Brendan has done brilliantly well. But I think his tactics will always be flawed in Europe history tells you that defensively minded teams that counter attack win. Unless your a Real, Barcelona, Ajax or us circa 67 in our pomp. We need to back Brendan as I think he will deliver 10 but we have struggled in Europe.

AEK have only spent 700 k on their biggest transfer but they have access to a wider marked PAOK put our old foes Basil out hammered them. The Greek gods never shined on our team issues with our players whether injured or not being replaced killed our chances keep faith and don't feed the hype and shambles that is Glasgow Rangers. HH.

You are right about something powder finger. Brendan Rodgers is tactically nieve when playing in Europe! You can't play European sides the same way you play against Ross County. It doesn't work, something he fails to grasp.

Don't you think that the negativity is similar to when we were 3 league wins under wee Gordon. We actually had a really good team then Negativity killed tbat team they were boring to watch we spend no money all the bull that's going on now were we winning The custodians at Celtic will pull is through this HH Amigo.

Why not on it a blessing in disguise as brendan wouldn't get any of the 40 million anyway.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Aug 2018 15:04:41
I remember getting abuse for saying the same about Rodgers when we were undefeated.

Far too open at the back, to play that tactic u need your defence to be pretty much your best and most dominant players.

unless you have Messi, and the board should have recognised and made they positions a priority.

instead we have jack hendry and tbh we would be as well playing biton there.

16 Aug 2018 20:09:54
Button got murdered when we played him there.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Aug 2018 20:58:20
Brendan has been accused of been too open at the back . Maybe true about games in the past but on Tuesday night we had 8 men in the box and only 1 AEK player when we conceded first goal . We had 9or 10 players in box when we gave up the 2nd goal . So anyone talking about B R team loose at the back are talking historically which might be interesting but not relevant.

ED007 have you heard anything on Eduard's injury? Hope not too serious.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Rodgers said he had picked up a knock against Hearts so it doesn't sound too serious.}

15 Aug 2018 21:18:04
Boyata, Compper, Bitton, Alan, Hendry, DDV, Benyu, Alan, Hayes, Christie. there's 10 that should be out the door. Folk say Hendry will come good mabe if him and Ajer had 1 or 2 quality proven Centre Half's to play alongside . BR and the Board surely have seen our Defence is a shambles and needs sorted ASAP.

Whatever happened to Benyu? Seemed light-weight but energetic and clever when he first showed up.

I think Brendan likes Hendry, although when he plays we rarely win, more than just a coincidence.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 23:54:11
Well Boyata has to go, don't think there is any way back for him, he will find out the grass isn't always greener, Commper, Biton, have to go, for different reasons, Allan, if he wants to go, I would let him, but I would have him in the team before Rogic, Henry, must be kept, he has potential, and I think he will fulfill it, Hayes keep, he is a good squad player, Christie is going to be a top, top player, keep him.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 20:51:14
Over the 2 legs we were the better team but our defence is bottom third spl level so the outcome was always going to be this without investment!

Rodgers just looks fed up. Lustig has collapsed, hendry too young and shouldn't be near a celtic first team. Same with joso. Boyata is a disgrace to the human race. We need a bobo at the back. Proper no nonsense. Hopefully will all be a bit better in the coming weeks i. e transfers or i think rodgers could!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

15 Aug 2018 21:08:29
Hendry's not too young Bhoyo he's 23. Boyata will never play for us again, if he does there will be a riot, totally unforgivable. I'm sure there will be at least a couple in and a couple out before end of window .

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 21:29:13
If there was any justice in football no club would go near Boyata after his antics. A player who won't play at one club could quite easily not play at his next club if he doesn't get his way over everything.
Playing with a lot of big egos at the World cup seems to have given him a big ego.
He should realise that without the help of Celtic and the coaching staff who kept faith in him, he would never have got to the World cup in the first place.
He is the typical football mercenary who Celtic will be well rid of.

Boyata has maybe a dozen good games for us in his time at celtic yet he thinks he is a world beater I for one hope he goes to sevilla they won't ever do anything with him in the team and can see them getting hammered off of Barcelona and real then see where he ends up. So rubbishty lower league club.

cannot watch the post-match post mortem or interviews. Anybody and their dog could see the frailties and basic errors that cost us.
Always tried to stay positive and thankful for what we have achieved in our long history and recent years, but the team are not even doing the simple things correctly.
We attack and defend as a team, but why do players not match runners, pick up spare men, close down, mark, tackle, and block instead of ball watching, finger pointing and shrugging shoulders?

The first few games of the season have shown lapses costing cheap goals in games and a reduction in the goal chances we are creating and scoring shows them up even more and costs us £millions.

Unfortunately there have been other contributory factors with transfer targets missed and a lack of cohesion between manager and board leaving us short of class and in key areas on top of more injuries to strikers and a sulky Belgian refusing to play.
BR has maintained all along that we always need to improve, however not one improvement has been made and in the case of Hendry, maybe the opposite? Not that I'm singling him out as there were a few huffers and puffers out there that made little or no difference.

All in all a great time for our detractors and haters, brought on by our own faults, failings and a hesitancy from Board room to training ground and from Glesga to Greece. I think a huge clear the air is required between BR and Board followed by a clear-out of those not good enough to wear the jersey in order to maintain domestic dominance, have a run in the Thursday Cup and beyond. Lessons have to be learned from this summer - from all concerned - but I won;t hold ma breath and as for Boyata he needs to get tae F.

We shouldn't accept the excuse of not buying players now that were in the EL. Get players in now and in the january window with an eye on next seasons qualifiers. Get them bedded in. Leaving it late or leaving it alltogether like this time has cost us. The time to rebuild our squad is now, more than ever.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

15 Aug 2018 20:42:56
I think everyone just jumping on the band wagon of hating on Hendry. What did he actually do wrong in that game? Lustig is the real problem on that wing. 2 goals over the 2 legs he cost us by failing to block 2 crosses. Blatantly obvious the defence needs work. A number 10 is also essential. If lawwell sits there banking this cash for this stupid hotel. The fans matter, the players matter and our manager matters. If we don't build to challenge we will fail once again, we won't build from strength and will be caught.

Not been on for a while due to operation. Last night the defence which has been poor for years central defence has been a problem we have not solved as we have no leader at the back who takes control and even though l have a lot of time for John Kennedy he is our coach and has been involved with the defence since becoming a coach we make same mistake game after game when we get out muscled when teams have a physical presence up front it needs sorting quickly but we have left it late yet again. Now onto John McGinn we paid about 2.8 million for an unknown in Kouassi yet because he is from the Celtic family and plays in Scotland we tried to get him on the cheap we should have made the offer of 3 million to Hibs and made it public and then see what would have happened as all other clubs turn players heads.

But you can't all agree because let's face it everyone at the club has to be blamed here there is NO I in team once we start to blame individual people that's is when we stop being a team so let's get all behind the team move on working together to pull through this bad start because the only way to get out of this is by working as a team HH.

. recruitment policy needs looked at . since lenny 81 players in and over two thirds of which have been biscuit tin crap. we need to stop buying cheap quantity over quality . we need to buy at a higher level. both monetary and skillwise we need to look at changeing our wage structure upwards somewhat . if we are to have a chief scout why don't we identify the most successful one/ s and make a transfer bid for him / them. it's clear something needs doing.

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 20:39:25
Agree, BR has done exactly what he said he wouldn’t t do- buy squad players. Only 2 of his signings started last night (would have been 1 if Boyata don’t take huff) and that is not great for 5 transfers windows. Some loss of form (SS) some not good enough (Kouassi, Hayes, Gamboa, Comper) some injury prone (MD, OE? ) but even new recruits like Morgan won’t really do. Is he any better than our young fringe players? This window I would be happy with one quality CB. Surely we can find someone who can stay fit, not get sent off regularly and knows how to defend? Erik was as close as we had to this.

Doudt it the pitch was started last season so can't see how that's in the playing budget.

Eduardo maybe cost Celtic 9m if all the add ons are hit. Champion league qualification, Eddie making French national squa ECT. So story doesn't add up.

Even if it was true he would have had enough to buy McGinn which we all know didn't happen.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 20:03:23
He got £9m for Edouard but the board clawed £8.5m for Armstrong and Sviatchenko and saved a wage so he has actually spent nothing .

THink it's safe to assume 99.9% of fans are hugely disappointed with the result last night. For me what's needed now is signings made in the right area immediately mainly centre half and RB positions. Brendan is already on record as saying we're not as strong as last season and last night again questioning our defence. If our coaching staff can't get they guys to eradicate these constant mistakes then better quality needs brought in. The fans will stick by the team and club as a whole but at the same time these same fans deserve a team on the pitch that have a certain level of quality and right now our defence are letting us down massively.

Does anyone have the time to show all of Ronnie's signings and all of Rodgers signings?

The reason - Rodgers is taking flak and rightly so for his signings but I'm sure Ronnie took pelters for his signings also.

Is the case the scouting is poor, Lawwell is too involved or managers that can't pick a player?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

15 Aug 2018 19:55:00
I have googled the last three managers signings (BR, RD and NL) and it's very fair to say that including loans, there are many more flops than successes over the past 6 years or so.
We tended to often wait until the end of windows and maybe panic a bit with what was left and there have been quite a few disasters.
NL made 45 signings in total and Griffiths, Rogic, Biton and Lustig are still there - another one 'Izzy' has been re-signed.
RD made 23 signings and Ajer, Simunovic, Allen, Christie, Gordon and the one called Boyata are still registered today.
BR has made 16 signings so far - including the latest big Eddy.
There are far too many flops to list - although there have been some good signings along the way, but 84 have been brought in at some stage in past six years or so. Have a look guys.

I hope the club take a sensible approach when pricing 3 match packages for EL if we get there and don't try pricing them up near CL level. £60 for 3 matches would be a good gesture and would probably stick 15 to 20 thousand on the gate. I'm not holding my breath tho.

We lost goals from defensive mistakes no denying that. Mistakes at the back have been our Achilles heel for so long now in Europe. Being positive away from home in Europe we dictated the majority of play and on another night we’re through. It seems to be overlooked how young this team actually is already back to back treble winners and I’m confident of another. These bhoys will only get better with experience we’re at the start of a new season and yes we’re disappointed but let’s get behind them there will be more to cheer about than moan about 🍀.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

15 Aug 2018 20:34:57
We will win another treble if we can get the Unity Back with in club . Since BR made his stupid public remark we have lost two and drawn one . Brendan may or may not have plenty of reason to be very disappointed with PL dithering, however we should have sorted the matter privately, as now it seems to me we are split up and down the club and players probably feel part of split .
We will win nothing until we are back as one.

When is Lawell going to come out and let the supporters know what the club have planned with regards to signings?

Another point sevco fans sniggering at work saying Celtic are in turmoil and loving every minute of it. I cannot wait until we play them and put them in their place which will be 3rd or 4th in the league.

Lawwell has never revealed what transfers the club has planned and I doubt he ever will.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 20:46:12
It's certainly not Lawwell's role to discus forthcoming transfers . PL 's job is to complete deals for players that he has been asked to buy . His questioning and bargaining would probably regarded as one of his strong points . In the McGinn case he acted in the way almost every fan that posted on forums was advising and that was to hold back until January and sign John as free agent from ist June . This didn't work out and all those fans that were urging to wait are now on PL back and want him out.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 21:31:02
Kev and Chris I’m no talking about him revealing who we are in for and that sort. I am talking about him saying what if any of a warchest we have to spend on new players coming into improve the side.

A wee bit worrying for me is our inability to see problems right away and fix them - or even switch things around when we struggle.
BR was always quick to make a change in shape or personnel if things weren't going our way; but our last three games have seen us get into difficulty or have players under-performing and wait until too late.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 20:51:27

Are a lot of them Rodgers signings?, or were they bought for him? .
I'm not sure exactly how the system works in regards to buying players, but if you take Compper for example he gets one game then he is never seen again. That doesn't look to me like a player that the manager wanted.
On a seperate point. The Hamilton match has been switched to the Sunday. I know that Thursdays is the night for the Europa league but considering how close we are to the Hamilton match couldn't the first leg of the qualifier be played on the Tuesday or Wednesday? . I have seen other Europa League games been played on these nights. Sevco played one of their qualifiers on a Tuesday night so it can obviously be done.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 16:28:37
Gerryc -

If they aren't Rodgers signings why did he say in January the board delivered everything he wanted? Compper and Hendry were signed in the Jan window. If we had signed 2 better CBs instead of them we would have qualified.

So yeah Rodgers is part of the reason we got knocked out and has to take his share of the blame.

Agree3 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 18:07:02
Doesn't he highlight what he needs or wants and the buck lies with Scouts/ Congerton/ Lawwell to deliver that?

And if he had got the players he wanted at the start of the summer we might still be in cl. guys like Hendry hayes gamboa were to beef up squad but how many pressers has he done and mentioned quality it's simple the board have not delivered.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 20:58:04
In February he was as happy as a bug in a rug . How could P L and the Board annoy him so much, in such a short time . Surely if he could be so happy after the Jan window there must have been a non transfer disagreement to put them at each other in August.

Only 4 have been a success. moussa, eddy, N'tcham, sinclair and maybe Bains. that's not really good enough.

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 15:21:22
out of all his “failure signings “ only Kouassi and hendryl cost over a million . I would look at it that when you are going to buy basement buys the chances are they are not going to work out. Just maybe that’s why he said he only wanted quality for a few positions. He probably took a punt on Hendry as he is fast and it’s one of the things modern centre backs need now, although I never wanted him . So if look at it that maybe Kouassi is the only bad signing for decent money. When you are scraping around the bottom of the barrel, you are more than likely going to pick up crap.

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 17:38:17
Maybe the board are looking at the money already paid out plus increase in wages and saying enough is enough. If that's the case BR may give it one more year, however we have not been at our best for months. From january till the end of the sesson in all competitions we won 14 out of 23 games. That was not great. On Tuesday only 2 BR signings started the game. Hendry and N'tcham. I know Dembele and Eddy were injured so 4 would have started but BR has bought 17 players since he joined so where are the other 13? We have spent £25mill on transfer fees alone and only 2 players out of that £25mill start. The rest were RD signings or players at club before he took over. These are not great stats. He has very much improved players who were there but 17 signed who by and large are not in contention for a starting slot!

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 18:14:18
So what are you saying you don't think BR is the man to take us forward?
I for one think he is But saying that I would love to see who was on his wish list for the opening of this window I can't beleave he did not have some defenders on there And if so its the boards fault and if not then its BRs.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 21:00:58
Tonybhoy not saying BR should not take us forward. Facts are facts. Spent £25mill. Bought 17 players. Now if he had not bought Eddy its 16 players for £16mill, so paying peanuts you know what you get. Therein lies a potential problem. Not enough quality. The other fact, winning 14 out of 23 games. Do you think that's good or not? Now answer your own question.

Every time you take a punt on a player, it costs the club money, . These all build up and players that are punted in , have to be judged quickly and those not making it moved on . Brendan said when he came he liked a small squad, but our ist team squad is too full of players we don't need or use.

Olivier Kapo
Holmber Fridjohnson
Steven Mouyokolo
Mo Bangura
Kazim Richards
Carlton Cole
Tyler Blackett
Stefan Scepovic
Teemu Pukki
Amido Balde
Mubarak Wakaso
Jo Inge Berget
Alexandar Tonev

Every post seems to go on about spending to bring in quality if there was a bottomless pit I would get that but it’s not. Our market is a hit n miss one for every Edouard or Dembele there’s a Pukki or bangura. I would love to hear who some think we are meant to bring in. Rodgers hit the nail on the head regarding Hendry the bhoy can play but lacks experience but only one way he’s going to get it. I can live with projects as long as there’s an end product and hope to see Hendry/ Ajer reaching the top no reason why they can’t. Let’s be honest goals we concede are stupid mistakes not cos these players are bad.
I’m hurting from last night not because of lack of investment but because we should’ve beaten that mob over 2 legs and not because I want the holy grail of champs league I just hate seeing us getting beat.
We will win the league again at a canter why? Simple we’re the best in Scotland anyone saying otherwise is deluded. Europa who knows but looking forward to it.

3 players would definitely sort this mess out. 2 solid no nonsense centre half’s and a better right back. It always seems that the board refuse to get players in until our European fates decided. It was always going to be harder qualifying this year with the extra round and better quality we could draw yet we go in even weaker than last season. I said last week in a post that we could be using our new 2million pounds lighting system for Livingston or Kilmarnock if we aren’t careful. In my opinion I go to watch Celtic, the team play, not a light show or a new hotel, even Celtic way. What’s people’s opnions here, would they prefer a better team or better experience? I know what I’d prefer.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 12:00:10
Oh well Europa league here we come (hopefully) .

I’m okay with playing in the Europa, in fact I would probably prefer to see us play there since we will be a lot more competitive. I don’t care about the money we have, I’d rather see us winning games.

Despite that, there’s huge disappointment around last night. Because we should have hammered them.

It seems the defence has taken the blame again, even from Rodgers. I’m not so convinced. Yes we conceded poor goals. But how on earth are we only scoring 2 goals over 2 legs? We should be taking 3 or 4 off them at home and then another 1 or 2 away.

So who is to blame? It seems the board is getting a lot of stick. Again I’m not sure on that one. We should be beating teams like that with the team we had out. It’s not like AEK are big spenders.

It’s hard to put blame on a guy that’s won us a double treble and qualified for the CL twice in a row. I do feel Rodgers has some part to play. If we played both legs the way we played the last half an hour we would have went through comfortably. But Rodgers stuck with the same style and it was all too slow and indirect. How many corners did we have last night? Does Rodgers ever practise these in training?

It also came down to our poor recruitment. We have players like ntcham, Tierney, Edouard and dembele, they are our superstars who we know are capable of playing at a higher level. But we’re being let down by players like Forrest, Gordon, Lustig possibly even rogic who look out of place at this level.

Why hasn’t Rodgers identified these players to be replaced? Or has he?

Over two legs I do feel it was the players fault. Although there wasn’t enough directness in our play, Rodgers still set the team up well enough that we had the majority of the ball and spent most of it round their box. That’s where a good AM and RW could have made a difference.

The positives for me-
I thought Hendry played well last night and I think these games will help him improve.
Sinclair scoring a great goal will hopefully give him a confidence boost, would love to see him get in the box more.
Rodgers will hopefully recognise that going direct can work as well.

Sorry for the length, it’s not all bad guys. Looking forward to seeing what we can do in the Europa.

I think Celtic and Brendan handled boyata v poorly as he clearly didn't want to sign a new contract so he should have been moved on and I'm not condoning his actions. I hope Celtic deal with players much quicker than we currently do with players in last year of contracts because this is becoming a recurring issue.

Just for some info AEK signed their number 10 for 1.8 million euros in the Summer. The number 4 can’t get a game for Bologna so they sent him out on loan.
The number 17 cost them €200k.

All of these would improve our squad.

Melling at Rosenborg looked good in both games against us. Fair enough he would probably play second fiddle to KT but surely a better option than Izzy. 2 of the Astana players looked decent against us last season, Twumasi and Kabananga. Tavares and Ibraimi looked decent against us for Maribor even further back that that. Zyro at Legia.

To me these are the types of players we should be scouting.

There is thousands of players in europe alone that can be brought in it as i said using a good scouting network to scource these players. You disagree. Kev

What does it matter if it is teams that we beat?

So in your warped logic all the players are of equal standing as no player can be better than his teams standard? So Tommy Johnson was just as good a player as Larsson as they were in the same squad? David Fernandez as good as Sutton? Ambrose as good as VVD?

Every single one of those players I mentioned would have improved our team at the time regardless if we knocked them out or not.

Look at Sevco. Played against a left back they clearly rated and within a week they had him signed up.

I think my suggestion is better than the attitude that there is no point in signing anyone as everyone is too expensive.

Everyone has dissected last nights game, lambasted the Board and discussed the teams shortcomings and where we have AGAIN failed to strengthen in key areas.
Many, many valid observations and points have been written - so I won't enlarge on them.
My biggest worry, is we have won only one, of our last five games and that is a crisis at any club, never mind the double treble winners and best team in Scotland.
This is by far the worst period of results/ performances under BR so far and it not only means no CL (prestige or cash) , but it gives optimism and encouragement to rivals, detractors and snipers and EVERYONE at Celtic Park needs to screw the nut, have a long look in the mirror and pull in the same direction to sort this out.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

15 Aug 2018 12:20:31
Once a Bhoy, good post. If you go back to January last year and add those results into this year, our performances and points gained is pretty poor. We have continued this season the same way we were going from last season, and that was backwards. Yes we won the Scottish cup but over the last 10 SPL games we didn’t score goals and dropped a lot of points compared to the year before.

However, what’s done is done. We lost last night and teams do lose. It’s dissapointing but we have to move on. Here is the concern. Celtic’s wage structure is much higher now under BR than it was before he got here. If you look at last seasons accounts and now take out the £25mill CL cash, this season Celtic will post a loss, unless we have a very deep run in Europa. I am assuming we get £7mill for Boyata, who has to go, and maybe another £2mill from other sales. However that money and maybe more needs to go into the team. PL does not want to post a loss, so, does he release any more funds for BR? I have no idea if Hendry, Hayes, Morgan etc were wanted by BR or not. They however are average SPL players. So has BR been handcuffed all this time by players being bought for him, or is his recruitment poor? Kouassi is another we paid £3mill for and is no where near the player we thought we were buying. I think that’s a sore point for PL. we maybe spend £3mill and the player still does not make it. Having seen what players BR has brought in or the club has brought in, is there a reluctance from PL to commit additional funds? We are about to find out.

The talk of waiting till the EPL window closes to allow us to buy is totally flawed. That was never a strategy. That was Celtic fans finding a reason as to why we had not brought in players upto now. Lustig has gone. Ajar and Hendry are still very young. Comper will never play a part, another BR signing. (who knows) . A massive risk was taken with Boyata, not getting him signed up before World Cup. He should have been punted as soon as he came back and the money used to bring in a competent CB, another mistake. McGinn, another error. Griffiths is no where near what he was, due probably to lack of game time. Sinclair off the boil but better last night. Rogic, who I have championed on here before, well what can I say. Not showed up this season. (Rogic get the finger out as I have a bet with Kev83) . So all is not well in Paradise. We also need to get more out of what we already have, so the players need to step up.

What we need to do and this is critical to the rest of the season. PL must release significant funds. BR needs to get the recruitment right. No more projects, buy players that can make a difference. We need a deep run in Europa, to do that we need players and the right players. We need to go on and win, not draw, but win the next 10 games, including Europa qualifiers and the Rangers game which is now massive. An for those who come on and say Rangers or Hearts are not a problem, go away. Hearts were not a problem, AEK were not a problem, really? The players never turned up on both AEK games. The refusal to try and carry the ball past the opposing player and wanting to take the option to pass it back then to the side is always going slow is down and cause our own problem. That is something for BR to resolve, but the players have not turned up for the last part of last season or this season so far, so Rangers and are a danger. We are not playing well enough to dismiss anyone. We give them 3 points and we give them momentum, something we are lacking right now.

The CL is done for this season, but if we take action as a club and BR and the players get on with it, we can still have a great season, but it starts today. Brendan, we know you are frustrated about lack of activity but leave it out now, we all know. PL, are you going to make matters better or worse.

Agree1 Disagree0

The waiting for the English window to close wasn’t just flawed it was disastrous. We were out before anybsigning from that, even if we bought any, wouldn’t have been able to help. Anybody who peddled that as a good thing really need to wake up and realise we need players in early or this happens.

Be interesting to see also these great more affordable players coming in now from the source that all those cited as the way forward actually turning up.

That’s not our market and to think it was shows a lack of grasp of reality. We can’t match wages never mind the inflated fees. Delusional.

Let's play the Blame Game

Peter Lawwell ABSOLUTELY to blame.
When he sticks to sponsorship negotiations he is top class.
When he gets involved in the football side (ala HE appointed Delia) he is useless.
But important factor, it is NOT in Lawwell's interest to spend money, he gets a £1m annual bonus as long as Celtic have a decent bank balance.
But Peter, YOU have just cost Celtic circa £30m I hope they dock your bonus.
Lee Congleton WHO? I hear you ask, an anonymous man, who is a pal of Rodgers. Head of Recruitment, what fekin recruitment? The Sunderland fans were dancing in the street when he came to Celtic, says it all.
Dermot Desmond. Yes our main shareholder, a billionaire but as tight as drum. He has given Lawwell too much power on the transfer side of things and the club is paying the price.
John Kennedy. By all accounts a thoroughly nice guy, and he has gained lots of sympathy for his career ending injury, but he is NOT A GOOD DEFENSIVE COACH, since he got that role our defence has been abysmal. Keep him at the club, but NOT as a coach.
Brendan Rodgers. Yes SAINT BRENDAN, he picks the team out on the park and must see the what we the fans see, that Lustig sadly does not have the legs anymore to play right back, Simonovic a donkey with not talent. I feel sorry for young Hendry he should be at right back. Boyata, a snake in the grass, who now thinks he is better than what he is. Get rid. Hayes, not Celtic class. Commper a fekin JOKE. Kouassi, again not Celtic class.
I could go on but you get the picture, there are so many people to blame but it is time for the Lawwell and the board to back Rodgers with decent signings, and for Rodgers to get back to what he is good at Coaching, and leave the other stuff to more qualified people.

15 Aug 2018 11:44:31
Unfortunately, John Kennedy is not a 'defensive coach' and having his career cut so short denied him many years of experience that a coach could probably draw on. Anyway; this Congerton guy seems an even bigger chancer than that previous Park fella and must be removed or replaced if we are to gain any credibility and respect in transfer recruitment.
If BR himself, has final say then his judgement also, has to be scrutinised when you look at Hayes, Commper, Gamboa, Benyu, Eboue and even Musonda who have come up short of standards required.
Lawell is a great businessman but the business always comes first, well before the football team in his eyes and profit or personal bonuses seem to be his priority over improving the team.
Unfortunately, this concoction of bad elements have conspired to put us in this mess and it needs, intelligence, common sense and much more positive actions than we are seeing to fix it.

Reading some of the posts down the page many are mentioning spending money and get back challenging in CL. Those days are gone, we don't have the free income i. e either a sugar daddy to throw obscene amounts of cash at us or a tv deal to throw similar at us. If we spent every penny we have on transfers it wouldn't make a huge difference to the success we're currently having, ok we might win the league by 30 points instead of 15. I find it incredible that people think it's that simple to compete with the massive spending sides we are paupers when it comes to CL level. Playing devils advocate here just say we spent 30 or 40 million last month, a fortune in our world but not a lot in today's game and failed to qualify for CL, where does that leave us? those players still have to be paid their 50 grand a week for beating Dundee, StMirren, Livi etc for remainder of season. Yeah I want a few signings in but to talk of trying to compete at CL level is nonsense and dissing the Europa league as a crap tournament is baffling, this is where we belong at the moment whether we like it or not.

Stevie we spent that kind of cash on transfers and wages when Martin O'Neill was manager and we got to a European final. It's ambition. Spend and reap the rewards on and off the park.

To be honest Stevie l agree with you that Celtic can't spend stupid money on players. We don't have that kind of finance to buy the very top u need to compete against the top sides. However l do think we should be able to get players at a better standard then what's there at the min especially in the defence. I said in last year's champions league that we are simple making up the numbers like most teams in pot 3 and 4. We will still need players in especially the defence which gives up goals to even the poorest side in the Scotland. Apologies if l am wrong but l think Celtic have only had one clean sheet in the last 5 matches. The Europa league has some serious sides in it and will be a serious test if we can qualify for the group stages.

Sutton

Lennon for 6 million now a days?

Not a chance.

A bhoy out of psg reserves costs 9 million.

Stevie agree with what’s been said, although with better scouting we wouldn’t need £40 million and we could at least put up a better showing. To look at some good buying over the years Lubo, Henrik, mjallby, Agatha, VVD, Wanyama, Forster, Hooper, Petrov, Ledley, Matthews, mulgrew, etc there's > 10 players and all for less than £20m and I think most would agree we would get a few results.

It’s not what we spend eg Raphael £5m, it’s who.

Man City, PSG, Man Utd etc all spent £100s millions and still not got success in Europe so it’s not the route to go down.

Another point, BR seemed to have full control of signings with Congerton. Perhaps with so many BR players not playing the board have got involved. From DDV, Gambia, Comper, Benyu, etc a lot has been spent on wages for what reason? Maybe it’s as Mourinho says managers are now just head coaches.

Get the scouts to earn their corn.

We are all in the same market for players.

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 12:43:28
Ter 161 both VVD and Victor were not quality experienced champions league players.

And that is what people like Stan are calling for.
They don't want under a million 20 year old players that are prospects.
They don't want 22 year old 3 million pound gambles that haven't won anything and are inexperienced

They want players that have been there and done it.

We would never have had van djyk or big Victor if some of the fans on here were incharge.

We are not asking for £20mill players but over the last 18 months we have not strengthened at the back. We are weaker than last season as a whole but when a poster mentions that you argue we are stronger than last year because players have improved? Who is better than last year? We need additions.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 21:16:40
Stan, To spend the equivalent nowadays to get that quality of player like Sutton, Hartson, Thompson and Lennon you would be looking at over 100 million . Not mentioning O'Neil inheriting Larsson.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 10:37:20
That was a sore one last night. Maybe a wake up call. We all acknowledge the champions league setup is a shambles it's all about the top 4 leagues making more money. But avoiding excuses we should of beat that mob last night. That was a disgraceful attempt. I think tactically we were slow at adjusting. Sinclair on 10 minutes earlier with moussa and it might have been a different story. My concern was how come the team could defend in the last 20 minutes but struggled for the first 70. Does it only matter when we have 20 mins left. I think a different approach might of been a better answer.

Now down to players. Centre backs Simonovic isn't good enough, hendry, I'd give a season in and out of the team gage his development. I agree he lacks ATM but he has the tool to be good just lacks experience. Right back I don't know if lustig could move into centre back but as a right back he's done. He offers nothing. Absolutely nothing if anything he's just a body on a pitch. That is it. Tierney is outstanding but I'm now concerned his pressing is causing more issues than good. Our best defender is up the park leaving the other 3 clowns at the back.

4leaf as I said before I love Lustig he’s got the Celtic big and he’s been a good servant but last night your bang on, he was just a body in the park. I thought put Gambia on and push Lustig to ch, but does he have it to be winnin the first ball against big battering Rams, getting to balls in behind, I’m not sure. SPL level no issue Europe not good enough.

Good point about Tierney but if you look at where the goals came from both Lustigs side and at home Lustigs side. Tierney very rarely gets caught up the park and his work rate attacking and defending is unbelievable. However now you’ve said it I will be keeping a close eye on it and report back to Brendan 😂.

I agree magicpole, our team has got worse and worse over the last two decades. Rodgers came in and it looked as though we may be taking a different approach and for the first two seasons it's seemed well. Yes the champions league qualifiers have always been tough but I felt Rodgers was supported enough to get us through them. However, this summer it has been more along the lines of get on with the job and once your through we may talk transfers. This is regressive attitude. You strengthen when your in power to strengthen. Had we another centre back another right back and explosive midfielder (even if it was a bench player to change a game) we would have made it through. The gamble, I recon would of cost the club £17 million for the quality required of 3 decent players plus the £9 million for Edouard. That is a large net spend of £26 million on transfers. The champions league group stage automatically nets you around £40million. The last two season the £30 million prize. The renewal of sponsorship, the sale of top players. The season ticket sales and merchandise. Celtic parks hosting events. The money is there.

That gamble on those player a could of been what pushed us that extra distance. And Scottish football would benefit as it would be the next jump for them financially as well. But for some reason the money men don't find it worth the gamble and we've got a team which I honestly don't think is any better than Strachan and Lennon's early team at the moment.

I see posts below saying Athens will make the group stages.
AEK are a poor side, we should have beaten them handsomely even with a few injuries. You can blame the board quite a bit I agree but Rodgers needs to take the blame for that defence.
I hate to say it, but Hendry is not the class we need. Since his tackle on Miller, Jozo is about as physical as my old granny was and Lustig is finished especially as a full back.
I see little desire left in the team. Watch Gordon just before the second goal. Shaking his head as no one is listening to him, so he just gives up. They all need a serious boot in the balls as I recon Sudova will be just as good as AEK if not better.
That mob across the city know there’s not much to fear with us at the minute. We need to prove them wrong big time.

Time to accept our place in European football at the moment. We are Europa League level at best. That is not going to change under the current Board. They have a strategy/ model that is based on finding young talent and selling them to make cash. Celtic is being run as a business not a football club. Having cash in the bank is more important to them than ambition on the park. We may have won back to back trebles but we should be so far ahead of the rest that we are uncatchable, sadly that is not the case and i have taken the green tinted specs off to admit to that. BR has again spoke out about his frustrations at not spending prior to these qualifiers and quite rightly so he has been let down by a Board who do this every season gamble in the hope we make it. Well last night it has come back to bite them in the erse and it's going to cost us a fortune, all it will do is keep us at the same level as the rest rather than widening the gap. As Sutton said they were more interested in Disco lights for a competition they would even compete in. Is this strategy/ model going to take us forward? It won't at European level so let's end this big club talk. I have bit my tongue this last 2 years regarding the people running our club as BR was an appointment they got right, again sadly though they have let the man down. I for one would not care if PL and DD left. They would be replaced with ease, and by people who's ambitions were the same as the people who actually put cash into the Club not take from it. They have fooled us all into believing their "but look what happened to Rangers" talk. Yes look at them, spending more than us on no CL cash, no player sales cash, no kit cash. We spent cash to compete under O'Neill and we thrived! . I now hope that in my lifetime we have a Celtic run by different people, ambitious men who want Celtic back where they belong competing and holding their own at fortress Celtic Park in the CL. Nothing this lot do from now until the end of August will change anything the damage is done. One gamble too many by this lot. Players and Managers are sacked or sold for failure.

Big change in opinions now from a lot, domestic success isn’t exciting anymore as there are no challenges even with the state of this current defence we still clean up

European progress is where excitement comes from and we’ve blown it, Europa will be rubbish, lot of big clubs play weakened teams until the very late stages and for transfers now, any new signings if there is any will be projects or loans at best

Wouldn’t be surprised if BR left at end of the season and I don’t blame him.

When you are led by dithering rubbishebags our team reflects that. No one should have been surprised, apart from the happy clappers telling us it would be ok. We will get the players, trust Lawell to get the best deals.

How is that working out? It’s nit negative to point out a pathetic strategy of hope. A few hail mary’s Or saying keep the faith is bullrubbish. We are were we are because we have men devoid of ambition. That’s always been our problem and until these Sheep are driven out we will always be the same.

We aren’t even guaranteed to have players in for the EL playoff. How anybody can defend that board for that is beyond me. That’s taking forelock tugging to levels to new depths. It doesn’t make you a better fan because you see no wrong. The opposite is true.

The quality we need to compete at the top end of European football simply won't come to a one horse league unless we can offer Champions League football which we can't guarentee as we need to play 4 qualifiers! why is that so difficult to grasp? If you want to blame anyone blame BR for his awful record in the transfer market. It wasn't Lawell that wanted De Vries, Gamboa, Hendry, Ajer ( a mid to play at CB) , Hayes, Commper, Kouassi, Benyu etc Rodgers has had 5 windows to fix that defence but sells Sviatchenko as he favoured Boyata. Some are pointing the finger at the wrong person! I'm glad Peter Lawell is running the club and not most on here. Didn't BR have Odebayo on trial during pre season but decided against signing him? Remind me how Lustig got on last night? Blame lies squarely at the managers feet👍.

My posts have more point to them than most of the hystetical ramblings on here! The board have backed the manager to suggest otherwise when we smashed our transfer record on Edouard for £9m is nonsense especially when the board signed 3 defenders at BR's request - Gamboa, Hendry, Commper!

I've said before.
If a player of quality does not want to come then we have no control over that.
If the club was to announce all the failed attempts to sign players, we would look a right bunch of persons and be torn apart by media and sevco lot.
Hearts beat us so I guess they must have better players, let's go buy half their team. Now, we all know that was a stupid statement but you get my drift.

I want quality and not just a signing who I might be bitching about as a waste of money that could have been used on someone else.
I don't believe the Board are sitting on their cash pile refusing to spend it. (The more we spend on investment including players, the less we give the taxman)

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2018 07:56:48
In the cold light of day, over the two games we have no one to blame but ourselves. This was not a great or even strong team who bumped us, indeed over two legs we were the better side, but we sold the jerseys.

The lack of investment in BR and the team is disgraceful. If a manager of a club who has just won back to back trebles can't be backed then they need to explain why. If a player wants too much cash, or just does not want to play here fine, we are all big boys and can accept that. Negligence cannot ever be ignored., and that seems to be the problem.

The most annoying fact is we could have won that game last night. We switched off, twice, at the most vital time in a game. Now you cannot blame anyone but the players, lack of concentration is a personal issue. After the gifts, and this will sound crazy, we dominated both halves. But so many under performers also need looked at.

Lustig, after doing the same thing in the first leg, let's a cross come in. KT and CalMac both sleeping for the cut back sell ten yards to the attacking player. All three were disappointing for me. Jozo, if he could just stop playing stupid passes and concentrate, would do us fine as our combative CB with a more ball playing partner. Hendry, got to step up but he is not a kid, should be well settled instead of still looking a bit deer in headlights at times.

Eddy was a huge loss, massive as Moussa was not 100%. But we still has enough chances to win. And that's the galling aspect to all of this. But enough post mortem, we face a crucial period and need to be on it. One thing to remember is the garbage we will face from the media, so let's not get carried away believing them eh? Time to pull together.

One small upside, we might get a decent run in the EL. We are capable but just as capable of blowing the game to get there with this lack of defensive fortitude.

Last nights gone it's about how we now move forward as a team. We all know we are weak at RB and Centre Half we have also lost Armstrong who chipped in with a few goals so he needs replaced PR done nothing last season and I'm happy he won't be returning. Good luck to the bhoy. It's over to the board now do they trust BR with money or do they want to rest and hope we somehow win the league again in danger of the team stagnating.

I’ve not seen much garbage written on here. What I find strange is the reluctance of some people ( not all ) that don’t like critisism. That starting 11 last night had 9 players that all played under RD. That to me isn’t a team with rodgers stamp on it. Sure he’s came in, some players have stepped their game up but others haven’t. Everyone accepts this is the double treble winners, invincible etc, that will never be taken away from them but at a competitive European level they’re not good enough especially in defence. 3 goals over 2 legs AEK scored and everyone of them was handed on a plate. The defence is rotten it’s that simple. Gamboa, been here 2 years and can’t get in ahead of a poor lustig, jozo not good enough and clearly isn’t rated by rodgers when hendry and ajer both with limited European experience play ahead of him. The only quality defender we have is Tierney. Boyata is an out and our disgrace. What does Lee Congerton bring to the table? 2 years that clowns been here and for all we’ve brought in ntcham, Sinclair, dembele ( who I think was on RD’s radar anyway) and now Edouard. He’s also had a hand in bringing in de vries, hendry, gamboa, comper, not one decent defender amongst them. Never mind looking at more midfielders/ strikers 2 new Cb’s a RB are a necessity ASAP. and if this is me hitting the panic button etc then fine, Celtic fans don’t need the press to point out our failings, they’re glaring obvious for all to see.

Who’s to say Lee Congerton or BR have not identified targets and the board have not went after them? Celtic never strengthen when we are on top it’s as if we wait for teams to improve. Some of BR signings have been terrible but not every signing will be a success. RB CH And Attacking Mid for me, Rogic is not European level.

Campsie hoy your right, Celtic over the years are renowned for not building on success, but like you say and everyone knows, we’ve been screaming out for a solid if not 2 CB’s for long enough, we’ve been screaming out for a new RB, are we seriously expected to believe we can afford £9 million on an untried 20 year old striker but have no money to strengthen that defence? I’m sorry but the way Brendan goes on about boyata you’d think he was his love child, boyata is a bombscare of a defender and always has been from the day he arrived at the club, and if that’s the best that we can attract to Celtic then boy we really are in trouble.

As much as last nights defeat was a hard one to take, we could be reading the same comments for the last two or three years. How long have we needed new, better defenders? We continually shop around the “pound shop market “ for defenders hoping that we uncover the fated “rough diamond “. Like a few have said on the group if we would have qualified we would have taken some awful beatings in the group stages, however like most on here I can’t imagine us spending big now that we aren’t in it. Hopefully get as much for Boyata as we can, reinvest it and maybe give Brendan another 4/ 5 million to strengthen the back line. Going out now could also lead to us selling Ntcham or moose now as well . Nothing would surprise me with the board . Still can’t quite believe they get a high class manager in and then fail to back him, to see sevco outspend us after the last two seasons we have is unbelievable. If this feeling that’s seeping in isn’t stopped soon, we could be looking at a serious challenge from them for 8 in a row . Which again would be criminal from the position we were in .

He has had 5 tranafer windows to sort out the defence but sold Sviatchenko who was our best CB and also continues to play Lustig who gets ripped apart by anyone who has pace!
