One thing that concerns me about Lee Congerton is his recent spell with Sunderland. Apart from Defoe, their recruitment over the past few seasons has been diabolical. Sunderland are just about the epitome of the BPL spending way above average money for way below average players.

We need to give the man a chance think he was only there about a year so don't think he's fully responsible for all there woes. A would think any Sunderland manager would have the final say on any player signings.

Agree0 Disagree2

15 Mar 2017 22:27:05
Absolutely, everyone deserves a chance and hopefully he helps to bring in a lot of good players for the club. I've just seen that some Sunderland fans have been giving him some bad criticism on social media about his time there.

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed007's Note - Let's be honest, Sunderland's a bit of a circus club - Martin Bain's their CEO for a start - and Ellis Short cut budgets and transfer funds a while back after he decided he wanted to sell the club.
As I said I don't know hee haw about him but there's some interesting articles out there about him:

You're right Ed, they made a load of folk redundant recently which is unbelievable for how much money they take in year upon year.

Agree1 Disagree2

{Ed007's Note - I didn't know that, Kev.}

Well two of their players who he recruited did very well for us in the past, denayer and Mathews, pickford is an outstanding young keeper, Sebastian Larsson, jack rodwell and Fabio borini are very good players, who I would take at Celtic, so could it be a case of the management not getting the best out of them, rather than the recruitment being bad?

Agree1 Disagree2

16 Mar 2017 01:48:55
watching denayer recently, it looks as if sunderland have ruined him as a player.

Poyet and big sam tells you everything you need to know. he must be doing something right as he's been at chelsea Liverpool. frank arnesen thought highly enough of him to take him to hamburg in i think a dof role and then his short spell at Sunderland plus if uou read brendans comments on him having previously worked with him thatll do for me.

17 Mar 2017 10:42:03
It said on BBC website that he was a scout for Chelsea and Hamburg. but a Sporting Director at Sunderland!? I have to admit looking at some of Sunderland's buys I have been a bit concerned but is Sporting Director the same as Head Scout?

Can't help but wonder how we'd be fairing against this exciting Monaco team, especially after the frenetic first tie where the slugged it out with City much of the game more or less as we did. Would like to see Dembele, Sinclair, Forrest, Roberts and Rogic see what they could do here. Anyone else think we could hold our own over two legs?

Believable0 Unbelievable6

15 Mar 2017 21:09:23
Not watching it mate, but not on Sundays showing. On top of our game we'd give a lot of teams a fright.

Agree1 Disagree3

15 Mar 2017 21:34:49
A lot more work, and at least 2 signings required before we could cope in my opinion.

Agree1 Disagree3

15 Mar 2017 21:58:32
In the first tie they played so well, with the ball sticking to their feet like glue so much it reminded me of Ronaldhinho and a few Brazilian teams past. I think it is precisely that which we are lacking - and the one-way-then-another ball player in the centre of the park who can also see a pass. Definitely a side we could aspire to compete with on like terms under BR.

Lee Congerton head of recrutment, anyone know anything about him?

Sunderland fans are laughing about it.

The way Sundays game was hyped beforehand did us no favours . We were in a lose lose situation. With the massive gulf between the sides anything less than a very convincing victory was always going to be seen as a failure.

When the game went into the last 15 mins and we were only 1 up the Sevvys took a bit of heart from this that they had avoided another trouncing and played with the attitude at least we've not been humped let's have a go, while we seemed to be a bit dejected only being 1 up and the rest as they say is history.

I actually turned to my mate with 10 mins to go when 1 up and said this feels like a defeat. Anyway we all know you get freak results every so often in football and Sunday was one of them.

Believable5 Unbelievable4

15 Mar 2017 20:14:31
We shouldn't need favours against anyone especially them.
Too many players didn't turn up
Lucky for us it wasn't a defeat, and it wasnt the cup

It felt like a defeat because the bhoys have done brilliantly this season, concentration and focus will take us to a trble and next seasons champions league.

I hope this disappointment will fire is up for the cup.

I agree stevie, we should be as low key as possible going into the semi final. Let everybody else do the talking, that mob are gonny get so pumped up and frothy because they gubbed us 1-1.

Agree0 Disagree2

15 Mar 2017 23:42:56
Bhampot their own support were saying before the game they would accept a 2 or 3 nil defeat so when they got to 80 mins only 1 down they were ecstatic. Wee teams always get a lift when they get to a stage in a game against the big teams when they know they've avoided a humping.

ED007 have you any info on this guy Congerton coming in as Head of Recruitment, hope he signs better players than the donkeys at Sunderland.

Believable0 Unbelievable3

{Ed007's Note - I don't know anything about him mate but I did notice him and Rodgers have known each other since they worked together at Chelsea which is a positive imo.}

15 Mar 2017 17:39:58
Seems like he's the one Rogers wanted so I agree with ed007 that it is a positive and i think it shows that the gaffer is in charge of all things football.

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed007's Note - I think it shows the exact opposite, Kev. The clue's in the job title.

http://www.celticfc.net/news/12242

'Lee will have responsibility for the management of the club's player recruitment function and our scouting operation, including our international scouting network.'

Do you think the manager decides where to send scouts etc?}

15 Mar 2017 19:29:23
The way I see it ed007 is that the gaffer is building HIS team
He is getting people HE trusts into the important jobs
Obviously he does choose where to send the scouts but he will be telling them the type of player he wants and it looks like he is getting the final say on who signs for the first team.
Could we say the same happened for Ronny?

Agree0 Disagree3

{Ed007's Note - This is a very important role and entails a lot more than just scouting for first team players. We'll be scouting players Brendan Rodgers will never even hear of let alone get to decide if they sign for us. Congerton will deal with recruitment of players at every level not just for the first team, Brendan Rodgers will have very little input on what 10 year old we are looking at bringing to the academy.
Congerton will work more closely with Chris McCart & Tommy McIntyre than he will Rodgers.

@timalloy - I would love to take the credit if it wins but I got it from a work colleague who's a Celtic fan who got it from his brother in law who's also a Celtic fan! That's why I hinted that I wasn't sure how reliable the info was. A few at work have piled on the each way double with Debuchet.

15 Mar 2017 18:17:00
@mallythetally - never got beat on Sunday from the all conquering invincibles? How embarrassing for Brenda that he couldn't get the better of the worst Rangers team in history and get a managerial lesson from our U20's coach?

The only bookies a was interested in was A high court judge's ruling that RFC where never "Demoted" or "Relegated". Liquidated i repeat Liquidated! Every sane person in the land knows they started afresh by applying to join Scotland's lowest tier. let's see and hear the media's version and of course the deady bears lies.

Bad day at the office uj every great team has them we'll see how pedro does against the invincibles.

15 Mar 2017 23:57:19
@gerryc - you need to read the full interview, not just the headlines.
As for celebrating a draw? A late equaliser in a derby game is always cause for celebrations or are you another who's still suffering from a passion bypass after 2 seasons of Bonnie Tyler?

P.S. the biggest celebration in history for a defeat is Celtic in Seville. We've had DVD's and theatre plays!

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Mar 2017 07:31:13
Because uj it was a celebration of football and people coning together unlike manchester uj should i go on.

It frustrates the hell did utd of me when I look at Leicesters run in this seasons champions league. I understand they won their league and that and definitely deserved their place in the competition after last seasons heroics but the route they have had to take to reach the quarters is incredible. Not having to qualify is fair enough as champs but they couldn't have hand picked an easier group in Porto, copenhagen and Brugge followed by another sweet draw in Sevilla. These are decent sides but let's be honest nothing to be frightened of.
Now this is where I make my point, every year we have to struggle through 6 nail biting matches to get to the groups alone and when we do every year we land the group of death. And the couple of times we have managed to progress we had landed the current CL champs in Milan, Barcelona who went on to win it that year and the juve a couple of years back.
I know it's all luck of the draw but we have never ever received a favourable draw in either the groups or the knockouts. One of these years who knows we might get a good run with these draws and who knows where it could take us just like we are seeing with Leicester who let's be honest have been pish this year.

As long as we're bottom seeds it'll keep on happening. We can only improve our coefficient by punching above our weight. Slowly but surely we'll get there.

Agree1 Disagree6

15 Mar 2017 12:21:17
For a team like Leicester to win the EPL against all the spending power ofCity, Chelsea etc. it's difficult to grudge them getting an easy draw. Their route to the CL was harder than ours.

15 Mar 2017 15:05:56
The pathetic and humiliating exploits of other Scottish clubs in recent years shows no sign of improving and indeed looks even worse with the gulf behind us in the spl means we represent a European backwater and suffer the ranking and disadvantages of playing in Scotland.
