Max Lowe who was on loan at Aberdeen a couple of seasons ago has just signed for Sheffield Utd . I always thought he looked decent when he was up there, could have been a good option when kt left . Prob would have got him for a lot cheaper than utd have just paid.

I'm sure he'll be on silly money but I've just seen that Wolves have signed 31yr old Brazilian LB, Marcal, from Lyon for 2M Euros.

Thoughts on Callum O'Dowda right winger for ROI. Thought he looks like he could be a special player and would give Forest competition. Playing for Bristol City but can see him progress past them in the year ahead.

I know . not another project but will be watching him today again running fearlessly at defenders. He's a player.

I think it may be better taking up his Grand- father’s career as singing . I thought he had an impressive first half last Thursday night but had a poor second half and was quiet enough to day . But then the whole team disappointed .
I think our new manager needs a very hard working performance and he didn’t have the fitness in the team to match it.

He's not up to it, 25 years old and still to break through.
Final ball is beyond poor and assist rate is questionable on top of a god awful goal scoring rate.

My HOI, not what we need and nowhere near good enough.

A report today suggesting Leeds Utd are close to signing Josko Gvardiol for 18M which could mean Barry Douglas was surplus to requirements. Any thoughts on Barry competing for our LB/ LWB position?

Can't say I know much about him but given his age the fee would need to be in the low side to make it worthwhile. Could be a good opportunity for Taylor to act as an understudy and improve his game over a season or two.

It would be good for Celtic to have someone who can put in dangerous deliveries from both open play and set pieces.
I think that’s what Douglas would bring.

Agreed, I seem to remember we were linked with Barry Douglas before he went to Poland. He can get up and down the park no bother and has plenty of experience - could be an option on the left side.

Hi Ed, hope you're keeping well? Do you have any idea what's going on with the Afolabi that we signed from Southampton? Thought he might have featured in some of the preseason games or is he not ready or rated?

Cheers.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Jonathan Afolabi spent the second half of the season on loan out at Dunfermline but that was obviously cut short by Covid. I expect him to go back out on loan as he is at that stage - like a lot of our youngsters - that he needs to be playing regular football for his development to continue.}

Ah right cool, remember his signing being greeted with a bit of fanfare so thought he must've been thought of highly.

When he was at Dunfermline Stevie Crawford commented on how well he lead the line. He's a bit like Eddie cutting in from the left and uses his strength to get by defenders. He's got a good attitude, a bit like Cameron Harper, when he says he wants to learn and play at the highest level. Issue is everyone says that and the hard work is all in front of him.

Morning Ed, reading some reports edouards willing to sign a new deal if there's certain clauses inserted in it for example a release fee. what's your take on edouards situation, do you think he'll sign a new deal and stay especially for this season or do you think there's a real possibility he could leave before October 5th?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - A release clause is only binding when both the selling and buying club are in the same country so unless Aberdeen find £40 million down the back of the sofa or TRIFC use their Morelos Millions (no laughing at the back there) to buy Edouard it would be pointless having one. The longer it goes on without Edouard signing a new deal the more I'm worried that he won't be here when the window closes.

Buy-Out Clauses Explained:

This is a horribly complex area not least because they are written under individual national laws. They cause a great deal of misunderstanding with football supporters and the media alike.

The "buy out clause" is legally binding between a club and a player. The "buy out" is effectively what it says - a means for the player to buy himself out of the contract. As an example, if a player wishes to buy himself out of a contract, he pays the applicable FA (on behalf of the club) the amount of the "buy out" clause effectively becoming a free agent. The problem is that in most cases a player would need to obtain that money from the buying club - and this is fraught with issues regarding "tapping up" and, of course, taxation (as it can be seen as income for the player and would therefore be subject to income tax). There was a test case about the taxation issue in Spain about five years ago which is why they have an exception. All players in Spain and Portugal have a release clause that allows the player to buy himself out of his contract without tax implications. This was to address a ruling from around 30 years ago allowing players a way out of their contracts. It works differently in Iberia to elsewhere as the tax implications do not make such clauses viable. All players in Iberia must have a figure set and agreed with the club. So "buy out" clauses are very rare. Related to this is the Webster Ruling but I don't intend to go in to that now.

A "release clause" is far more common in that it gives a figure that the club would accept for the sale of a player to another club - but it is not legally binding except where both parties (clubs) are in the same country (for the sake of argument I should say that football Spain and Portugal count as the same country as do England and Wales) for legal purposes. These are normally unreasonably high figures (Messi at Barcelona for example) introduced to act as a deterrent for hostile bids - and even then the club could easily block a move. However, if a club in the same country does agree to match a release clause then the selling club would be obliged to ask the player if he is interested - there is no obligation on the player to make a move. For interested clubs outside of the country, the selling club may use it as a guide but are under obligation to accept a bid and may demand a higher figure. The other notable point about Spain and Portugal is that the clauses if invoked by a non Iberian club need to be paid in full by the player (there are local rules that stop tax being due) but by needing to put up 100% of the money upfront would end many transfers then and there.

There is then the becoming popular "termination clause" which is binding between the player and the club and if met would see an offer from anywhere accepted and the player given the opportunity to make a call on a move. This overcomes the issues associated with "buy out" clauses as the money would be paid by one club to another and about the legal proximity of the buying side.}

Every day I see speculation about Eddy being 'wanted' by clubs and although I have not heard of any concrete bids, it is reported that Aston Villa, Leicester and Arsenal 'are watching the situation closely' and that doesn't include any European clubs that must be aware of his ability. I also worry that there is still almost a full month left of the window and some high profile transfer will leave a club desperate to land a striker at the eleventh hour?
