I reckon Celtic need to bring in a strong, creative CM and a prolific young striker for the season ahead. We really need to invest well the money we have got from Wanyama and most likely Hooper and get someone who can make a real difference to our team. Aka not Doyle, but someone like Jordan Rhodes who also has sell on value.

what a cheek that fat Doncaster had on tv today saying we are delighted to announce new set up when himself and regan had applied the vacancy at the English football league surely the people in charge at this organisation must be ignorant of what has gone on up here with spivco why no mention of this in msm

So now it's drawing closer, I need to let go, Hooper was my man (and the wife's) the best since the king :)
Still got a feeling someone will come in a steal him from QPR, but anyways, he's away.
Now for the really important bit, I think we need 2 strikers, the one to replace Hooper needs to be the one as we know the other will be a cheap risk or loan!
I think Celtic must have struck a deal eleswhere for a new recruit before accepting the bid for Hooper, too big a risk going into the game on Wednesday, Rudvens is the one, anybody else that scores regular is welcome, anybody else that doesn't, prove us wrong but the board can't take that risk? Not with the income that's been generated.
The SPFL is a shoe in, I've heard we want to progress in the CL? Prove it!

Ed you hearing anything of note about any incoming players? Iv not got a good feeling about the Tunisian guy being mentioned but that could be just paper talk! {Ed007's Note - I don't like the sound of him either but sorry I've not heard anything about anyone else.}

Never thought I'd say this, but it looks like we've just sold one of our best strikers to Rangers!
Seriously though, good luck to the boy, but again, it just points out how dire Scottish football is at the moment. An English 1st division side (yes I know they call it the "championship", but in all essence, it's the first division) can offer 5 million of their parachute money for one player!
Gary's task for a move to QPR is simple. Get his head down and try for quick promotion or maybe get recognised and move to a bigger team in 2-3 years time. The flip side of that coin is not so rosy and has been seen many times before. Languish in a mediocre team, play mince and become a nonentity pretty quickly. I hope it's the former as I always like to see ex celts do well wherever they are playing their football
I agree with some of the posts earlier, it's not time to panic and rush out to buy an expensive dud, but time for our excellent back room boys to go out to the market and bag another Hooper. Also think you're spot on Mr Bond, raising the "weekly wage" would encourage better players to stay a while longer.
Looking forward to a new season, with hopefully a couple more new faces at the club. It is indeed a great time to be a Celtic supporter!
MTH!

looks like hopperman has gone good business although I would have taken the money in January I think he will score loads at qpr good luck to the boy in the future also has the honour of being the last goalscorer EVER in the now defunct OLD FIRM match

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lets hope he agrees terms and leaves with our best wishes for a job well done.If he tries to sit it out a lot of fans will turn on him.I get the feeling he would rather go to Norwich to play in the prem.The championship will be no cakewalk for QPR. green jhedi

My mate is Gary Mackay Stevens cousin and he said GMS is dying for a move to Celtic {Ed007's Note - He's no use to us dead.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lenny said yesterday, a forward, a midfielder, somebody at left back as izzy gets tired, and a left sided player ( Mackay-Stevens is left sided player).

Agree0 Disagree0

Mackay-Stevens is a really cheap option to please fans. So expect pl to do it.

Miku was our CL expensive gamble last summer. It didn't pay off. Expect something similar. A marque striker on a one year loan. It makes sense.

I really hope we bring in 2 or 3 quality additions with the money available from Wanyama and Hooper?
We cannot be too complacent going into the Elfsborgs game as they are up to speed and obviously playing well with that 11-1 aggregate win.
The importance of being in the CL group stage every season must be our priority and penny pinching or resting on our laurels is far too risky.
The board have got to back the manger to the hilt in return for his success he and having a talented and entertaining team on the park will fill the stadium and attract sponsors and other revenue.
Our reputation in Europe is again very healthy and we must continue to carry the torch for Celtic - and Scotland because nobody else can at present.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree 100% JJ . The money we took in for CL last year not counting TV rights, hospitality and ST books should tide us over nicely . The transfer money we got for Wanyama and should be getting for Hooper and maybe even Wilson should be used for transfer fees and wages . I don't mean to spend recklessly but to invest sensibly . Don't know much about the two guys rumoured but when Tunisian or Moroccan players get mentioned it always sets my alam bells ringing . It's to do with when they play Internationals and are away for weeks on end sometimes . My own preference would be to try for players nearer home . I would like Celtic to make enquiries for Rhodes, Bridcutt and Sebastian Larsson . Just test the water and ask . I remember Alex Ferguson doing the same with Cantona when he was at Leeds and got him for a song . Why shop at Lidl when you've got the money to shop at Marks . I don't want us to be running around at last minute and being left with the Lassads and Miku, s and Kamaras of this world . We as Celtic fans deserve the best because no matter what anybody says we are the best . Oh and a competitive left back would be appreciated as well . DH

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jul 2013 20:07:19
Wish people would stop mentioning Rhodes
On here, if it was 8m Blackburn signed him
For performance related, he banged
The goals in last season in a poor Blackburn
Team so why would they sell for any less
Than 8m. And we won't be spending 8m certainly
On 1 player {Ed007's Note - I wish people would understand that Blackburn didn't pay £8 million for Rhodes.}

Agree0 Disagree0

@DH: I think Ferguson was actually offered by Howard Wilkinson, Bond will know i'm sure. I agree with the nationalities thing though. I got a strange feeling we might have something up our sleeves here. green jhedi {Ed007's Note - Wilkinson and Cantona never really seen eye to eye and had numerous fall-outs so when Alex Ferguson rang up Wilkinson to enquire whether he would listen to offers for Lee Chapman. Wilkinson said no, but told Ferguson that Cantona might be available. A ludicrously low fee of £1.2 million was agreed and the rest is history.}

Agree0 Disagree0

@2 Did you read what I said? . I said enquire . That's all . It doesn't cost a penny to ask about a player . DH

Agree0 Disagree0

ED007: Thanks mate I knew there was a back story to that transfer. got to be up there with us signing Henke as one of the great bargains. One of my favourite clips is when Cantona chipped a keeper from twenty yards and just turned and looked like a Roman General! Classic. green jhedi {Ed007's Note - It was against Sunderland, he scored a similar goal against Sheffield United as well. He was a wonderful player, but he never really got the plaudits he deserved from his peers. }

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed007

Sorry to contradict you, but the Cantona to Utd transfer didn't happen exactly as you say. Ferguson was sitting in Martin Edward's office when Leeds phoned enquiring about Dennis Irwin. Ferguson told Edwards to say that Irwin was not for sale but if they were thinking of selling Cantona, he'd be interested. The deal was done and dusted within the week. You're right in saying that Wilkinson couldn't handle a player like Cantona (like all the other managers before him) and it's testament to Ferguson's man-management skills that he was able to get the best out of him. I can never imagine Ferguson going in for Lee Chapman - an absolute donkey who, for one season only, managed to sclaff a huge amount of goals in off his shin, arse and top of his head to help Leeds win the title in 91/92.

TomTheTim {Ed007's Note - I've heard that before as well Tom. I think it just depends which book (version) you believe. Most Utd books have that version (Fergie and his great spur of the moment decision that really started the revolution) and Leeds tend to use mine. (Just incase you think I'm BSing you, have a read here:

www.mightyleeds.co.uk/players/cantona2.htm

Ferguson wanted Chapman to replace Dion Dublin who had broke his leg and he had heard Chapman wanted out of Leeds because Cantona was allegedly having an affair with his wife, Leslie Ash. He had also made enquiries about Brian Deane and David Hirst to replace Dublin.}

Agree0 Disagree0

@ ED007

No worries ED - in the words of the great Aneurin Bevan "This is my truth, tell me yours". Fergie is a great ranconteur and probably not adverse to embellishing his stories. I've not heard that version of events before so it's interesting from a historical viewpoint - what would have happened if Utd had signed Chapman instead of Cantona?

TomTheTim {Ed007's Note - I don't think AF would have been at Utd for the length of time he was. Chapman was awful and Cantona made all the difference to Utd.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Absolutely, Ed, Cantona was the missing piece of the jigsaw, who turned the also-rans of 91/92 into the runaway winners of 92/93. You could see how much he was missed when he was banned in 94/95.

Hi Guys, A possible replacement I think for Hooper could be the Genk striker Jelle Vossen. Unfortunately he has never been linked with Celtic from what I can remember but his scoring record is excellent and he fits the bill in my opinion. I have no idea how much he would cost but I doubt Genk would demand huge transfer fees. What you think guys?

Ed007 this made me laugh and thought I would share it.

A married couple is travelling by car from Victoria to Prince George .
Being seniors, after almost eleven hours on the road, they were too tired to continue and decided to take a room. But, they only planned to sleep for four hours and then. get back on the road.

When they checked out four hours later, the desk clerk handed them a bill for $350.00.

The man explodes and demands to know why the charge is so high. He told the clerk although it's a nice hotel; the rooms certainly aren't worth $350.00 for four hours. Then the clerk tells him that $350.00 is the 'standard rate'. He insisted on speaking to the Manager.

The Manager appears, listens to him, and then explains that the hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference centre that were available for us to use.

"But we didn't use them, " the husband said.

"Well, they are here, and you could have, " explained the Manager.

The Manager went on to explain that the couple could also have taken in one of the shows for which the hotel is famous. "We have the best entertainers from New York, Hollywood, and Las Vegas perform here, " the Manager says.

"But we didn't go to any of those shows, " the husband said.

"Well, we have them, and you could have, " the Manager replied.

No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, the husband replied, "But we didn't use it!"

The Manager is unmoved, and eventually the husband gave up and agreed topay. As he didn't have the check book, he asked his wife to write the check.
She did and gave it to the Manager.

The Manager is surprised when he looks at the check. "But ma'am, this is made out for only $50.00."

"That's correct. I charged you $300.00 for sleeping with me, " she replied.

"But I didn't!" exclaims the Manager.

"Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have."

Don't mess with senior citizens. They didn't get there by being stupid.

See Andrea Pirlo says that it's a disgrace celtic have to play qualifiers for the champions league, good to see a world class legend like him has taken a soft spot for Celtic. Maybe publicity like this will open uefas corrupt eyes. I find it insane that team 4th in England only plays one leg of qualifiers, yet we got to the same round as any other English side in the champions league last season. Money talks but champions league is for champions and you have teams like arsenal who haven't won a trophy in like 9 years, think about how much the group stage revenue would help champions from small countries to survive and to improve, it's like uefa doesn't want teams from small countries to prosper. Gandalf the green.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sadly UEFA are not interested in small teams prospering.The Champions league is driven by income.To get maximum revenue they need the big viewing figures from large countries.To tell you the truth I am a bit sick of it.I tend not to watch till the semi finals whereas before it was all the games.While we play in this country, with this financial set up, we will never do anything really significant in it. green jhedi

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree it is very poor that Celtic have to qualify at all, let alone three rounds.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's a ridiculous situation - the CL is a club competition, so why is the points system based on the national co-efficient? Celtic should be judged on their own performances in Europe, not on those of other clubs. We have had a decent run over the last decade - final of the UEFA Cup under MoN, last 16 of the CL under both GS and NL. Compared with arrivistes like Man City we should be straight into the group stage with a record like that.

Ed007, what is the situation at Celtic with Tony Watt, do you know? He lives not far from me and I have been in his company once or twice on nights out through mutual friends. Just interested to know how Celtic view him and his future? He seems to have stalled a bit since the Barcelona goal and his new contract. Interestingly, when he got his new deal he was only to happy to inform everyone how much he was earning! Has the money perhaps gone to his head? {Ed007's Note - He seemingly needed to be taken down a peg or two, that's where the stories of him going out on loan originated from.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Seems to fit in with what I have seen/heard then. {Ed007's Note - I'm hoping that he will get his head down and realise he still has a long way to go before he becomes a 'star' player. The raw talent is definitely there, it's just a case of if he will allow others to help him become the player he should become. I'm old fashioned that way GRD, if I was a manager I would have set rules for players under 21, including:

- You must wear black boots, even if you have a boot deal.
- No tattoos.
- No gambling.
- Your car must not cost over say £20k.
- Ongoing courses on handling the media and social media.
- One afternoon a week spent doing charity/voluntary work.

Agree0 Disagree0

Undoubtedly a talented player. I'm from Airdrie and he's from Coatbridge, he has had a reputation around the Lanarkshire area since he was a young kid. I agree he definitely needs to screw the head and allow himself the best chance of building on the start he had. If he doesn't then in some ways the Barca goal could end up being the worst thing that could have happened imo as stardom came instantly with that. I know after he got his new deal he was very open about how much he makes and was spending a lot of time in the bookies or driving around in his new mercedes. He also literally flashed the cash a few times in nightclubs to get the people's attention. From what I hear, he is big on buying the drinks on team nights out, even for Brown etc who are on 20k+ probably lol.

I hope for his sake and for the sake of Scottish football that he doesn't end up like John Fleck (who was super talented as well but let it waste him).

Interesting points about under 21's also Ed, I do agree, they get it far too easy these days. They should still be cleaning the senior players boots if you ask me! It didn't do people like Beckham, Scholes, Giggs etc any harm and they are far bigger stars than anyone Scotland will likely ever produce. I understand money has changed football even at youth level, but the extra responsibilities wouldn't do them any harm. {Ed007's Note - I can remember years ago watching Billy McNeill getting interviewed on the CP pitch, you could see a wee ginger headed guy sweeping up in the main stand, turned out it was Tommy Burns. If you asked a young player to do that today he would be straight on the phone to his agent or the Player's Union.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I remember hearing when John Fleck was just starting to make a name for himself at Rangers, Ally McCoist asked him to collect the balls or the cones or something at training and he told Ally to "go f*%k himself." After 500 senior games at the highest level that would be unacceptable, after a handful it is down right embarrassing.

Exactly and what a great example when you consider how much of an icon Tommy Burns went on to become. The difference is, if Tommy were still here today he would probably be happy to sweep up at Celtic Park even now. True Celtic man was Mr Burns and a true gentleman into the bargain.

DAVID TEMPLETON last night insisted Rangers aren’t scared of drawing Celtic in a cup this season.

Well David you will have to get passed the prelims first and we all know Ally struggles in the cups so can't see you playing Celtic any time soon.

Ian

Templeton's comment is the only thing that will make him a legend on the other side of the city, dropping three divisions tells you all you need to know about his ambition!

A lot of us (myself included) appear to be a little bit frustrated at the lack of action by Celtic on the transfer market. I suppose we feel there is a little bit of urgency because of the possible departure of Hooper and the important CL games coming up. However, when you look at the transfer market as a whole you'll see that there isn't really a lot of quality activity by any club, is there?
Perhaps we should be a little bit more tolerant (myself included again!) and trust that Lenny & Co. are doing whatever they need to.

Hail Hail
ChrisBhoy

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I reiterate chrisbhoy we need a proven striker who can score goals against group stage opposition- proven in CL group stages.
I don't think an English third tier Wolves guy is the answer, even if he's an Irish internationalist. We should be looking at improving on last year and improving on hooper. If hooper is £5m we should be spending at least £6m to be able to score against Juve in last 16.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rubbish, Hooper cost us 2 million which means we don't need to blow 6 million on someone. Hooper proves you don't have to spend a fortune to get a good goal scorer. We will live within our means. 25k is our max wage aswell so getting in someone who complys with that demand is a lot harder if ypu just paid 6 million for him. I hope we use all this money to raise our wages a bit even just to 30k. But pl and lenny know better than me.

Darrenbhoy {Ed007's Note - I'm with you Darren, fans are far too hung up on transfer fees these days, it doesn't guarantee the player will be a success. I've said it a million times I would like to see the wage barrier raised and some of the money used to get our quality players on long term contracts.}
