On the UK and Ireland celtiic teams, and well said ED on Davie Hay the silent assassin, (what a nickname! ) .

Simpson

McGrain Reiper McNeill Gemmell

Murdoch Hay Lubo

Johnstone Larrson Dalgliesh.

Wow, it's quite hard eh?

Anyone have any idea why musonda is getting no game time? A player who was pushing for a place in the Chelsea starting 11 and who played a lot of football in la liga should surely be getting on off the bench at least to prove himself?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

08 Apr 2018 00:40:00
Maybe he has a bad attitude or maybe Rodgers just wants Roberts to get game time or maybe musonda needs to bulk up a bit as he is easily brushed off the ball.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Apr 2018 00:43:44
We have 3 players in the squad who can cut open a packed defence when we are struggling to break a team down:

Rogic
Roberts
Musonda

On wednesday night BR took off one and left the other two on the bench.

Something personal? Rodgers making a stand by not playing loan players (he did say he wasn’t a fan of loans when he first came in) ? Who knows why but one things for sure - its costing us points.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Apr 2018 00:02:20
Why do u think Mosunda can open up a defence.

With the sheep getting pumped when's the earliest we can win the league assuming we win tomorrow.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

07 Apr 2018 16:53:02
Assuming we win tomorrow. The first fixture after the split we would win the league if we won that fixture (Y)

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 17:29:18
Thought that Jamie is it sevco.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 17:38:24
Definitely not mally that is exactly how they have delayed that to avoid that powder keg where possible 👍.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 18:02:29
I think we only have 2 home games, so if they delay the game against newco, we would then get presented with the league trophy against them after pumping them😂.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 18:11:11
Can you imagine the EPL or any other league for that matter not wanting a game like that to decide the league. Only in Scotland, embarrassing.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 18:24:06
Jamie : get a bet on this idea: we beat Accies on Sunday, the bet i would put on is this.
The 1st game after the split will be the Sheep at home to wrap up the title, that would be us at 16 and 4 games left.

we will get the huns poss the 2nd or 3rd game in to the last 5.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 18:39:53
You can be sure as well that if Sevco could win the title against us they would have no hesitation in having the game played.
They just don't want to upset Sevco and their cronies.

Agree4 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 19:56:53
Cheers Jamie did t think they'd let us win it against the huns.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 22:15:03
I can see the 3rd fixture (weekend May 5th) for the sevco game. 2nd last fixtures a midweek and the last game, forget it. Cops won't allow it. 1st game, again, won't be allowed due to possibly winning it in front of them so I see the corrupt sfa avoiding the 2nd fixture in case things still up in the air (which I doubt) .

Agree0 Disagree1

07 Apr 2018 23:43:16
It is an embarrassment and affront that our governing football body is so cowardly and corrupt as to allow bigotry and sectarianism to dictate it's fixture list, appointed officials and kick-off times to cater for the shame that must not be defied.

Agree1 Disagree0

08 Apr 2018 00:42:41
All we have to do is delay us winning ie letting the first team after the split getting a draw and so on till we can win it against sevco.

Agree1 Disagree0

08 Apr 2018 05:20:49
It would be magic to do it against them but the sooner we win it the sooner we can rest some players and give others a chance.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Apr 2018 08:55:14
Steph i'd love to see Aitchison get a run out as soon as the league is won. Give him a boost and something to focus on after what he has gone through recently. He certainly would not let us down. Don't know how Johnstons injury is but it would be nice to see him get a run out before the season ends if he is fit in time, maybe he won't be risked.

Agree0 Disagree0

Merseyside derby total pants crap atmosphere a weakened Liverpool but Everton are terrible. imagine watching one of big sams teams every week.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

07 Apr 2018 14:29:44
Awful, awful game and although Wayne Rooney is past his very best - what talent and vision that's left is wasted in that pub managers team. He'd be better off well away from N0-Goodison Park.
Liverpool were in second gear without several stars and lost a great chance of an easy three points - obviously prioritizing the CL.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 14:35:11
@Mally was going to post something similar. Mrs T dropped a pin and woke me up.
Also hope that puts to bed these daft rumours about Coleman and Ings coming to Celtic, both slow, ponderous and off the pace.
And it also proves that without Salah, Liverpool are garbage.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 15:32:12
Tim ings looked awful clumsy slow and wouldn't get in our team but a quite like young Coleman just back from horrific leg break.

Agree0 Disagree0

George Connelly.

My first time to Celtic Park was to watch the Bhoys play against Ujpest Dosza in the European Cup in October 1972, I had just turned 11 the week before
And was so excited to see my favourite player of all time Jinky.
The team that night was
Williams
Hay
Mcgrain
Connelly
Callaghan
Johnstone
Dalgliesh
Deans
Macari
Hood

Not a bad team for your your first time

Although the hero of the night was Dalgleish
He scored both the Celtic goals that night
I remember on the way home my Uncle John and his mate Frank McLaughlin could stop talking about George Connelly and how he was head and shoulders, they may have used different words, above anyone in the team that night

I think that sums up how good Connelly was when he stood out that night in a great team with great players.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Apr 2018 06:53:29
Great post Jimmy. Before my time but enjoy reading up on old players that wore the hoops. Do you or any others have any info on Callaghan? I remember my great uncle talking about how good a player he was but didn't really get the recognition like others.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Apr 2018 09:22:12
Have heard loads of people say how good Connolly was and that it was a shame that he retired early from the game.

Unfortunateely, I never had the pleasure of seeing him as I was too young. Only guys I saw from that team were McGrain and Dalglish.

Got an (almost) certain treble in the footie today.
Liverpool, Saint Mirren and (gulp) Sevco.
On Wednesday Dundee played out of their skins deending, watch them meekly roll over today, well wee McCann has to repay his EBT somehow lol.

Ed, Gents.

Based on who you have grown up watching at CP, or who you regarded as one of your favourites what team would you list based on players from the UK and Ireland only. Clearly age will be a factor and throw up some decent line ups. My 11 with subs is.

P. Bonner

T. Boyd
P. Elliot
A. Stubbs
K. Tierney

S. Brown
P. McStay
P. Lambert
T. Burns

C. Sutton
G. Hooper

Subs
J. Hartson
L. Griffiths
J. Ledley
J. McNamara
A. Thompson.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - I'd have Danny McGrain in before KT and Brian McClair before Hooper at least.}

07 Apr 2018 11:19:47
Just a bit before my time Ed, Was 7 or 8 when I first went around 86/ 87 and for some reason Burns was always in my memory. Possibly the red hair made him stand out to the rest at that age 😁.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It is an age thing, there'll be folk old enough to have seen the Lions play and they'll pick at least some of them.}

07 Apr 2018 12:00:08
ED007 as you predicted, us "doddery guys" had the privilege of watching the Lisbon Lions in the flesh therefore MY team
Simpson, Craig, Gemmell, Murdoch, Mcneil, Clark, Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld and Lennox.
That team were not only the Invincibles but the Untouchables also hail hail.

{Ed007's Note - I thought you'd have had a couple of the 1938 Empire Exhibition Trophy winning team in yours, Tim.}

07 Apr 2018 13:16:22
Player I would most liked to have seen play was Cesar. Was lucky enough to have met him when I was a kid at East End Park in 89. Always loved listening to him talk about the club whether on the tv or radio always positive.

Have a go Jamie be good to see what your 11 is. What type of player was Hay Ed?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - He was a hard as nails midfielder, Stan but he couldn't half play a bit too. A mix of the best bits of Scott Brown and Paul McStay, would that be a fair assessment of Davie Hay Tim?}

07 Apr 2018 14:30:09
Bonner mcgrain kt Elliot aitken burns mcstay brown dalglish Nicholas provan.

07 Apr 2018 14:35:47

Subs would be hard Brown, Provan, Griff, McGarvey, McLeod, could go on.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 14:28:00
Sounds like the complete midfielder Ed. I feel blessed to have grown up watching McStay even through the hard times.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - McStay is one of my footballing heroes, we were definitely privileged to have watched him for so long. It was just a pity there weren't more like him in the team back then.}

07 Apr 2018 15:05:32
A rare breed Ed would love KT to follow his example. Good line ups gents. Just when i'm seeing Aitken in a few line ups i forget how much i loved him as a player. Hard as nails and could certainly play a bit for a defender.

The Lisbon Lions were undoubtedly all wonderful players but just after them I think we had a better player than any of them . George Connolly, he was really outstanding and it was probably the saddest thing that happened Celtic was the demon drink shortening this fantastic footballer's career.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I ended up reading a bit about Connelly when I was reminiscing about Davie Hay today Chris. Was it true that Jock Stein felt he needed to split him and Hay up but when Hay left for Chelsea it had the opposite effect on Connelly? There's a lot of Celtic supporters in my age group that don't know much about George Connelly so it would be good to hear from some of the older posters about players like him.}

I included George Connelly in my selection above and although his Celtic career was sadly too short, he was one of the most natural, confident and coolest, ball-players I ever saw.
Although I put him in defense, he could play almost anywhere and I fondly remember two of his best, big occasion goals - the third, in a 4-0 cup final against Rangers in '69 and the winner against (The best team in britain lol) - Revie's Leeds Utd at Elland Road in the first leg of the EC semi-final (0-1 Celtic) .
I have a vague memory from my father who told me of his introduction to the Celtic support at HT in a European game at Celtic Park, where he juggled the ball continuously for the duration of the interval much to the appreciation of the crowd.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I'll try and dig up some videos of him tomorrow. Mind me on the live chat about it (yes)

08 Apr 2018 02:46:14
I am sure Jock thought George Connelly was a bad influence on David Hay and led him to drink too often . But big George was a lonely type person from a small village I believe and hated been in Glasgow . Davey Hay was about the one person at the club George trusted and he went to pieces when D H left .
B Lennox, I think claims that George's big brother was a bit of a waster and encouraged George to go on frequent binges together .
Hay was a brilliant footballer and I think it was George who tells the story that when they played centre half together if D H passed to him, he would return ball to D H and shout for ball back . Connelly would see Stein climbing out of the dug out to give out a bollicking but Connelly would still return to D H . Stein would be limping and growling towards them and D H would eventually clear the ball. Big George would call over "coward " and laugh . Hay would be worried about what would happen with Stein afterwards .
I don't think Stein would like our current tactics of playing ball along back four and back

But George Connelly was unique, could play any midfield row, as well as centre half, he always had time on the ball, he worried whilst playing centre half he was dominant in the air . He didn't need to be as he followed the flight of the ball brilliantly and was always in the best place to win the header .
West Germany had Beckanbeur ( and Connelly in his all to brief career was the only player who could properly compare.

Great posts Chris, OaB. I have his book so i think i will give it another read this week. I know its a rumours page but it would be fantastic if we could have a day every week where some of you older gents could post some stories regarding older players or just stories in general from supporting Celtic. Would love it if Celtic brought out a book based on fans stories from throughout our history. I don't think any fan regardless of age doesn't enjoy a good read about these kind of things. Have you gents read Dan Doyle - Life and death of a Wild Rover? Its a favourite of mine what a character.

I have been banging the drum for James Forrest to win player of the year most the season as I think he has had a great season.
But as I read Scott brown talk about I realised over last month or so I have been changing my mind. The way Brown has been dragging us through some games has been fantastic.
He has become more than just a player.
He has grown into a great captain.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

07 Apr 2018 10:34:39
Broonie for me Kev. Consistency the key. Forrest has had a very good season but if he doesn't play there is others to step in. When Broonie doesn't play it's very noticable. Would be a great end to his Testimonial year to be named player of the year.

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I don't understand the calls for Forrest to even be considered for POTY, he had a good first half of the season but since the winter break he's slipped back into his old ways and he hasn't scored a league goal since Boxing Day.
If it's not Brown then it has to be KT for the level of consistency he's shown in playing so many games.}

07 Apr 2018 10:44:30
Got to be broony for me kev, nobody else comes close! Forrest has done well, but it’s his usual first part of the season and back to the same frustrating Forrest since January! Seen a quote from big Sutton online were he said, there would be a good chance the league would be so much closer if it wasn’t for broony! I couldn’t agree more honestly! If the whole team had his fight and desire for every game fhe league would be won already! So it’s got to be the captain for me, and if it’s anyone else it will purely be down to the fact that broony is disliked by most people outside our club!

Agree1 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 10:58:05
Agree with that Ed, Lh86. To be considered you have to be on it consistently. Too be honest as long as he is named player of the year by the club i will be happy, not interested in who other clubs players or writers choose they have no love for our club so who cares about their opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I'd be very surprised if Brown won the PFA award and I'd imagine so would he.}

07 Apr 2018 11:12:30
Doing the Broonie after collecting it o/.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 11:15:31
I think people are being a bit unfair on Forrest myself. He was fantastic first half season and the the second half he's been ok.
But I have been impressed with his work rate off the ball and defensively tae which he has never really excelled at. But Brown just seems stepped it up to a new level again. When the chips are down he really comes into his game.

Agree1 Disagree1

07 Apr 2018 11:27:09
Brown and KT have been there week after week from day one, rarely putting a foot wrong, breaking up opposing attacks and setting up and supporting the forward players, covering every blade of grass home and away. Forrest has had a good season by his standards, but still goes missing too many times and very rarely maintains his best form for three games in a row and his goals have dried up yet again after the turn of the year.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Apr 2018 11:33:49
In fairness to Forrest we have to remember no one has really held down the RB position this season due to injuries and change of formation so he never really gets more than a game or 2 to work out some kind of understanding with the full back. Of course he should be able to play regardless but it must still have an affect in his game.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Apart from the 42 games in which him and Lustig have played in together.}

07 Apr 2018 11:47:23
Is that how many times they have played together this season Ed!? Jeezo would never have thought that. Goes to show how many games we have played this season with Gamboa, Ralston, Hendry, Ajer, Boyata all having played there at some point over the season in a back 3 or 4.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Lustig's played 42 games and Forrest's played 51 so I just took it from that, Stan. It'll be there or there abouts.}

07 Apr 2018 13:09:40
forrest has been crap for months now.

Agree3 Disagree1

07 Apr 2018 21:57:30
I think that Brendan sets up the team to attack most on the left hand side with K T and S S often backed up and supported by Armstrong .
I believe Lustig is instructed to not drive foreward as much as K T on attack . This leaves Forrest often starting off on ball further from opponents goal .
It also means that our centre defenders can carry ball out of defence and know they have some cover behind .

It's great we have so many home produced players Tierney, Forrest and McGregor all three current Internationals and all thee should be supported and encouraged by Celtic supporters.
