Balotelli, Messi, Bojan, Neymar, El Sharraway, Iniesta, Robhinio . Just some of the top players who will taste the atmosphere in the coming months at Parkhead . Even AC Milan are calling it " The Group of Nobility " . The only group made up of ex champions . I know it would have been nice to have a group consisting of teams we aren't too familiar with but let's just savour the thought of 3 of the greatest European teams ever gracing our magnificent stadium . DH {Ed007's Note - I would say Ajax can also be classed as one of Europe's great clubs as well DH.}

Once again, Celtic welcomed at the big table with opened arms with former winners of the big cup!

Maybe there can be a competition for clubs who have been liquidated and start all over again as a brand new club! Hmmmm sounds a bit like the Ramsden cup! No disrespect to the other clubs who have history and got by on a shoestring budget!

Right what I am going to say might sound totally crazy and even writing this I can't see this every happening! But just Read Kaka is keen to move on from Real Madrid he knows his game time will be limited this season and has been told he can leave his agent who is his dad is searching for a new club for him, at 31 he is looking for one last challenge, ok ok I know he is prob on about £200,000 grand a week but surely he isn't looking to move for the money we could maybe offer him a 3 year contract at say £80,000 a week big Desmond could pick up half of that! He owes Lennon a big marquee signing and they wouldn't come much bigger than that!
we can but dream
but before you all jump on my back and call me a clown I know this won't happen I would just love the board to show some major ambition! {Ed007's Note - A lot of Kaka's money goes into his church and charity. In saying that, he won't be dipping the collection box this Sunday.}

Absolutely delighted 2 b back in the champions league again this season proud of the bhoys wasnt an easy job 2 do under so much pressure considering what was on the line.

Although we tend 2 target players who fall into a certain category (young, sell on fee). What do you think about gallas ed? If the deal for ciani doesn't materialise do u think he would be worth a punt? Experienced player who could bring a lot to the younger bhoys. Obviously not a long term solution but surely worth giving a chance to help us in the group stages?

Hi guys. What a night last night. Unbelievable way to finish the tie. Neil Lennon is a great wee general. All the media in Scotland were waiting hard for him to slip up so they could stick the knifes in. He was under huge pressure and got no help from the board. I hope the board give him the backing he deserves. Like to see 3 quality players in. It was a great night enjoy folks. Ps Ed I hope your keeping well. HH Bigirishmac {Ed007's Note - Hi BIM. I'm fine thanks for asking, I hope you are well too. Sorry it took so long to answer I have been very busy elsewhere all day.}

Ha ha that's why a love the beautifull game!
Last week, we were mince against against the Kazakhs (true)
Some fans: heads were to roll
Other fans: we can turn this round easy
The board should have done more even before that game (that was me)

Last night before kick off, a goal in the first half we should make it through, infact. We don't care how it pans out as long as we make it through to the BIG Bhoys party, we just want to make it to the groups :)
And that's how it went and we done it.

Now. As per. We get the moaners about the group we are in (brilliant ha ha) I didn't want Barca as most would agree?
BUT that is some feckin group, I don't always look down the history route, but that is almost possibly the biggest and best group history/stature/prestige/fanbase wise you could hand pick!
Worst case, we finish last on 0points
Ideally, grab a few point along the way and finish 3rd
Or (punch above our weight) this could be one of the tightest groups where 1st and 2nd could qualify on 8/9 points which could play into our hands (wishing).
Now I'm as honest as they come others will call it negative or pessimistic (especially if it was Al Geri posting this, that guy gets it tight lol) but I'm really looking forward to this group panning out!
We are Celtic, "This is OUR city and THESE are our coulors"
(Supporters were a credit to the club again last night, love it)
BRING IT ON!

Bigbadjohn

Believable0 Unbelievable0

BBJ was thinking the same. 9 points could most certainly get you second. All four teams have the ability to win all three home games and all three will be tough to beat on the road. If we can manage 7 points at home and a win or a couple of draws away than we'll be in with a big shout for last 16. I can't wait :)

Now that dust has settled I was looking at our squad and am quite happy. None of the new signings started last night so we have Balde, Van Dijk, Myoukolo and Boerighter all to play some part. I want to see the 2 Dutch players in particular. It also looks like Biton and Pukki will join. Heard good reports about the Israeli a strong holding midfielder and heard Pukki is a good team player with a strong work ethic.
It will also enable players like Forrest and Ledley to recover from their injuries and Kayal.
I believe we are stronger than last season and although a mighty tough group, confident we can at least go down to Europa League at worst. Timalloy

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't think we are stronger Timalloy,
Not far away considering who we've lost. Agree with everything else you say though, big Virgil will be class, especially in SPFL, Boeriggter will be class in all completions. The other 2 don't get a mention for me.
Biton and Pukki have a lot to live up to but by the looks of it are slightly different types Of players who the could be replacing so will also need time especially Pukki if he's going to be the main goal getter?
3rd in the groups is achievable.

Bigbadjohn

Agree0 Disagree0

It will take an almighty effort by the players, board, lenny and us the fans. Last night proved how important all of you are to the team. I think we can get 3rd from this group. Don't let the press turn us aganist our team. Europa cup final sounds amazing along with that money from the group stages. We sign the right players here and we have a real chance of having a very special season.

With all the managerial changes down south it is inevitable that a good few players will be unsettled or surplus to requirement.
I am not normally in favour of loan deals, but it might be worth a look to help fill the gaps in the squad?
I know a few have been calling for a commanding experienced centre half, but I think if we had a goalie who commanded his area, organised the defence and came confidently for crosses we would be a lot less panicky and exposed by most opponents?

Cannot believe some of the negative posts about our CL draw, Barca, AC Milan and Ajax.
No nightmare travelling, no plastic pitches and probably 3 full houses at Celtic Park and 5,000 fans supporting us away at all 3 venues.
Look across the city all their fans have to look forward to is he pawnbrokers cup and what is happening in Eastenders.
Celtic will make millions and we fans have 3 glamorous ties at home to go to.

Tough group but I don't doubt for a second Ajax will feel the same. They had an extremely tough group last year and gave a great account of themselves- let's just hope AVB nicks Erikson before the deadline.

Despite the obvious difficulty in such a group, people seem to forget that a group like this is actually more evenly poised as there's a good chance teams will take points off each other.

Everything to play for- and if nothing else, we're back at the big table.

Hopefully having all these glamour ties in the Champions League will improve our chances even more of attracting Bigger and Better players. Even with Biton And Pukki coming Celtic still need a commanding centre half, a creative midfielder and another striker. With a few good signings we can challenge Milan for 2nd place. Both Milan And Ajax are no where near the world class force in European football they used to be. DundeeMichael.

MIXED EMOTIONS FOR LENNON

Celtic manager Neil Lennon on their group of Barcelona, AC Milan and Ajax: "I think it's the best and the worst draw we could have got!

"In terms of glamour it doesn't come any better but it's the most difficult we could have got. There's a lot of excitement. The hard work was done last night and we can enjoy it now. In terms of travelling for supporters it's great.

"Three great footballing arenas with fantastic pedigree. Locking horns again with Barcelona, there's so much to savour. It's going to be extremely difficult.

"In terms of attracting players, the quality players we are looking for, it's been a really difficult summer. We are in the Champions League again though and it adds to the reputation of the club."

More from Celtic boss Neil Lennon: "The financial side of it is a huge benefit for the club. This makes us stable for the next three or four years now. Can we move on and develop?"

Don't think it could have been tougher and most outside Celtic will be writing us off before a ball is kicked and that is a good position to be in as the pressure is now off.

I think they should take the word 'draw' out of the group selection process as it's more a 'cunning plan'.
By the time you have this team not being able to play that team and so many selected teams having to go into set groups you get left with a manipulated set of fixtures with very familiar patterns.
Anyway the SLY mob (Jamie Redknap apart)are having the same sniggering reaction as last year and that suits us fine; we have nothing to lose, a guaranteed income, a test against the very best and more fantastic Euro nights to savour.

LISBON LION
Celtic legend Billy McNeill comes out with the trophy that today's 32 teams will be dreaming of.

The 73-year-old helped the Hoops become the first British team to win the European Cup in 1967, beating Inter Milan in the final.

This season's final is in Lisbon, the same city that Celtic won the cup in.

It's great to be in the pot today. But wrongful we're in the fourth pot. A great pull back last night but we still only took three chances from about 14. We need to drastically improve those stats in group stages. You only get two or three chances in a game and have to take them.
Lenny and the squad deserved fierce criticism after the first leg and of course the praise now. It's how it works.
I'm sure the criticism helped motivate the result last night.
Truth is it should never have become so risky and in the end we only scored three from 14 chances.

Guys go to BBCsport/football. There is a very informative if somewhat confusing explanation of how the co-efficient points work for the CL & EL. After reading this it really brings it home how corrupt the whole thing is and the fact that our team has even made it to the group stages brings home just how well we've done. Unfortunately it's not going to change and the only thing that will realistically help is other Scottish teams doing their part but that's not going to happen is it?
However I don't feel we have to settle for mediocrity and lack of ambition. let's be realistic, we are never going to win this competion again but we are in a very sound financial position and luckily able to bring in some talent. If PL loosens the purse strings just a little and backs NL the players he acquires will get CL experience this year and be bedded in for next years assault and if you read the mentioned article this can only help us move from pot 4 to 3 therefor making the draw slightly more favourable.
Hail hail

Believable0 Unbelievable0

There shouldn't be any country coefficient points at all. It is a club competition. There can be a seeding system like tennis. Based on immediate past performance of each club. That's the only fair way.
In no way should television viewing figures have anything to do with seeding club sides. That's a corruption of the sport right there. It wouldn't stand up to judicial review.

Agree0 Disagree0

IMO, the clue is in the name, Champions League. All champions regardless of country should qualify then play offs should take place for the remaining places. Never happen though :-(

Superb result fine display good noisy crowd.
1. Why can't we live up to that kind of noise in our stadium week in week out even whilst playing in SPL the supporters sounded as though they were really enjoying themselves so why not keep it up.
2. There was a post I suspected to be made up the other day about bring a sell out a full stadium. It wasn't and the top tier of one of the stands had a massive banner stretched across it. We can't fill a stadium these days even in important CL match thank god for season ticket sales.

The fact that our nfirst choice right-back was playing centre half last night tells us one thing - Kelvin Wilson has (as most of us realise) not been replaced. Mikael did well, but any team with serious CL aspirations needs a top quality, experienced centre half. Virgil and Steven Mouyokolo have replaced (and improved on) Rogne and Gershon, but our first pick starting CB now needs to be replaced urgently, before Saturday night.

Anything else represents an acceptance of mediocrity and a failure to support our manager. 30M in the bank - please spend 3M of that on a quality, experienced, physically dominant stopper CB.

We know we need a striker as well, but 'Defense wins championships'.

back the Manager please Peter. Give him the tools he needs.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm inclined to agree Fitzy. His stats are not great and I've said that all along. Too many fans seem happy to get a player for the sake of it without looking at the quality. Is he any better than Stokes, Watt, Atajic etc? I really don't know if he is.

MikeyBhoy88

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Realistic targets I would like to see us go for:
Neil Taylor - Left back from Swansea
Sol Bamba - Centre half from Trabzonspor
Any 2 of these 3 for Centre forward - Pukki, Guidetti or Finboganson.
This lot would cost less than 9 mil, wouldn't be fussed if we has to loan to buy of some of them (Taylor or Guidetti). If rumours are to be belived and Stokes is off to West Brom I think this would generate 2-3M reducing our net spend. Ross McCormack would not be a bad shout to replace Stokes either.
I would loan out Tony Watt also, Aberdeen or Motherwell would be a good platform for him to show what he can do in th SPFL.

Don't think I'll ever understand this co-efficient rating for CL groups as we were in pot 3 last season and did better than teams ranked above us this season?
An example is Man City who have no recent CL form or success in recent years but hey we are in the diddy pot and it doesn't matter who we draw - they will all be tough opponents. I hope we avoid Russian/Ukrainian teams for the travelling, weather and artificial pitches.
I agree with NL how much of an achievement this was for Celtic to qualify and I think he had a wee dig at the board regarding losing three key players making it such an uphill task so early in our season.
What a difference waking up this morning, compared to last Wednesday and a huge thanks and congratulations to all at the club for giving us top class football again at Celtic Park through the winter.
We know where we need to strengthen and a few players are yet to get back to top form; but that performance and result will boost confidence no end.
OK Karagandy were ordinary, but we rectified a poor result and performance with another CL Cracker!
We have had some injury problems and a transition of players and we are not even in September yet so with the pressure of qualification removed from the manager and players let's hope the board sanction an injection of class - as NL stated 'to help those guys in the dressing room' that gave us all such a lift.

The 'Big Carrot' has finally arrived, so I hope we get a couple of real game changing entertainers before Saturday. The SFA have not helped Scottish football by closing our 'Transfer Window' 48 hours early, but I reckon we would have had a couple pending CL qual.

Well done Bhoys last night now to dreaming who we want. My ideal group would be

Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Manchester City, CELTIC

No big journeys and NO blooming plastic pitches.
Also with all 3 commanding big tv audiences and playing in so called bigger leagues, any points we earn will be more in coefficient table.
But if we sign Pukki what is betting we land Schalke? Timalloy

Predictions for champ league draw

Dream draw for me
Benfica, CSKAMoscow, Basel

Worst draw
Bayern Munich, PSG, Man City

What we will prob get
Man United, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund

Any thoughts or predictions?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We don't want benfica (or any team like that from Pot 1.) We want bayern or real madrid, as they should canter to first place and not drop points to our rivals. We can then dog it out for 2nd or 3rd place. It is very naive to hope for an 'easy' pot 1 team - to give us our best chance we want someone who will run away with the group. (Like Barca did). Jean-Pierre Laguerre

Agree0 Disagree0

I would rather have them then than arsenal , too often big team put out 2nd string teams once they have qualified and end up being beaten by the lesser teams.
I only picked benfica as we can beat them and have in the past, plus there's a bigger chance of us topping the group(heres hoping) with the likes of benfica.
The way matches are the ones we need to up our game on(not every game is almost barca esq

A few weeks go I posted on this site. Basically I questioned whether Anthony Stokes deserved another contract. (Ed I'm sure you followed this up with a poll on the subject.

Basically my thoughts were he didn't as I considered him to be lacking in many areas. However I thought Stokes last night was truly excellent. Aside from his slalom run in the box to create the winner I thought he played with great maturity, strength, guile and determination throughout.

So you guys gather the rotten fruit and I'll go lock myself in the stocks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I got pelters for defending stokes on that thread. Glad people are finally seeing the light. West brom are in for stoksy now though and after all the rubbish thrown his way I wouldn't blame him for leaving. I hope he doesn't but he deserves better.

Hello fellow tims great result last night glad to be back amongst the big boys but one worry I have is this guy pukki we seem to be buying (supposedly just agreeing terms), a guy used to go to school with moved to Germany in 2009 to study in gelsinkirchen he is a celtic supporter and comes to a lot of games he also watches schalke on odd occasion he said pukki is just like stokes very greedy and not the best of finishers more of an ATtacking mid can play a good pass I think we're going for the wrong guy hopefully I'm wrong what's your opinion folks

KBarry I would like to appologise for the abuse I gave you back regarding George. I thought from his posts a decent guy trying to fight for his team. great result last night, was jumping for hrs, thought i'd pitch in on the james forrest debate, firstly yes he has been playing gash lately but I have nothing but respect for the boy if he has been playing with sciatica, which is a trapped nerve in the base of your back, I suffer sciatica and some days can hardly move, before people jump in and say he should rest until its gone cured etc that would be wrong as any quack will tell you to keep active to loosen, untrap etc, the feeling you get with sciatica is a constant pain from your lower back shooting right down your leg, can't bend or move freely, even difficult do use the toilet. personally think some of the reaction to him is OTT, here we have a homegrown player who loves the club and at the end of the day scored the winner to get us thru to the champs league. I remember all the uproar about broony when he had his injury and he was playing gash but look at him now. if they get his sciatica problem resolved and he can play free off pain I think we shall see the difference. keep up the good work ed.bhoywonder

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Spot on re Forrest. I had it for a few years. It's like toothache in your hip and leg. He's doing really well to play at all. Fantastic night and some great performances. Only concerns really Forster and mulgrew, both seem to be lacking confidence .

I don't want to sound like a moaning fan but I wouldn't want a loan signing not that we would get lukaku anyways but let's buy our player the way I see it bring someone in on loan there class score loads of goals then go back to there parent club we have the void to fill again on the other hand if they do well and we have them on 4 -5 year contract we are going to make a profit. let's just get permanent signings in (Finnbogason) no loans

I have just spent the last hour or so reading the tabloids and you would think it is the end of the world Celtic FC going through to the group stage of the champions league. The Herald in particular state that it was a get out of jail night and their marks out of 10 with comments are a lot to be desired. For me tonight Efe Ambrose was fantastic and Commons was outstanding. Forrest, take away the goal was sub par to say the least and I am I am worried about Charlie, player of the year to ordinary. Over all I am so happy we made it to the group stages but need some new blood.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree with you about Forrest and Muglrew. Both are pretty awful, Mulgrew couldn't pass go in Monopoly, is it because he's being played in so many different positions?, he is a full back and an emergency centre back, nothing more or nothing less. Forrest needs to get his injury sorted and to work twice as hard as he does.

Agree0 Disagree0

Celtsm,

I agree, but if you think the Herald was bad, look at the Scotsman - a disgrace of a paper that never has a good word for our Club. Surprisingly, Keith Jackson's report in the Record is excellent (never thought I'd ever say that).

Just looking at the seeding pots for the CL draw and it is just not right. CHAMPIONS League - does that name itself not indicate something? Thanks to the sterling efforts of all our other Scottish teams playing in Europe - including the zombies - we (as Scottish Champions) had to play 3 bl**dy games to get into the pot. Just gets on my goat (or sheep!) rant over Ed- TinyTim

Pot 1: Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Arsenal, FC Porto, Benfica

Pot 2: Atletico Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, AC Milan, Schalke, Marseille, CSKA Moscow, Paris St-Germain, Juventus

Pot 3: Zenit St Petersburg, Manchester City, Ajax Amsterdam, Borussia Dortmund, FC Basel, Olympiakos, Galatasaray, Bayer Leverkusen

Pot 4: FC Copenhagen, Napoli, Anderlecht, Celtic, Steaua Bucharest, Viktoria Plzen, Real Sociedad, Austria Vienna

Frank (Sevco) Egan, Kilsyth, said: "Celtic's defence is the weakest link and even if they score a few goals against Shakhter they'll still ship a few at the back.

"I can almost hear Anne Robinson saying to Efe Ambrose and Co, 'You are the weakest link, goodbye'.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Pot one

EKBhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

It's worse. I think they are in pot 1. Dortmund in pot 3??

Whereas we moved from being ranked 63rd last year to 62nd this year despite reaching last 16.

I'm not saying Arsenal are a bad team, I don't think that. But they get easy draws then usually go out when they are against a decent side. So it has not been much of a challenge for them to progress to last 16 then ultimately go out.

The CHAMPIONS (felt like Al Geri there) League is so imbalanced in favour of the money leagues that our achievements should be better recognised.

db

Agree0 Disagree0

Even worse there in pot 1 but I don't care bout em I care bout the bhoys and its shocking how were in pot 4 after 3 qualifiers champs of league plus ex last 16 .its time these points systems got sorted out surely its against fair trade or whatever fancy gargin hail hail

Arsenal have 5 years in cl so ranking high.

we only have 2 years coefs. but may need only 2 pre-rounds next year, and make pot3 . when we have 5 years coefs may even get to pot 2

heading in right direction, more money, more cooefs, repairing damage by others

Well, well, well, I'm glad I did. It seems poor George is getting pelters from the peepul for his recent behaviour.
You've got to admire his passion though. I nearly cried reading some of the stuff he was belting out. Whether I was gushing tears of pain or tears of laughter has created a bit of a conundrum if I'm honest. One part of me is going with the pain vote, another part of me is going with the laughter option. Perhaps it was a heady cocktail of both, but it was entertaining reading for sure.
George, we salute you.

Well done to Lenny and the bhoys tonight, every man playing for the jersey.
Well done also to James Forrest on a composed finish, didn't have the best of games and still frustrates the life out of me but credit where its due, right place, right time, good finish.
Ambrose or Samaras for man of the match. Full backs were superb but Ambrose had their striker in his back pocket all night. He tracked runs well, was composed on the ball and hardly wasted a pass. He can also dribble out from the back gets us 20 or 30 yards up the pitch. As long as he keeps it simple he will be a good player for us this year. Samaras was on fire, he stetches teams with his pace and direct style and he will be our main man in Europe this year. Hoping for Real Madrid or Chelsea in the draw, confident we can take ANYONE at Parkhead.
Hail Hail and goodnight.
