Did anyone else notice today that Craig Gordon had good distribution and his kicking went further than the half way line he had a good game all round imo I always liked him as a keeper but have went off him over the last year so credit where it is due. brown was also back to doing what he does better kolo is looking like a leader what have been looking for to really enjoying watching the bhoys again.

Careful now don't let positivity creep in too much. Cg stopped a few shots (at him) made a few saves (expected ones) . Good game I'd say yeah he did for what he had to do.
Tony changed his boots lol.

Gordon normally plays quite well, when he is not under a lot of pressure and it isn't a vital game . He let's himself down in vital games.

Vorm. no smoke without fire, and there is starting to be a lot of smoke imo, also I agree with LG being greedy it's getting more noticeable, but I heard a player during pre season say BR has asked them to shoot more after he watched last seasons games, and to be fair LG is one of the best strikers of a ball we have at parkhead, #Keep The Faith!

I would like someone to tell CG that you are aloud to keep the ball between the white lines from a bykick. You don't always have to boot it into the stands.

More interestingly i was hearing tonight that John Beaton the referee of our game today v Hearts and awarder of phantom penalties used to have a season ticket in the govan stand rear at ibrox, i would suggest that after watching his performance today that maybe he hasn't gave up his seat yet.

Throw away your shovel :) you didn't have to dig for that, he had the look. Dished out a few yellows and depending on the bounce toure was dicing with death with that late challenge. It could of been worse all things considered. His shake has shifted a finger :)

Today when it was 1-1 Rodgers went with 3 at the back to go for the win. When we got the lead he changed it back to 4 at the back this is something we would never have seen from deila he would have stuck it out and we would have ended up with a draw. I like the fact he changed it up to go for it happy Celt today.

At last we have a manager that is tactically aware, a manager that can see that things are not working and change it during a game. The changes he made today changing the formation of the team is a breath of fresh air. We've had years of managers subbing like for like and hoping something happens. I predict good times ahead.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2016 16:49:18
The bashing of Rd is really getting boring, how about just praising br 4 the changes he made at the right times, rather than trying to use it to put Rd down. Funny if Rd hadn't brought on rogic against Killie we'd have drawn that game n that was a big game at that stage of the season, n by supposedly not being able 2 deploy tactics, make the right changes etc he still won 3 trophies out of 6 n we all know we were cheated out of at least 2 more.
Not bad 4 a guy who can't change a game.
Credit to br as he made a change and it worked, deserved victory and a good hard won 3 points.
Here we go 10 in a row.

I think we are shaping up very well. We would have lost that game last year. I was impressed by Hearts also and don't think many teams will take 3 points from there this year. I think Dembele, Toure and Sinclair have definitely improved the 1st 11 which is the shift we needed from signing numerous projects and squad players.
I reckon we need to sign a GK, creative midfielder and another striker and we will have the makings of a superb team and one with the ability to deliver away from home in Europe playing fast counter attacking football like our winner.
For me i'd sell or loan Efe, Boyata, Henderson, commons, Cifti, Christie and Fisher. By rough calculations this will save another £75k per week from the wage bill on top of the savings we made from mulgrew, Allan, CKR, Cole and the others and would cover the wages for the 3 quality additions I have mentioned.
I'd be delighted with Vorm but got no idea on the other positions but with circa 75k per week to spend on wages then I reckon we can get proper quality.
What's everyone's thoughts on this?

07 Aug 2016 22:05:40
That's just about spot on Marty expected I would keep Christe I think he will come good! Get a good playmarker in a good defensive midfielder, a keeper and a striker and I would think we will walk the league and have a descent run in Europe.

Hearts always give us a game at the bile-bowl and they did play very well - even though some of our guys were below par.
I mentioned on the live-chat yesterday that I feel we have too many soft-touches in midfield and not enough dig and power.
McGregor, Armstrong, Christie, Bitton and Rogic don't have a tackle between them and you can include the wide players in that.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2016 20:53:12
Great start and will only get better when Rodgers gets all on same page. I would like LG to realize a pass to a player and getting a goal is just as good as scoring (not bashing him) . Like when he chested it down in box and took a shot when Dembele was wide open free top of box 5 yards away and better position to score.

Ed could shed some light on this knowing BR tactics or your opinion. Why is KT not doing more crosses? KT is 1 of the best crossers I have seen, he always puts it in dangerous place in box and never misses. Also why not let KT take corners with his great crosses? I know it's early in season but we need to use KT crosses and hope BR does more.
Also Gordon again miss judges a cross which almost leads to a free header goal. he has been lucky to be in team cause of the cheap option. Badly need a better keeper if we won't to go far in Europe.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2016 03:20:22
Rglen8. I know but KT really is a superstar player and he checks his runs, understands/ reads the game and always gives his all to get back to win the ball if he coughed it up.

We have to give Delia credit in how he used KT! Last year KT was a main focus on offense and he put in a lot of crosses which always led to chances. Having toure/ sevchenko to hold back let's him to go forward. Just don't want to lose his crosses or runs cutting in middle cause he really is an all round player that we need to help get offense going.

Ed, are we trying to sign PR on a permanent deal if we happen to qualify for CL this year?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - I doubt it.}

07 Aug 2016 21:56:43
Do you think we will try and sign him after the loan?

{Ed007's Note - I hope so but a lot will depend on Man City. Hopefully it'll become clearer after the turn of the year.}

07 Aug 2016 23:15:58
Thanks again Ed!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - We managed to sign Forster after 2 seasons on loan which I never thought would happen so fingers crossed Paddy has a successful season and fancies it AND Peter Lawwell can get a deal done. It'll depend on what City want for him, forget all the rubbish about City paying £12 million for him, that's what the deal could be worth to them with add ons.}

08 Aug 2016 02:04:07
I don't think we could clear it. What was his initial fee 4-5? If/ when he has a decent season with us city will take him back and sell. Only hope is that he becomes a celtic nutter and forces a deal himself.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I don't think City would be hard to deal with if Paddy fancied making his move permanent. No offence to the lad but he's got about as much chance of getting in that City first team as I have, they don't exactly need to even recoup their outlay let alone make a profit, and we do have a good relationship with City and one of their employees.}

08 Aug 2016 22:09:01
I am not really rating P R chances of playing regularly for Manchester City, but really Ed007, no harm to yourself, and Idon't mean to be disrespectful but I do think Paddy is a little ahead of you.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I don't know, Chris, Paddy's as one footed as I am.}

07 Aug 2016 20:48:02
So Guys a good result today for our first game . Good to see Scott Sinclair get off the mark.
Now is it down to BR or PL or JP that we have been able to get in some quality players. Dembele / Sinclair/ Toure and no doubt another few to come in CL money or not.
As we are a team then its well done to Celtic.

Enjoyed the game today a bit of a battle!
Sinclair already looks like he will be a great signing and when Paddy Roberts is fit that gives us good width on both sides.
I still feel we lack a really good Playmaking Central Midfielder, for me McGregor is just not at the races if we get someone in who can play that defence splitting pass we could have a great attacking team! I also. Think although brown had a great game we could do with a sitting midfielder someone who can win the ball then make a good forward pass! Brown is coming back on to a game but he needs someone to push him for his place! Over all we are getting there!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

07 Aug 2016 21:16:12
every player should have a deputy behind them to ensure that we get maximum effort every week

BR has decided to go with Brown and maintain him as Captain and that tells me that BR has nailed his colours to mast with regard to Scott and his future (this year at least) in a Celtic jersey from the get-go.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2016 21:52:37
I Agree Paradisewon, Rogers clearly sees Brown as his stitting Midfielder, but is Brown the player he was 2 or 3 seasons ago? Far from it! I think we need to be looking to replace him he might be able to still do it in the SPL but I worrie for Champions league if we get there! I would like to see a big Wanyama type player in there!

Agree0 Disagree1

08 Aug 2016 07:17:30
Gazcfc you are absolutely spot on with your assessment of McGregor. I can't fault the lad's commitment but at the end of the day he simply doesn't cut it. I genuinely think Christie d Henderson are far superior players in a technical sense and have the ability to make those defence splitting passes you refer to.

Wasn't of best performance, but enjoyed the game, tynecastle is always a tough venue, very physical. Considering this came on the back of a European game, it's a very good 3 points. Teams still got a way to go, players still getting used to each other and br methods. But we are starting to look like a totally different proposition for teams compared to last season. we deploy multiple tactics during games, once we have added a few more, Its great to look forward to games now opposed to last year! Love watching today more than can be said for the last 2 years. Apart from the running i thought tactically the players were leaps and bounds above last year. Without the ball organised and closing down, blocking being first to the breakdown, when we had the ball prepared to take risks flicks and twists first time touches. I saw a lot to be hopeful on.

A special mention on here for young o'Connell.

Thrown in at deep end due to circumstance (injuries and a certain bombscare) and he has been SUPERB!

So much so, that yofsy alongside Toure, I never once missed big Eric or Jozo - and that's all down to how well he's slotted in there.

With Eric and Jozo on the mend, and O'connell able to step in, I don't see much room for boyata or efe.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2016 22:30:03
O'Connell has been excellent and Eric and Jozo will have a fight on their hands getting the jersey off him if he continues like this.

Boyata is 25 now and turns 26 in November. He has already been at Man City with Toure and some other excellent defenders like Kompany and looks like he hasn't learned much already. I don't think he will improve and I can see him leaving if someone is willing to take him.

I felt that when it was 1-1 it was the type of match we would have lost last season.
The last minute winner against Astana on Wednesday and the late goal today suggests that we seem better both tactically and mentally, hopefully we can maintain this.
I agree about Gordon, he is looking like a real weak link in the team. I would like to get a goalkeeper in who can command his box and take the pressure off the defence, (and us fans) .

Wasn't best game I've ever seen today but any win at tynecastle is always a good win as far as I'm concerned what I did like about today was the fight and the communication between the players think that was a lot to do with toure being on the pitch in my opinion him being there gave the players extra confidence especially young O'Connell who wasn't scared to have a go when needed don't know if anyone agrees but I thought for the hour Armstrong played he looked as if he's gained a couple of yards of pace final point I thought the way Rodgers conducted himself after the game was very refreshing especially his honesty about the game and individual players sorry I've went on guys not posted for about 2 years just won my cancer fight so a bit tipsy and happy.

Up front in the forward positions we look good so good signs, although 1 or 2 more signings as well as hopefully anew goalkeeper I'd feel that was a strong team, minus 3 or 4 more of the squad players who won't get a game. so for me today there were glimpses of progress

any new manager will see players prosper and players move backwards . they won't all progress at the same rate

first to what i liked

Toure's positioning (with the exception of the ball one the top that saw Muirhead get away from him)

brown 1st half (i thought at least) was outstanding . positioning. tackling . passing. and the odd spurt with the ball at his feet drawing fouls . excellent

Kieran Tierney just goes from strength to strength with outstanding durability .

i thought we had a great 30 minutes in the 1st half were we actually controlled the game IE looked like scoring and didn't look like conceding

Their goal gave them a reason to be hopeful and super motivated and that shaped the 2nd half

for me there was 30 minutes of the second half were the quality (and composure) and shape was very reminiscent of last season (BR called it character and resilience) ; I call it a waste of 30 minutes were there was little in the way of quality

our goal was fantastic but pre goal I did not enjoy watching LG and MD (LG for me didn't play for the team up to the goal at least. he was far too greedy and made a series of very poor decisions) . MD was very clunky and (at best) a pest . too clumsy today for me (but then tynecastle can do that to you I guess)

if we didn't score our great counter attacking goal we would be rounding the wagons and so we need to be both fair and balanced

today was a great 3 points but it wasn't a great performance . but then we weren't at full strength . and there still needs to be 1 or 2 first X1 additions .

CM (box to box) for me and (tin hat on) a striker . even at this early stage i don't think LG and MD are a partnership. we need a penalty box striker in the mould of kevin phllips . i accept that this may be a premature assessment and may regret these words when both bang in 50 each but i think goals (from up top) could be an issue this week because we don't have a natural predator

thumbs up for forrest 1st half . but still indifferent about the bhoy.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

07 Aug 2016 19:02:37
Wells said md especially feeling the pressure to score, seems to only think about shooting instead of easy ball aswell as a few 30 yard strikes for lg which could have been better used with passes.

Was great to see a manager, who unlike Ronnie, change the formation, tactics whilst early and at 1-1 . Go from 4-4-2 to 3-5-1 . Not scared to throw on a player who was signed only hours earlier .

We got the lead, then made another tactical change to go 4-5-1 and ensure we defended and took the 3 points .

Time will tell if Rodgers is good / bad?

It's just a relief to see a manager see, try n change before the 85th minute.

maybe what Broony needed was manager that knew how to set up a team, he was asked to do too much useless running for the last two seasons . he has been excellent in these first few games now that he is clear of injury and has had a chance to get his fitness back. I thought Forrest was great today! no doubt ere will be games when it doesn't come off for him as that is the nature of wingers! but hope BR gets him signed up. All that is needed is for Mulgrew to come and some of our poster will need psychotropic medication.

In a whole page of comments I am surprised nobody has mentioned, probably the biggest reason Hearts were able to apply pressure on us, the award of the penalty by referee for incident the ref didn't see, The ref clearly demonstrated that he heard something as he pointed to his ears . Probably the Hearts fans, as he made no attempt to speak to his assistant as he did on other occasions .
7 Bookings of Hearts players, surely one or two had to be reds, remember the tackle on Kieran Tierney, red every day of week .

come on

the "punch" as you put it was feigned …the fan was absolutely not intending to "land" and to say otherwise or think otherwise would be plain and simple bias …sinclair shouldn't have "left" the pitch first and foremost and in so doing invited a degree of controversy

great great goal mind you.

Enough is enough with this blatant cheating by referees against us, i'm sick of this honest mistake crap, everybody watching that game can see there was no contact by Tierney on their player, its obvious that there is an anti-Celtic agenda with these refs. It's time the Celtic board grew a set and made an official complaint about it.

Believable11 Unbelievable2

07 Aug 2016 17:16:43
What good will an official complaint do? No point. The great Jock Stein talks about it 50 years ago. You have to accept these decisions. You don't have to like them but that's the way it is. Complaining will achieve nothing. Follow the BR example. Like he said, an "honest mistake". Who cares we won. Hail Hail.

for me the ref gave the penalty because it looked like one from his angle although we know it was a blatant dive i hope walker gets hammered for it he even done it again late on trying to get scot brown sent off absolute low life as i said in the live chat they need to chop off any goal scored through blatant diving to win pens and alter the result accordingly then hammer the player with hefty suspensions to try and root out the cheats.

Agree1 Disagree3

07 Aug 2016 17:51:52
A complaint will bring it out in the open and shame and show up these masons for what they are this has happened since our inception not just now, i don't need to accept their dodgy decions its just out and out blatant cheating. And as for Brown not getting sent off what about Sammon not getting sent off for a worse challenge than Browns when on a yellow? I know if we complain we probably won't get anywhere as this is the same Sfa that let rangers get away with anti-Catholic bigotry for over 100 years, but it will let them know we won't let them away with it.

Agree3 Disagree0

07 Aug 2016 17:54:52
Broony didn't put a tackle in that deserved a red card but two heart players did. Kolo didn't foul the guy he just fell over. No swings and roundabouts there just rank bad refereeing.

Agree3 Disagree0

07 Aug 2016 17:56:49
Bh am not being biased never even a booking for broony and never a pen.

Agree3 Disagree0

07 Aug 2016 18:15:13
Jamesbhoy calm down your skin. there is no bias against anyone. As AlanP says it's just crap refereeing. You do need to accept it because complaining about it won't make any difference. So when we get a bad decision against us in Europe, is that biased, because we have had plenty of them.

Agree0 Disagree3

07 Aug 2016 18:20:40
the referee got a few things wrong today

it affected BOTH sides

he also got a lot right

in first half he went through a whistle happy 10 minutes and the penalty was the last part of that "spell"

our 1st goal IMVHO could easily have been chalked off …it wasn't …where was the bias there

i also think that scott brown was very very fortunate not to get booked and that Watt was extremely unfortunate to get booked for his exchange with Brown ….

swings and roundabouts for me…. today at least.

Agree0 Disagree3

07 Aug 2016 18:21:39
i know they weren't offences bhoys, my point is if the refs have it in for us there was two flashpoints that they couldve used, could easily have given a pen against KT, SB couldve got a 2nd yellow also, i don't think there's any bias, i just think the standard is honking tbh.

Agree0 Disagree3

07 Aug 2016 18:29:38
No conspiracy, just a mistake by the referee, who was let down by his linesman, retrospective action against Walker will at least in some part discourage any would be divers, maybe a three match ban for anyone judged to have dived blatantly, other cases which are too close to call but might involve just as much cheating, will have to be judged differently,

Agree0 Disagree4

07 Aug 2016 18:36:04
Whether it's biased, incompetence or even cheating, it's up to Celtic to make an issue of any of these recurring incidents publicly after the games, using the video evidence, to make the establishment and the officials aware that they are under severe scrutiny,
Sir Alex did it at Old Trafford for decades and it served as some form of deterrent or at least made them think twice?

Johnny have you actually been watching Celtic games over the years? There has been an agenda against us since 1888, these people cannot stomach what we stand for and what we represent, to say there is no bias against us is just laughable. There even has been admission's of guilt by these biased bigoted referee's usually at rangers nights on the after dinner speaking circuit. You can believe what you want that's your own perogative but me and millions of other Celtic fans know what is going on with these biased refs.

The innocence of some, not half an hour into season and the officials conspire to do us once again .
It's never a conspiracy against Celtic but the managers that took it on the chin had more to take on chins than those who made a song and dance about it .
The great J Stein didn't let them away without commenting . He told one referee he was as big a bastard as his father had been . The ref was afraid to charge him.

i could get a ticket but as for the knuckle dragging goons…it didn't sound too clever with 500 or so belting out "go on home british soldiers go on home"…I'm not sure what part of the world they are occupying at the moment …wherever it is when Scott Sinclair my good mate (a major in the army no less) would have been leaping for joy and running around like a crazed maniac with excitement ….

Not a great performance but 3 points that's what champions do.
How did we win that game? Was it LG or SS or even Forrest, a no for me.
Today the manager won the game for us that's what good managers do, they see something and act on it.
What a refreshing change to see the manager be decisive and be ambitous instead of being a rabbit in headlights.
Now I not saying he will win every game for us but the more you make the CORRECT decisions the more it will run for you. Make bad decisions and its unlikely to make a difference.
Also on a sidenote what a great interview after the game. The man is so composed and it must come across to the players.

Good comments. I think they key here is that the manager made changes, he had alternative ideas. RD, bless him, did not seem to have a plan B. It was plan A all the way.
Not labouring RD as I ended up liking the guy but he was put in the position too soon.
BR is bringing something to the table we have need for a wee while. Very early days but some positive movement and Tyncastle is never an easy place to get 3 points (especially when the refs are just warming up as well and making more honest mistakes than usual! )

I like B R and I think we were exceptionally lucky to get him and again great praise to the board for signing him up . B R made very brave decisions today and fortune favoured the brave and the brave decisions became good decisions .
However, football is a team game and it was the good play of several players Lustig Toure O'Connel Tierney Brown Forrest and to a lesser extent Leigh& Dembole, these players and B R won the game . The players have the confidence in B R to carry out Brendan's instruction and that makes a big difference.

I think we can safely say that Craig Gordon contributed greatly to our first 3 points of the season. I'm happy for him and hope it gives him the confidence to getting himself back to being a commanding keeper again. Never a penalty but were used to it, well done the players n br, Sinclair good finish n some good touches and pace for the goal was superb, dembele looked strong, lady n a real threat all day, lg worked hard and played more of a team role, great setup 4 the goal. Brown 4 me game by game getting back to his best, n we were pretty solid in defence. Afternoon Ed,

Talk of Sinclair being involved today is that paper talk or possible truth

Deal was done late yesterday I cannot see the beaks office being open on a Saturday for registration mate or have they learned via previous harsh lessons ie Cadete/ Farry.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed007's Note - During the transfer window the SFA will - or at least they should - have someone available to sort the registration process out of normal office hours.}

07 Aug 2016 13:23:39

{Ed007's Note - A £4 million bargain? We'll see lol.}

07 Aug 2016 11:32:09
So that's 3 in with another 3 to come according to BR. Who/ what positions do we think will be targeted next? For me -

GK - Vorm would be a great signing but I think Gabulov is more likely.

CM - We need someone who can pick a pass and boss a game on a consistent basis. Norwood perhaps? There must be someone on the continent within our reach surely. Hakim Ziyech would be the dream for me but can't see it happening.

ST - If Ciftci leaves we need another forward. Bamford would be a good third choice and can also play as a right winger or no10.

Initially felt we needed a new right back this summer but I'm now warming to Janko and still think Lustig is excellent as long as he isn't expected to play every game.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

07 Aug 2016 12:43:17

I agree dafabet, the game against Astana on Wednesday night is the most comfortable I have been watching Celtic in Europe in a long time, I think if it's three players a new goalkeeper, centre mid with a bit of quality and hold off until January to see how the strikers are doing would work, we have the base of a good squad, there is just a wee bit of the jigsaw missing🍀🍀.

I think it is just the normal transfer deadline around 31 August.

We signed Scepovic on transfer deadline day in 2014 and he played and scored in Europe.

07 Aug 2016 00:21:39
Celticforever, Ed, I fear you are both right. Craig Gordon was a top class keeper, however since his injury he has lacked the authority and dominance he once possessed. I am glad he signed for us simply because I think he deserved another opportunity at the top level and the fact that we give few chances away has helped him and has prolonged his career. However sentiment aside if we are to progress, in Europe especially, we need to improve in all departments and GK is not exempt.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - What really annoyed me was that after the money we got for Forster we forced Gordon on a new manager, what would we have done if he had broke down in the October? He didn't and I know it's all what ifs but surely Rocky and Bullwinkle could see how big a risk they were taking.
Even though he's made major blunders he gets the sympathy vote from fans and Efe's mistakes take the heat off him Lawwell and Park have been very, very lucky with the Gordon gamble, and fair play to him for staying fit, I hope he keeps playing for years, just not for Celtic.}

When you are that young all you see is the players in the hoops.
I wish I could go back to watching celtic that way instead of hearing about how much the chairman makes
Or how much that player was sold for and how much His replacement cost.
I take my 7 year old daughter and she still watches that way. With just the joy of being there to see celtic.
