also has a an excellent data base on players and backroom staff. I hear you laugh but elite clubs actually use it as well to identify players, which indicates how good it actually is. In their data base it lists John Kennedy's main strengths as tactical and defensive knowledge.

What I am not basing it on, is what someone on the internet said, which is what some people do.

{Ed007's Note - That answer doesn't even warrant a laughing gif..... oh what the Hell

Just showing your ignorance of what goes into the making of football manager's data base and why it is so valued within the real footballing community.

{Ed007's Note - Yeah because that's exactly where clubs look when they need a coach..... Football Manager! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Is a straw man argument the best you can do?

Instead of trying to mask your ignorance with a fallacious argument, why don't you go and read about the rigorous measures Sports Interactive deploy to gather the data for their data base. Also go and read up on how top level clubs use the data base.

I can only point you in the right direction, it is up to you if you want to remain ignorant on the topic.

For the record I am not saying that the data base is 100% accurate but it does provide a very good approximation on the most part, hence the reason many clubs are using it.

{Ed007's Note - Let's hope Nick Hammond has spent the lockdown scouting on FIFA 20 for us eh? You said:

"We know John Kennedy is a highly regarded coach and his areas of strength are the defensive and tactical side of the game."

And you back that up with Football manager 😂😂😂😂
This conversation is over, we have a video games site if you want to talk about them.}

21 Jun 2020 15:14:47
Is that not where hearts got Cathro 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

{Ed007's Note - I dread to think what his main strengths were on it 😂😂😂😂😂

21 Jun 2020 17:09:23
Answer me this before I go, if there is no merit in the football manager database then why are top clubs using it to help them make footballing decisions?

{Ed007's Note - Clubs use the player data for analysis but name me one club that has used FM to hire a coach at any level - name me just one single club that has done that....

21 Jun 2020 18:26:52
Going by that logic is someone able to fast forward the current FM and get us a few of the young hidden Gems and make us millions selling them Also the best up and coming coaches for when NL leaves after the 12.

21 Jun 2020 18:40:56
CampsieBhoy many clubs are already using the data in this way. They use Football Manager database to identify players who fit the profile they want and then go and scout them in person.

21 Jun 2020 18:54:05
A seen a thing before mate that FM was compiled from scouting reports Iv not played a computer in over 20 years so have no idea how these things operate.

22 Jun 2020 02:03:05
There is something some use but I doubt it's football manager. Read something about Ranieri using some database to sign Mahrez based on data compiled from it that's accessible to anyone not sure what it is but doubt it's a computer game lol.
