job done, not outstanding but another step forward in ronnys steep learning curve, not afraid to make big decisions eg stokes Griffiths subs a good sign for me, have we the players for ronnys 433 favoured style? I don't think so but we've yet to see how watt, forrest and some others adapt to it but yhe front 3 tonight didn't look to have a lot of goals in it, have we time to try all the combos or do we bite the bullet and buy another striker? I hope mgregors performance tonight encourages ronny to have faith in more youths

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We probably don't have the players for a 433, I think we simply have too many average players - there isn't much between them, I would happily swap Stokes, Griffiths and Balde for 1 top striker. With regards your earlier reply mate about Stokes, I don't mind a bit of frustration, but Stokes body language is always terrible, I've never seen someone as torn faced in my life. He certainly doesn't do much for team morale, - you could understand it a little bit if he was brilliant, but he's very average. His level is SPL, like Griffiths and a few others in the team. Park/lennon/Lawwell have given Deila a squad of about 30 players, and I don't think 1 of them could go and play for a top top club,

Agree0 Disagree0

The only players in our squad worth talking about are Forster, Matthews, van Dijk, Lustig and Fisher. The rest are average at best or we haven't seen enough of them to make a proper assessment of their ability. I understand RD wants to run the rule over the squad at first hand, but if/when he discovers we lack strength in depth then I can see it being too late in the window to make an impact on the squad and no team has an overhaul of their squad in January. So we're stuck with the same junk for the next 12 months. I'm excited about RD's vision, but I still feel we could be in for much of the same while we have the same players on the pitch!

*** I missed out Johansen!

Stokes body language would suggest he ain't happy! never fancied the graft, poor attitude/time keeper, had to work his way back in to NL's good books cannot see RD/JC standing for it IMO! atb

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Did Stokes have to work his way back into Mjallby and Thompson's good books as well?}

15 Jul 2014 22:51:11
Honestly Ed a don't know and a don't care!

CL Qualifer and upon stage exit his attitude STANK!

Quite sure new broom will not tolerate that , atb

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Collins is now the most important assistant manager in the history of football, he's even helping out with discipline now. Is there no end to the man's talents?}

15 Jul 2014 22:51:30
Although pukki missed that chance I feel he offers more in the middle than stokes does and even then that's not a great lot cause I think the right wing role would maybe suit him more

Stokes I think has got very lazy under Lennon knowing he was first choice every week and I really hope this year we will add a "proper centre forward"

Agree0 Disagree0

Stokes is not good enough. Approx 19/20 european games played in his career with 2 goals. Should never have been offered new contract last time around

Agree0 Disagree0

It's back to the same old debate, stokes can't play up top alone which was proven in the first half of last year but play him with a strike partner then he is much better as is our displays. If ronny wants to play one up top then please sign a striker who can do that. Ps please stop going on about balde clearly ronny thinks as much of him as Lenny did(not a lot)

Hi Ed , JC will be fine if they have a BIG JUMBO mirror for himself @ parkhead other than that as you know a never wanted JC atb

Well done Calum McGregor! looks as though my gut feeling was right being an "industrious" middle three rather than any flair!

Opposing PL teams got a weapon against already by keeping the grass longer!

Will need to get creative type in for sure!

Loads of good points, but we really need a striker of some substance all our forwards are very similar . formation will take a bit of time to get used to hopefully get biton into the team sooner than later!

After watching that garbage I really hope that the board sees that we desperately need a striker.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Calm down. It's our first game back.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think apart from the goal the most exciting thing was the fly landing on stewarts hair n ear or wis I the oanly wan sad enuf 2 c it lol

No dissapointment at the end of t day we still won bhoys. ah bit rusty but playn ah team hof wiy fru ther season n we still ripped them minus t 18 goals

On another day could have been 7 or 8

Agree0 Disagree0

No I agree with the post, that was hard work watching that! As for Stokes - who does he think he is, his attitude/body language is an absolute disgrace. He didn't score a goal in Europe last year, and tonight he was completely rotten. We need a bit of real quality, not numbers, a couple of top players who would be first picks every week.

Agree0 Disagree0

Paul1, re stokes reaction will rd react to it and show he is the disciplinarian we've been told he is or will he see it as a players frustration

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't know what some people expect. Yes it wasn't a great game but we attacked away from home and dominated the game. Could and probably should have scored 5. As I said it was our first game back and we were a fair bit rusty but it's going to take time for the players to understand the new system. Whatever happened to faithful through and through. It was a win and another game to up the fitness. It takes time for the players to get their touch back. But I'm probably just wasting my breath, some folk just like a moan.

Agree0 Disagree0

You've just said it yourself cmcbhoy. We SHOULD have scored 5, but we didn't. Down to poor finishing. We severely lack quality up top, that's not something new, post-Hooper we've not had a decent finisher!

Agree0 Disagree0

I get what your'e saying HB but strikers are never top form the first competitive game back. let's give them a few games to see what happens before we go wasting money on another striker. We have 5 or 6 strikers on the books. I'm not saying we don't need one, just to give them a bit of time first.

Pre-season or not that was a pee-poor first half. There is no flair, power or pace from Celtic and apart from a couple of decent shots from Commons, we have not threatened - in fact the only time we hit the by-line and got in a decent cross took 42 minutes when Lustig made a run. I expected us to dominate as we have done but we need more urgency and purpose.
This is a pub team we are playing and our goalie has been the busier for goodness sake.
Stokes and Griffiths have been ineffective in the roles they have been given and with a second leg at Murrayfield! to ponder, we need to do a job here.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Not great, liked the passing from the back but the ambro (very)early slack pass could of been a goal against at a higher level. Chis has clearly been on the treadmill and looked sharp. They are defending bravely. Let some subs do some work to break it up
Rglen8

Agree0 Disagree0

Subs comment flawed. Sorry. Pukki miss.reaching for the asprin

Agree0 Disagree0

We were never pressed once in our own half. Not even in the first 3rd. Our front three have been playing far to wide apart. They are an amateur team remember. Above everthing i'm glad henderon got our goal tonight. He has been positive throughout pre season.

second half a lot lot better. derk looked good when he came on and mc gregor certainly kicked on as the game went on. never looked out of place

looking forward to see what way we line up in second game

Did you actually watch the game?

Mcgregor even who I thot played ok . It was our first game with a lot of passing not a lot of penetration but that should come with sharpness.pretty boring game over all but we got the result hail hail

Oohh christ and st paul an a tanden. I was in the pi$$er for the goal. Flat eruption. We had the songs on as well. Shame on me :0

What's everyone making of the first half? I think we need to press at a higher tempo as it is 2 relaxed for my liking I'd like izzy getting up wing more and using pace down left as we seem to be taking everything down the right.

To Hamiltonbhoy and DN30 re. loans you both make very good points but it is just my opinion that we or any big club for that matter should not deal in loan signings. I don't see the long term benefit.Although fair enough if the boy comes in and does a job great but what then he goes back to his parent club or his price inflates and weare back where we started. Anyway that's my opinion and you know the old saying their just like persons everybody has one. Sorry for the late reply haven't been on for while.

Davie c

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I can understand your point of view and where you're coming from, the way to avoid that is putting an option to buy, fixed fee or even first refusal clause in on the loan deal which avoids that situation.

We all know PL is a man who doesn't like to part with money, so you could bet your bottom dollar that he'd have something written in to any loan moves.

Anyway, hopefully we can take a few off this mob tonight with a few different faces in the squad rather than the usual suspects of last season. COYBIG!

Agree0 Disagree0

What about Fraser Forster good loan with view to permanent signing, well done celtic. West brom weren't complaining with lukaku nor Everton.it all depends on wether they are going to be squad players or guaranteed starters as too them being good for us as we don't need any more squad players we need starters.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Apart from Forster, what about loans like Kamenar, Fedor, El Kaddourri, Brozek, Lassad, Miku and Gershon? Millions of £s in loan fees, agent fees, wages, insurance, housing etc all down the drain.}

As I said squad players don't work if their not better than what you have don't take them. If the manager isn't going to give them a proper run of games then why did we sign them?

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2014 22:26:42
I don't see the probs with loaning a player although the loan to buy is the way to go as you can pull out if in the end he's pish . As an Everton/ Celtic fan we did some good business in the loan market. Lukaku, Barry and Delefou. They can make your season while youth progress, and if you have agreed a fee you can buy. It seems Mc Gregor has benefitted from his loan.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hoping we come away with a good result tonight, still wary though as even although they are limited opposition we are still settling under a new coach which can take time. Although pre season games are for fitness we haven't looks great but maybe the competitive edge will be there tonight.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I am looking forward to tonights game mate think we will win with a bit to spare. Will be interesting to see how we set up and who starts a few of the younger boys have impressed in pre season wonder if they will get a chance tonight.

Agree0 Disagree0

We should win mate but they are fully fit and half way through their Season. We will c what sort of balls RD has by his selection tonight doesn't need to wholesale changes but maybe mcgregor / mcgeough/ Henderson! One or two of them would bring some freshness rather than derk.

Agree0 Disagree0

There's two ways RD could go. A familiar first team squad from last season, in hope of taking four or five off them then fielding the fringe players + youngsters next week; or he could play a couple of young lads over both legs, for example: Henderson, McGeouch, McGregor, Atajic, etc!

Looks as though from today's pics that commons has lost a bit of weight through the summer, any idea Ed why he has not been dealt a new contract especially as he appears so keen to commit?

Given izzy and lustig were signed up minus a new man in charge seems odd that we would not want to sign up our POTY, Scotland's POTY, and top goal scorer? atb jb7

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Apparently he's next in line and has said in the paper today he wants to commit his future to Celtic, so hopefully see somthing on this soon

Agree0 Disagree0

Jamiebhoy how do we know that Commons hasn't been offered a deal,
Maybe Commons is more difficult to please than Izzy and Efe . The Celtic Board remains confidential in all transfer dealings and so we don't know the Celtic side of the story .

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Commons has said himself there's been no talks. When I said about Leicester's interest at the start of June I was told he had turned down the initial offer from CFC. Remember what happened with Samaras.}

15 Jul 2014 10:00:14
Interesting to read RD's comments that he's unhappy we need to play three qualifiers to reach the Group Stages and believes there should be more emphasis on the club's coefficient than the countries as we're being dragged down by others!

Also seen this morning that Commons wants to finish his career at Celtic?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Rd is quite right to express his thoughts on celtic having to play three qualifiers in an attempt to get to the group stage of the champions league.why should the champions of any league have to qualify, IMO the teams that finish second, third, and fourth should be playing each other to gain entry into the tournament.it won't be long till it's invitation only into Uefa, s flagship tournament and it will be teams who are spending 15, 20, etc millions on players who will get the nod .the most unfair cup competition in operation.killy.
