Been sitting speaking to a family friend about celtic for the last hour and he seems to think the board are dragging there heels over the new manager because they want a 'yes man', and that who we are signing and who's going this summers already planned. If this was the case and I wasn't a celt through and through it certainly wouldn't be a job I'd like to walk into.

Hail Hail

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Your friend has an opinion. Doesn't mean it's 100% right or even 1% right. I have a friend who believes that UFO's are at his house every night. Doesn't mean he's right either.

Agree0 Disagree0

Just some ones thoughts mate nothing else.

Just seen that Kris and Lisa Commons took the Knox family on holiday with them after the tragic passing of wee Oscar. My God if ever a player, and his magnificent wife, got us it's him. What a gesture.Outstanding.
Truly the Celtic way.

First of all I'm a Liverpool fan but I can't believe the amount of fans on here who don't want Roy Keane as their new manager.I have no doubts that he will become a top manager because the man is a born winner and will eventually succeed because that's his nature, if he takes something on he will go to any lengths to be the best.I have always had a soft spot for Celtic because my Da is a diehard and always hope they do well but some people would want to get a reality check on here because the league is fast sliding towards amateur standards and fans should be grateful that a man of Roy Keane's stature is being linked with the club.I would tell these lads be careful what you wish for because you might end up with someone that would take the York job in the morning if it was available ie Owen Coyle.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hi Irish Kenny, this is a VERY valid point and "yes" you are right, the BOD would get away with a lower profile appointment (because of the state of our game) but RK is box office whatever way you look at it; I am now almost arguing against myself, IE maybe Keane would be just about the best option under ALL of the unique circumstances that affect CFC, chiefly "impoverished league and dire competition"

Agree0 Disagree0

If it isn't Roy Keane and say it is Owen Coyle, I'd feel as if the rug had been pulled for under me!

If ever a phrase applied to a set of fans 'be careful what you wish for' is Celtic fans.

Booed Fergus, ran out Strachan etc

Agree0 Disagree0

Would you like? take him as lfc manager?

Agree0 Disagree0

One thing that I like about Keane is that neither players nor the media will mess him around . We will have interesting times .

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd be okay with swapping Keane for Brendan Rodgers. I'd also throw in Stokes and Griffiths for Sturridge.

Agree0 Disagree0

Scottish footballs Gonny be borin enough yourman so at least RK will come in and liven things up, he'll give the SMS a run for there money hail hail

Agree0 Disagree0

I just think he'll stir controvery with the media, SFA/SPFL, board, dressing room, etc. His ego n temperament are not what we need right now!

Agree0 Disagree0

HB come on the media had it in for wee Gordon because of his intelligence and dry wit, they had it in for Lenny because they said he was aggressive and confrontational so no doubt if RK gets the job there will be something with him to, let's not lie down to them, am personally lookin forward to Roy giving them what for if he gets the job?

Request for a poll please Ed, 001 or 007:

Not taking into account media suggestions, who's first choice for Manager would have been Roy Keane?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - I can't really set a poll up asking that, we won't know who's voted etc.}

Interesting video of Jack Charlton talking about Keano. Watch it all if you like but make sure you at least watch the last minute.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

01 Jun 2014 18:07:54
Well it looks like it will be keano. Could be a lot worse the only thing that concerns me is the time he will put in. How long will he last and how much grief can he or his family take from the persons on the street and the hacks who spin the bull on a daily basis in the gutter rag media. Both of celtic's last couple of managers have been hounded out of the job in my opinion to destabilise the club. Keane won't take any nonsense but neither did Gordon Strachan or Neil Lennon all winners good enough for me Hail Hail

My reply had nout to do with Keane . It was to do with the comment " what goes around comes around " . I was pointing out what happend to 2 Celtic prospects . I don't give 2 flying f@@@s how hard Keane was on the park I'm not interested . What I am interested in is how good a manager he will be and can he take the club forward . I hope and pray ( if he accepts ) he will . DH

Does anyone have any ideas as to who the 10 or so candidates are?

I think right now would be a great chance for us to bring some style to the Scottish game, I really would like to see Oscar Garcia, or someone with a background for flair join us.

I'd love to see Lubo back at the club in some capacity, the guy was a natural talent and I'm sure he could pass on some of those tricks to a willing young squad.

Or are we just going to get mad Roy Keane?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hi BigDave

I think there is a phenomenal opportunity right now to bring in an unproven hands on coach with big ambitions. The nature of the domestic league is such that CFC have an opportunity to adapt to a style that is more pleasing on the eye, IE "domestically" at least the margin for error is significant so we can tinker here and there and keep plugging away to derive a better passing style, more possession etc. NL did have CFC playing some good stuff at times; and before anyone shoots me down about the very poor level of opponent, you can only beat what is in front of you at the end of the day!

When you look at the first 11 and the 4 or 5 others on the periphery, there is definitely a nucleus of a decent team there (player sales aside)

Forster, Lustig (or Matthews, Izzy (or Mulgrew), Virgil, Ambrose (or Lustig/or Mulgrew), Brown, Johansen, Forrest, Commons, Stokes and Griffiths (with Biton, Henderson) is certainly not the worst eleven we have had to endure in the past 30 years.

The problem has always been the elusive number "10" in the moravcik mould but the worry has always been the high level of exposure (when you don't have the ball) caused by these marquee/luxury players; domestically we can square that circle but in Europe?

A new manager would probably make room for the hard core and build around that, but the "style and approach" will be governed by the new Head Coach's philosophy.

If money was no object (and fitness was guaranteed for the current squad) I think you could go with a 4 - 3 - 1 - 2 with 1 of the 3 in the middle and the 3 up top alternating between the middle of the park and wider areas, bearing in mind the 2 full backs aren't so bad at posing as old style wing backs (if the set-up is to become (as would be inevitable in my set-up) a little bit narrower from middle to front)

In a 4 - 3 - 1 -2 scenario you could conceivably go with "commons" as the pivot between midfield and attack. Stokes and Griffiths up top (both of whom are perfectly capable of drifting left and right (albeit there is a tendency for Stokes and Griffiths to move "left" more so than right. In that scenario, you would be relying on Matthews as the careering right back to give you width and balance (when attacking)

Lustig would come in to the centre of defence with Virgil and Izzy would be your left back/wing back (not for his defensive qualities per se but because you can get a great shift out of Izzy and he is always willing!)

Mulgrew, Brown and Johansen would be your middle 3 with Johansen asked to sweep right and left (between midfield and defence) when the opposition break (depending on what side of the park they break on, Johansen would be the "protector"

Brown would be the run-about-mad traditional central midfielder and Mulgrew (with the right encouragement) could be the guy asked to mix things up in terms of offering a range of passing, taking the ball from the defenders and plotting searching passes etc.

The team above would be a sensible option for Europe as Stokes and Griffiths can hold the ball up and can come deep. A slightly more defensive approach (naturally) but we would still have 3 to 4 pretty good players on the park capable of match winning set pieces and excellent delivery (Griffiths, Mulgrew, Stokes and Commons)

For me Commons doesn't have the legs for out wide and is never a striker and could (with the right support and set up) find a role in that part of the park between the half way line and the 18 yard box, IE the number "10" we all want but don't have…he could conceivably be a cheap option in that regard!

There is definitely something to work on there.

If NL is to be believed, we could even have Biton playing as one of the middle 3 with Mulgrew moving to left back for the more dangerous European games where we need a bit of height and weight (sorry Izzy)

In the above line-up, you have a "core" and a team difficult to beat. You won't have pace in abundance but the introduction of Forrest (depending on the opponent and the way the match is going) would be an interesting addition.

The "ideal" scenario would involve a new striker (penalty box type) in the mould of Finbogosson but I can see why CFC PLC would be reluctant to splash the cash on such a player (+£5m) because that type of "pigeonholed" player that operates in a very small area of the park can take away from the robustness of the overall approach and strategy of the whole team.

I don't think we can afford a domestic team and a european team so I think we should "perfect" a set-up and yes, when the time is right and the opponent merits little respect, you can go with a more dynamic middle to front approach (less narrow) but the basis should be about rock-solid triangulate set-ups

In defence Virgil / Lustig and 1 of the middle 3 dropping back

In the middle of the park Brown, MUlgrew and Johanssen when 1 of the 3 is not required to back up the 2 centre halves

and up top, Griffiths, Stokes and Commons.

We have a great big goalie and decent cover at full back

so the quadruple next year …IE Europa League, League, Scottish Cup and League Cup (make it 5 and include the Glasgow Cup!)

The problem with gifted players is they cannot pass a gift on to lesser players.Glen Hoddle, arguably the most gifted player England ever produced, said the same when he was managing.

paradisewon, why do you feel such a need to bring in an 'unproven' manager? It's almost a fashion statement in football now and rarely pays off. Just asking. I'd much rather see someone come in who has done and seen it all. I know that's not what we'll get though, wether it be because we're and SPFL club or because we're skimpers, it just won't happen. Given the two names, Coyle and Keane, who have been seriously linked, I'd prefer Keane. But that's only because the other option is Coyle. Would anybody's first choice be Keane?

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi JimJim

not saying the coach should be unproven per se, more alluding to the idea that such is the state of our game domestically, that an unproven coach with bright ideas may not be a bad option, or certainly shouldn't be discounted (due to lack of experience)

proven coaches (the ones we can get) will all have histories, so there will be baggage …those who have experience and have a midas touch will be out with our reach unless they have won 13 in a row in liechtenstein

01 Jun 2014 19:51:23
Fair enough, somebody with perhaps a more continental approach to how a game should be played? A philosophy would you say? In that sense you're right, it would be fresh and exciting. I'm not one to discount a proven track record though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Natural talents like Lubo usually find it near impossible to develop other players . What is natural to them is impossible for ordinary players to learn .

Do you think that PL is to be believed with the continual referral to (between) 5 - 10 on-going simultaneous discussions with other candidates?

Why are the papers all over RK? We know MON broke rank and declared that a discussion had taken place. We hear PL saying that the club is talking to many others. We also hear that DD would not offer RK the job only to give it to someone else.

Who do you think is running this show; is it a board working to a set criteria, or is it DD working in isolation with PL and his gang being towed along?

If I were 1 of the other 4 or 9 (!), if the papers are to be believed, I wouldn't even bother picking up the phone or attending a 2nd interview (or 1st) until the RK link is booted out.

This potential appointment suggests that RK is not the fans choice, notwithstanding one wouldn't always go with the fans' view in any event. However, a poll suggested 6% support!

I will get behind any celtic managerial appointment but would you agree that it has been handled very poorly by people who should know better, chiefly DD, MON and PL? RK, to his credit, has said nothing.

Your thoughts?

Interestingly, I do not think it will be Roy Keane and that come Wednesday when he jests off to the US, there will be next to no momentum (in the press) built up behind the actual candidate of choice.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - I don't believe for a minute that Dermot Desmond didn't know exactly what MON was going to say at his press conference, remember that they are good friends and MON wouldn't break any confidence without Desmond's blessing. There's always the scenario that MON said what he said to try and force a third party to the table if they think Keane is ahead of them by holding talks with DD.
If Desmond gets his way this time I think it's obvious it will be Keane but it isn't just down to Desmond, the board and Lawwell will have input on the decision and that's where the list of candidates comes from, they will look at everyone available and people who have applied for it.
I don't see anything wrong in what Desmond, MON or Lawwell have done so far.}

Gotta agree with ED on this one.MON would never have made a public statement without Desmonds say so.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we should be grateful that a name like roy keane is actually linked with the club to be honest!when u look at the state of our game here in Scotland i'm surprised he's considering it, i'm all for keane coming in I think he will be a tough manager who I would hope he gets the team fitter!how many players went out on loan last season and were told they were not fit enough!

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed

Do you think RK will be the next celtic manager?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It's looking more and more likely.}

Anyone that really wants the manager's job at Celtic, will not let rumours or loose talk from MO'N to stop him from having his first or second interview . Those who are not really interested will drop out stating that they would not take part in what is now a charade .

DN -Alfie Halland stood over RK berating the man after he'd just done his ligaments and was out the game for 9months, what goes around comes around, my god we had peter grant, Roy Aiken, Bertie auld, bobby Collins, bobo balde every one could leave there foot in it's all part of the game, thug away and behave yourself

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Tell that to John Kennedy and Stevie Murray who both had promising careers cut short by bottle merchants . And as for Peter Grant, he was to busy pointing to make dirty tackles . DH

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Whose career did Keane cut short, apart from his own?}

John Kennedy had his playing career cut short by a bad tackle not a bottle merchant and he's done ok since then with a benefit match and coaching and employment from celtic. That's the way of football at all levels bad/reckless tackles happen. Roy keane gave it out and received it throughout his career. If we could get Roy keane to instill some of his skill and determination into our squad I for one won't be complaining.

An earlier poster stated that screaming and shouting from a Manager (in most instances) won't work. I agree fully with that point. Give me a really good Coach who can coax performances from his boys, praise them and make them raise their games, do not belittle or break their spirit. Hair Dryer treatment stinks. Will Keano put his arm round a players shoulders like Wee Gordie would? let's hope so. In solidarity with the vast majority of us I will be right behind Roy if he is the Chosen One. If that turns out to be the case I hope he appreciates what this Club means to all of us. There is never a day goes by when I don't think about the Celtic.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

01 Jun 2014 10:24:13
For those of us who aren't keen on Keane becoming our new boss, remember, there is still some hope for us. If the club do offer him the job (and some say they already have) he might not take it. He might not fancy 2 or 3 years in the Glasgow goldfish bowl. He might not want his family to be subjected to it. He doesn't need the money and he seems to have plenty to do with his time as it is. There are many reasons why he may decide to say no.
I like him as a TV pundit and I liked him as a player. I followed his managerial career at Sunderland (reasonably good until it went wrong) and Ipswich too (where it just didn't work from day one) but I just don't think he is the guy for us. Having said that if he signs up then I'll be right behind him.

Does anyone think that certain candidates may have access to the promise of a better transfer fund than others? Would RK accept a sell before buy scenario, does DD,s finances have a preference as to who gets to use them? Can,t see all applicants being offered a level playing field, but as a tim, I obviously suffer from severe paranoia.
