The biscuit tin or EBTs

The biscuit tin is almost as familiar to the Celtic support as EBTs are to the Rangers support.

To be honest, I wasn't really overly familiar with all the EBT allegations against Rangers until the published report of the FTT findings and I suspect I was not the only one.

For any Celtic supporter the tax case was a huge amusement but when allegations of something else starting to arise it became a different matter. These allegations were not trumped up by the Celtic Support or HMRC or the SPL or the SFA indeed they came from within Rangers from a former Rangers director, Hugh Adam.

Rangers are innocent unless proven guilty and are entitled to a fair and honest investigation by the SPL, something they now and never really have wanted. Why would you not want a fair hearing, given the allegations ?

After Adam's allegations, evidence to suggest they had a case to answer was collected by the SPL's lawyers and a verdict will be reached and any punishment applied by an eminent judge and two QCs. At no point is any other club involved in the process.

This isn't an investigation into using EBTs, it's a probe into specific allegations of SPL rule-breaking. It began with a statement on March 5 which said: "The SPL board has instructed an investigation into the alleged non-disclosure to the SPL of payments made by or on behalf of Rangers FC to players since July 1 1998' Hugh Adam said of the alleged payments: "They weren't included in the contracts. That was the whole point of them."

It doesn't matter what your opinion on Hugh Adam is but were the SPL just to ignore it, was the rest of the teams in Scottish football supposed to ignore it ?

The side letters are more than mentioned in the report. If Rangers had nothing to hide why did they NEVER seek guidance from the SPL or SFA on them give the complex nature of EBTs ?

When Celtic won the European Cup and 9-in-a-row it was home-grown talent and manager who was and still is the greatest Scottish manager ever.

If any other Scottish team had such allegations against them, would the Rangers fans not want answers given their team always played by the rules. Does Scottish football not deserve a fair hearing ?

If there is a Rangers Fergus McCann that would have come forward had the tax case never been they who and where is/she ? You do not go into administration or liquidation for debts you MIGHT have.

They are in Div 3 now and will be forever justifying claims of unfair advantages, world records, is it 55 or 1 title. I hope the humiliation is worth it

Rangers alone face an investigation because they are the only SPL club accused of making widespread undisclosed payments and the accusation was made by one of their own.

Great post. .H.

If Fergus McCann had not come forth there were ten Multi millionaires in his wake queuing up behind him to deliver for Scotland's greatest club. Those men are still there in the background.

Just reading the dr now n can't believe the nonsense by hateley. It was a majority decision, morally it's the wrong decision n now he's claiming damages n u turns on embargoes, consideration in lge reconstruction. WTF.
Ed, this result is going to cause even more hassle, hatred, call it what u want. Stevo dundee {Ed007's Note - Hateley's an idiot Stevo and.... Nope there is nothing else to add to that. Him and Bomber would make a great double act, Dumb and Hateley.}

Believable6 Unbelievable3

Stevo, if HMRC do appeal and subsequently win..will the rest of Scottish football be due an apology. Will they be due compensation for the predicted armageddon of lost TV revenue and sponsorship never mind the damage to Scottish football ?

They have spoken now, each and every one of anything to do with Rangers from players, management, EBT recipients to the fans. They had better hope with every prayer HMRC do not appeal as all they done since the FTT findings has been digging one almighty hole for themselves.

The only person suspiciously quiet is David Murray.

League reconstruction, they only thing for me worthwhile is play-offs.

Evening Percy's,

Just having a laugh at all you wounded and affronted SevBears!

What's all this nonsense about you demanding apologies from all and sundry? Are you serious?

You're embarrassing yourselves with this pathetic insistence that we all owe you an apology. For what? Calling it as we see it?

David Murray shafted your club, I know it, Graham Spiers knows it.......everyone knows it!

Rangers got their decision by a majority, there's obviously doubts as to Rangers' financial integrity, doubts we all share.....well, anyone outwith the mighty downfallen!

Even ex-players are now coming out saying they were paid dues through the EBT scheme!

The tribunal result is only the begining, for the sake of integrity I hope HMRC pursue this and appeal. My opinion is my democratic right and based on what I've heard and know, I stand by my convictions......without prejudice.....or an apology! lol

Then there's the issue of side letters......I defo think Peter Law.....oops, I mean Neil Doncaster will eventually have to get stripping! lol

We want what's rightfully ours.....your ill-gotten titles!

Cue the onslaught!

So is that it now rangers never cheated and don't owe any money and they shouldn't have liquidated the club then cause that's the feeling I get from media and fat Sally !!

HA HA ESPN have scored a classic own goal.
Their choice of the 3rd Div clash at Elgin has
been cancelled due to over selling of tickets.
Just shows that 3rd Div football should not be covered and viewers dont pay to watch
this rubbish. No TV money for Rangers this weekend.

Its a bit like ted bundy asking for apologies because one of the 30 odd guilty s was not proven

Daily ranger today - Hateley wants SPL probe dropped - Blaming them and SFA, HMRC and other fans for where Rangers are he wants transfer embargo dropped. Who is he kidding, has he something to hide?. As for the D. Record and Sun when are they going to report about the rest of the game they have made enough headlines out of this story give other fans respect and stop harping on about a diddly team in the lower echelons of the Scottish game
Rob.

Believable7 Unbelievable4

Not guilty before the case comes up.
call the kettle black. .H.

Whether they have to pay tax or not rangers used a loop hole that allowed the club to sign players tax free that gave them an unfair advantage over other clubs no matter how you look at it none of those titles where won fairly

graeme souness received 30000 from ebt scheme the ebt scheme didnt start until around 10 year after souness left rangers he was not an employee he was manager of blackburn and had just completed a transfer for millions of pounds from rangers its obvious that was a back hander and proves two things 1... the ebt was used to fund corrupt and illegal payments thats against the rules and 2... it was not used as ( employment benefit trust ) because souness was not an employee the whole scheme was corrupt and rangers just got lucky that the panel members where cut from the same cloth

Believable15 Unbelievable3

Graham Souness was but an employee of rangers. How could he possibly benefit from an employee benefit trust set up several years after he left rangers? Ridiculous! Corruption!

Agree4 Disagree0

My father in law knows a few of the old Scotland players and a few of them have said that if you shake hands with Souness you should count your fingers and then wash your hands. How can a guy that has played and managed at the top level for years, is a multi millionaire and even now he is a TV pundit need a loan that he has STILL not paid back. It stinks rank rotten, look at the players he signed for Blackburn and then there is Boumsong to Newcastle. He was not an employee of Rangers yet he used an EBT they set up? The whole thing is rotten to the core, at least justice was done and HMRC can still smile about liquidating and destroying Rangers. I would say that is a good day at the office for anyone. I might even pay extra tax as a thank you.

They Died Chasing Lions.

Agree3 Disagree1

@ 2 you might have to pay more tax because not only did they run tax scams that seen multi millionaire players avoid paying tax which goes towards education nhs and stuff they now want to sue them and take more money out the tax payers pockets is their no stopping how low they will stoop ... but what makes me sick is these players every year at christmass visited yorkhill to see these children some terminally ill and some needing life saving operations sign autographs and pose for pictures knowing they where scamming the taxman that denies them the money that could save their lives now their celebrating how do these people sleep at night

Agree9 Disagree1

Maybe a letter to SDM asking for a loan wouldn't be out of the question? Bit cheeky?
Lotto tomorrow night, jackpot is a £6.7 million loan i hear.

can someone clear this up for me... have oldco now paid the outstanding tax bill from last year along with the paye ?? or are they still tax cheats ??

Believable10 Unbelievable1

Still tax cheats for that and perhaps at least 11 more years... Wait and see.

Agree2 Disagree2

Rangers Oldco were liquidated with £55m of debt, including £25m owed to HMRC. The debt to HMRC relates to the PAYE, NIC and VAT that Craig Whyte failed to pay and also around £3.5m relating to the Wee Tax Case which was from 3 years ago and nothing to do with Whyte.

Furthermore, Rangers have admitted at the FTTT that there were 5 players who they illegally paid through EBTs. This debt will have to be added to the £55m.

Amazingly some fans that supported this club seem to think they have done nothing wrong.

K-Dot.

Agree4 Disagree1

The agreed tax debt with D&P was £94.4m.
The EBT tax case says up to £47m not payable so that leaves £48m at least payable in tax plus other debts.

Agree2 Disagree1

Gotta luv the taxman
He may have played a blinder here.
This opens the door for BDO to go and chase for the loans to be repaid at 100% of the value of which he will get a share as a creditor. If the taxman had won he would be entitled to a share of only 50% which can never be recovered so 50% of nothing.

Believable9 Unbelievable4

For what i hear the loans where made from murrays company and not the club so bdo will have no power to re claim it

Agree1 Disagree2

No Mols and others have specifically claimed negotiations and side contracts were undertaken with Rangers people at Ibrox.
A lot of EBTs found guilty. Only shredding documents saved the others.

Agree4 Disagree2

BDO CHASING SDM FOR £6m plus interest apparently. Plus guys like Mols for £36m plus interest plus directors and management.

A link to the STV website giving the case for and against in our terms :-)

I honestly don't care and have said before strip them, keep them whatever but this victim card is laughable. The side letters were hidden even from the club's own auditors. No other Scottish football club did this, legal or not..its unfair and David Murray only being concerned about how some documents became public acknowledges that he knows he has had a lucky escape.

The QC for Murray is said in the tribunal documents to have 'conceded that where it derived from a (footballer's) side-letter it was contractual, but not in the cases of bonuses paid to employees of other Murray Group companies'

Side-letters, of course, had not been registered with the football authorities, the SFA and SPL. The spirit of their rules was that the whole contract terms should be registered. Suspiciously, no evidence was led as to who decided that the benefits in terms of the side-letters should not be registered.
Rangers could have sought a ruling from the SFA or SPL about disclosure of side-letters but, clearly, they had chosen not to do so. There was a conscious decision to conceal their existence, and that extended even to the Club's auditors.

Mrs E

Believable4 Unbelievable5

SDM does not care about old Rangers if liabilities. He only cares about Murray Group tax liabilities now.
The case for cheating and titles stripped is watertight, that's not the issue, he knew that, the issue was EBT and tax and he's happy with that.
