Last night was hard to take and I doubt if there's a Celtic man out there not hurting today. Sundays final is the perfect opportunity to get back on track and I wouldn't be surprised if we took it out on Motherwell. I don't think the players will need any motivating.

I'm under no illusion regarding the gulf in class. In the main but not always you get what you pay for. But-we won't put 7 past Brechin and most agreed the gap between Celtic and Brechin is bigger than the gap between Celtic and PSG. So for me and I'm a massive Brendan fan who hopes he's here for years to come he has demonstrated (1) he can set up a team to attack anybody even last night we'd chances (2) he is tactically astute and can change a game when its not going to plan but (3) what he hasn't shown is that he can put out a team set up not to lose. Even the great Jock Stein had to do that on one occasion with the greatest Celtic team of all time. ☘️.

23 Nov 2017 19:26:20
I actually thought we where better last night than then home game psg have world class man for man apart from maybe there keeper before the game I would have took 4-1 the problem we have is to many individual errors.

23 Nov 2017 19:48:16
Spot on JFP. Brendan seems unable to set up a defensively minded team when facing obviously better opponents. I'm not sure why he sees this as such a no go but hopefully this will change. You can't lose if you don't concede. But there seems to be a lot of people on here who forget (or weren't born) the genuinely bad YEARS (not matches) . I was born in the mid seventies and growing with them winning 9 in a row was real embarrassment.

Agree4 Disagree3

23 Nov 2017 19:49:03
Agreed Gordo I think we were better last night but I think we're still better than 7-1. I'd have taken a 3-0 defeat but I think we seem to lack belief plus as I said I think Rodgers needs a reality check with respect to his purist approach. ☘️.

Agree2 Disagree2

23 Nov 2017 20:08:59
Agreed VT! I grew up watching Celtic win 9 in a row and thought as a wee laddie Celtic just always won the league! Think how hard I took their 9 in a row and their huddle at Celtic Park. God Bless Tommy Burns it took a greater toll on him. But I wouldn't swap ma Celtic top for all the EPL tops in the world. Brendan needs to wisen up though to the fact you need to fight the fight the way the odds suit you. ☘️.

I wouldn't say we lacked belief as we could have been 2 up before they scored I think we just crumbled jfp we can only learn from this I can see Brendan Rodgers thinking about not changing because would oh rather lose trying to win or lose trying not to get beat.

It was like Tyson v Bruno when we scored. Then the commentator said “he’s hurt Tyson” When we all new he’d just woke up a monster (PSG) . We will probably have better luck in Europa but don’t really like the Thursday night stuff. It wrecks our domestic scene.

Jfp1888 we could easily score 7 against Brechin
Last season we took
6 off Kilmarnock
5 off the rangers
4 off aberdeen
All SPFL teams.

There is a saying in life "you get what u pay for", nothing could be more true regarding the CL.
It has now gone to different levels for me, Bayern, PSG. Barca, Real are on different planets to ALL other teams including Man City Juve Man Utd etc and they are spending 100s of millions.
Then there is the next level which would include the above with maybe a Monaco Chelsea, Spurs, Dortmund, Napoli etc.
Then there is teams who we are expected to compete against like Zenit, Benfica, Donetsk, Seville, Milan I could go on, but even these teams are spending 80-100m.
How do we compete against that.
I not moaning guys just putting out the reality of the situation. For me at the minute getting in the CL is a trophy for us cos we have literally no chance of qualifying unless we get real lucky.
Nobody likes getting gubbed but does it benefit us? that's a big YES from me cos not being there is much much worse believe me.
So I would ask stop dissecting our defeats to the likes of PSG etc and concentrate on what we CAN do.

Believable4 Unbelievable2

23 Nov 2017 16:59:41
First of all Man City are better than Real and Bayern (who are really poor at the moment) and are possibly the best team in the world at the moment.

Secondly a Martin O'Neill, Gordon Strachan or Neil Lennon would not be embarrassed like that in Europe. I don't think Celtic should be beating teams like this but they shouldn't be shipping 12 goals in to games. Look at PSG's results in the league against Montpellier or Dijon who they've beaten 2-1 and 2-0.

One win in 11 CL group games isn't good enough for Celtic and is worse than O'Neill, Strachan and Lennon.

Should be renamed 'who's the richest' league because three of the teams mentioned there Barcelona Manchester City and PSG aren't even champions but are all loaded. To get remotely near these teams we need luck on our side because for all I thought SIMUNOVIC and Boyata were horrendous last night . who are we going to buy or afford that would have stopped that? Said before domestic dominance is our bread and butter. How much longer can we continue to ship goals galore before becoming a laughing stock in europe.

Agree1 Disagree2

23 Nov 2017 17:52:52
C bear I know you've probably lost track of modern day CL football, but i can tell you the financial gulf now compared to O'Neils Strachans or Lennons day is huge. We could compete better then because we weren't being outspent so hugely back then. PSG had a player on the bench last night that cost roughly twice what the whole Celtic starting 11 cost to assemble. I noticed you hand picked 2 of PSG's worst results of the season ( which they still won) rather than the multiple hidings they've handed out.

Agree0 Disagree1

23 Nov 2017 18:01:43
Who did they have on the bench worth 100 million? Financial gulf is no different than Dijon v PSG. I think the players values have now become vastly inflated recently but in not sure the gulf is that different between lennons side and Rodgers team.

Agree0 Disagree1

23 Nov 2017 18:19:52
They didn't have anyone on the bench worth 100 million but they had Di Maria who cost 46 million and the Celtic team last night cost roughly 20 million.

Great Post Rayman99,
While I’m extremely disappointed by the result last night, our target was to qualify for the Europa League/ Cup. We are on course to do that providing we don’t balls it up.
I’m not one who likes to criticise any Celtic Player as I always try to back the Team. But there’s a first time for everything. Hopefully the performance last night shows Brendan must strengthen the Defence. At the moment Boyata and Jozo are good for the Scottish League but the CL is a completely different matter.
This is where the problem lies, we could go out and buy 2 new CB in Jan for say £5m each. We might improve but can we honestly say this will make the difference in the CL?
Getting to the Group Stages is a major achievement but I feel the Europa is our level at the moment.
We just need to hope we’ll learn from this and try to make our Defence a more solid unit, which will take time.
Oh well, looking forward to Sunday. I’m going as my daughter gave me a hard time and basically said we’re going to Hampdump.
We have dreams and songs to sing! 🍀🍀.

The above posts made me think of the serenity prayer - "Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change and the wisdom to know the difference" I think its fair to say that in the present world Celtic are not going to compete with the PSG's of this world because of the money that have available to them. Of course anything can happen and we will occasionally get a result just a Progres did against the best team in the universe but realistically I think we have to accept that PSG are on a different planet so what do we need the courage to change and perhaps that means that on occasion we need to play with "catenaccio" style of Giovanni Trapatoni's teams. I will however not presume to have the wisdom to know the difference so I will leave that up to Brendan. Anyway a cup on Sunday should help to ease the pain. COYBIG.

C-bear85 I guess you forgot Barcelona skelped Lennons side 6-1 and strachan lost 5-0 to a team of nobody's in his first season.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Nov 2017 09:54:42
So are we saying that because two £5m defenders that won't make a difference in the CL? Of course it would. What's the alternative? We just say what's the point?

Improving us defensively is vital. If we improve defensively for the CL we increase the likelihood of domestic domination and access to the money.

Four of the goals were defensive balls ups. We need to address this and a keeper is also a must.

Putting us in a position to win 3rd place every year and post Christmas participation, should be our goal and in order for that to be remotely possible means the defence needs gutted.

I thought we threatened them well at times. But when your defence gifts four goals it's too much to overcome. Changes needed to be made in the summer. That it was'nt worries me. This result will be looked back on as a pivotal moment like the semi defeat to Rangers. Everybody knows what needs to be done. There is no hiding place now, sufs in the street know it and I believe Rogers will sort it.

24 Nov 2017 13:10:52
Magicpole I didn't say spending won't make a difference. You would hope it does but there's no guarantee.
Just look at the money Everton have spend and where are they?
I hope that with good coaching and with our World wide Scouting system we'll pick up a couple of CB gems at a affordable price.

I'm a spurs fan who also loves Celtic, when the English media laugh at Celtic's poor performance in the champions league need to get real. Psg front 3 would be enough to buy the whole of Celtic football club lol . Like I said many of times if Celtic had the revenue if most of the European clubs they would be winning the champions league as well. I bet neymars one week wages would pay the whole squad wages for a few weeks. I will always be proud of the bohys whatever the results.

PSG may well beat the English clubs but I doubt that they would put 7 past them.
I love what Rodgers has done for our club, but he doesn't seem to learn any lessons as regards European football. We really have to become better organised against these teams and make ourselves more difficult to beat
I don't expect us to go away from home against these teams and win, but we shouldn't be letting 5,6,and 7 goals past us so often, we should at least be able to keep the score down.
The problem is that it's not just happening against the big guns of Europe, we scored 5 goals against Astana at home but still managed to concede 4 in the away leg, we lost to Lincoln red imps last season, and only just held on against Hapoel, again after scoring 5 in the home leg.
I don't know if it's tactics, or whether some players are just not good enough, but we really have to try and do something about it.
Last week England, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland (at least in the away leg) all played superior opposition, but they were all well organised and kept their games very tight.
That is what we should be aiming for.

23 Nov 2017 16:57:14
Gerryc i agree with what your saying I don't know if it's just Brendan's inability to organise a defensive setup or just too stubborn to change from his attacking philosophy but your right I don't think many people thought we could go there and get a result so why not organise the team to make it more difficult for them hit them on the break occasionally and limit their scoring chances. on a side note the FFP regulations are a complete joke salary caps and transfer budget caps are required now I think it is getting beyond a joke also the fact they were allowed to take mbappe on loan after his transfer was blocked just makes a mockery of the FFP reg's.

Agree0 Disagree1

23 Nov 2017 17:06:16
digibanger, that's the whole point, we shouldn't be in a position where we are playing this level of opposition with players playing out of position. You can probably get away with doing that in our league, but you won't get away with it in Europe.
In my opinion we badly need a goalkeeper who gives confidence to the defence, and we also need a Centre half who can read the game at that level.
As I said previously, we aren't just struggling to contain the elite teams in Europe, the smaller teams are finding us a soft touch as well.
We have good forward players who can cause problems for most teams, but they've got no chance to shine whilst we are conceding this amount of goals.

Agree0 Disagree1

23 Nov 2017 17:53:38
Feel sorry for Bitton he's only playing were he's told to. Probably be out the door soon but to put the guy in defence against a team like that was bordering on cruelty. Blame for that lies squarely with BR and the board.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed007's Note - What happened to Arsenal against Bayern Munich or City against us last year?}

23 Nov 2017 16:58:27
The real elite are psg Bayern Madrid and Barca, teams from Croatia Belgium Holland Denmark Poland us and even Portugal to an extent are only playing these clubs to fulfill their fixtures so they can collect the CL money, they are not really competing with them, there’s always been some teams with extra money, but nothing like this, Man it’s liverpool Milan Benfica Celtic PSV Ajax Red Star etc all won this tournament with mainly players from their country-how many Parisians play for Paris? They may aswell be called Middle East money athletic, that’s all they are.

No doubt I’m about to get some grief here as I am as critical on tierney last night as those being castigated here. He was missing for at least three goals and seriously misjudged many balls that should have been his.
We have to be balanced, if Boyata and Gordon are to be criticised in the face of such overwhelmingly better opposition then be fair and mention Tierney, Brown and McGregor in the same post
Tin hat at the ready.

Agree1 Disagree1

24 Nov 2017 10:30:37

BR cannot go into europe with the same mentality, tactics, and formations, he needs to adjust and adapt to the better teams who we know that we cannot beat, and hope for a draw and not a humiliation, lenny and O'neil knew their limitations, although they had some decent defenders. The team needs Quality defenders and a goalkeeper, the fans can see this, why can't a manager or board see this. Hopefully January. Hail.

I went away on 11 euro trios with Martins team. We didn't win one. Away from home we were utter shite mostly.

The problem, as dugs in the street do, it's our defence and keeper that are dragging us down.

One great thing about last nights mauling is, we need to address it. Last night could well be the ball booting Rogers and Lawell need to buy defenders. Giving Doris an extension doesn't bode well for their judgement though.

Minds should be focused, but, it's Celtic we are talking about, so, don't hid yer breath. :)

Hopefully though, this can be another watershed like the semi final defeat.

Last night showed again that when we come up against the elite of europe that we cannot try and play the same way we do in domestic football as we are never going to have the amount of time we have on the ball as we do in scotland and also we must have a plan b were we can try and play ugly football and shut the game down because to give the amount of space to world class players and silly passes in our own half and give the ball away 20 yards from out goal is suicide football, sometimes play the ball long to moussa get players around him to pick up the second ball and even if we lose the ball it is not 20 yards from our goal
Enough of that now on to hampden to win first of three.

BR Jan wish list must be CH and a number 10 with real quality simple as that what's your thoughts EDs.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed007's Note - A 'keeper is more a priority than any other position and until we have some quality between the sticks we're going to struggle in Europe. Why go out and splash millions on a CB when the weakest link in the team is still behind him?}

23 Nov 2017 17:04:35
Aye start at the back but that's no going to happen wae de vrice signing an extension but definitely need both and a number 10 for me is needed someone who can keep ball and pass it right too I know it's no even Dec but have u heard anything possible targets ED?

{Ed007's Note - Nah, nothing yet.}

23 Nov 2017 17:06:50
Mostly agree Ed that CG is a very weak link but I personally could not fault him too much last night, especially the goals. They saw our right side of defence was weak and that was where they hit us hard.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed007's Note - I'm not meaning for games against your PSGs and I'm not blaming Gordon - or anyone else - for last night but Gordon has consistently let us down on the European stage, all the way back to his first season and playing in the EL.
At European level we will always risk conceding with Gordon in goal no matter who the opposition are.
His constant palming the ball into back into the danger area, decision making at coming for balls and his well known weakness at his near post will always cost us. Although his mistakes are rarely punished in the SPFL, he still makes them and at the higher level they will be punished.
Gordon is a good shot-stopper but he isn't a good goalkeeper.}

25 Nov 2017 07:58:56
Brown gave the ball away for the 1st, some fantastic play for the 2nd, then the heads went down, was talking to a sensible hun today, and he made a point that the Celtic players looked as though they didn’t believe they can compete with these teams, and I agree slightly, but PSG are an outstanding team, and will beat a few teams this year with similar score lines, as much as I hate saying it, that wee shite Neymar is one of the best players in Europe at this moment.

Do not want to be too negative given we are on course for our target of securing European football after Xmas. Coupled with the fact we are still unbeaten domestically and thus top of the league with a cup final to look forward to on Sunday.
BUT, I am not happy with last night's performance or the home game vs PSG and the away game vs Bayern this season. I understand how big the gap between teams like us and teams like PSG is, but getting beat 7-1 and 5-0 at any level is embarrassing.
Rodgers must change his approach to these games against the elite teams or we will continually be beat with such ease. It is unrealistic to think we can challenge these teams at their own game. We need to be much more pragmatic, be organised and be aggressive if we want any chance of getting a result in these games. These kind of defeats do not teach us any lessons clearly because we would have learned from Barcelona last season if so.

Gordon needs replacing. If we improve defensively then we cut out giving the opposition a couple of goals each game. That achieved we play to win. We have never been a defensive team. That doesn't mean we shouldn't have a good defence. At present its not fit for purpose. Sort that and we move forward.

I noticed Dermot at the game. He knows what needs to be done. He likes the CL adulation and positive impact it can make of the club. Allowing us to get jumped dents that. It can be sorted but it needs him to sanction the harvesting of the tin.

I think he will.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Nov 2017 07:59:50
The game at home against Psg we had a very weakened team with key players missing, as we did against Bayern both home and away that everyone seems to forget. We are like many teams in the CL, making the numbers up and realistically a europa league team, even if we created another Lisbon lion team, the big clubs would buy them from us.

There’s no scope for maybe setting up the team to be hard to beat then? Because we’ve tried it the other way and we get annihilated every time! 6 games against Barcelona Bayern and PSG in the last year 26 goals conceded 2 scored! But hey let’s just live with it eh! Utter nonsense! Yes we all know these teams are miles ahead in terms of finance and players they can buy, there’s not a person on here who can deny that! But that doesn’t mean we need to set up for a pummelling every time we play! Brendan says again last nite we’ll learn from this, well we clearly aren’t learning! And I’d rather see my club not make the CL than watch that every time we’re in it!
