See Ryan Christy scored for Aberdeen tonight, hope he does well this season.

Good to see him on the scoresheet but another shocking result in Europe from our second best team. They will go over there and that will be the end of their European run. All our countries teams out to opposition from Luxembourg, Bosnia, and Lithuania. Not even the Champions of those countries. "We're just a poor wee Country how can we compete" is no longer an excuse, there is a far bigger underlying problem to the pathetic displays in Europe by our teams.

13 Jul 2017 23:31:28
I must say that's a bit worrying. Scottish teams are out of Europe so regularly and quickly its hard to gauge the standard at all. Unless, well, its sh | te, and we are already outperforming reasonable expectations. Bo || ocks to that, right?

That's the thing Cavalcanti, I really don't think the league here is worse than that of the nations our teams get pumped off every year in the first rounds of qualifying. It's this attitude we have, that we're nothing and deserve to get pumped, that is dragging us down. The Lisbon Lions were called lions because of their attitude, the belief they could take anyone on. That's gone from Scotland now, replaced by this defeatist mentality that losing is just our lot and to be expected.

Agree2 Disagree2

14 Jul 2017 01:19:55
The problem lies partly with the SFA or SPFL they don't seem to want to help clubs in Europe. The ties start far too early before even pre season, Lincoln Red Imps is an example of rustiness so early on. If this was 3,4 or 5 games in I am sure teams would at least reach group stages of Europa. Are we really surprised that our first games are in Europe and our teams struggle? Its not going to improve until something changes on a larger scale.

Agree1 Disagree2

{Ed007's Note - The Bosnian league runs from July to May, has 12 teams and a winter break which nips the stupid summer football idea in the bud for a while hopefully. Apart from Celtic the rest of our league is probably comparable to the Bosnians although I did expect Aberdeen to win at home and draw away.}

14 Jul 2017 08:19:45
I don't think summer football is the answer but I'd shift the start of the season maybe a month earlier.
If our teams were up to speed then they'd have a better chance.

Attitude is part of what makes good players and teams though. The results speak volumes.

Exactly my thinking on it Jim, the negativity towards our game from press, tv and the EPL know it all nuggets has been going on for yrs, Then when a team does well the press fire in with the old ( how long can they keep him mince) , Small mentality from top to bottom and the powers that be are happy with that as they think they are doing a good job.

Collected my tickets today for the Sunderland game. The guy in the ticket office was saying we have sold over 5500 tickets.
If anyone is thinking of staying an over night you may have to stay a wee bit out the city centre. I just managed to book one in Washington. By the looks of things some of the Hotel chains are insisting on a min 2 night stay.
Any good bars for a wee drink before the game that I can get in with my teenage daughter?

Never been to Washington . but south shields is about 5 miles from Sunderland and is a good place for day out ( bevvy) stayed there a couple times while working down that way . probably about 6 or so miles from Washington bit round about I know but a decent place nonetheless . some good b&b places also if anybody else is looking for an overnighter.

The Roker hotel or the La Fontaine on the seafront but you'll need a taxi to the game or on Sunderland town centre THe life of Riley or Fitzgeralds or the Lambton worm near the travelodge (next to the university) . Most places ok for kids pre match mate.

ha ha well it was an omen a blooming BAD OMEN lol
well done Welshboy with your horse
But I am on safer ground with the football, the "tribute act's" conquerors are playing Limassol tonight, it will not be a huge price but the Cypriot team will win even though game is away from home, heat will not be a problem for them, I am so confident I would put my house on a Limassol win (but Mrs T has hidden the deeds lol)

Was just reading an article that said we have got rid of 19 players since the season ended, only 3 on loan, BR always said trimming was needed. Maybe freeing up a lot of dosh for the higher calibre needed?

From around 2006 squad numbers were huge we were buying players who weren't going straight into the starting 11 so we had the team and as many as 15-20 players fighting for a place on the bench and if truth be told not many of them you would start and its very difficult to shift guys on 3 or 4 year contracts. Saw it with Balde and Boerrigter. Think it was season 2007/ 2008 we had a squad of close to 40 players that's insane. BR has been pretty ruthless and that's what's needed, fortunately the guys who have left and will leave are a decent standard and there's sure to be plenty takers. going to be a good couple of weeks plenty ins and outs to come.

As you can see from my previous post I am concern about the lack of experience in the squad ( not the first eleven but the squad as a whole)
Now i have been looking to see if there are any hidden gems in the EPL for loan or cheap buys aka Scotty Sinclair
I have come up with these names i am sure you can more

Danny Ward GK
Phil Jagilka CD
James MaCarthy/ Mohamoud Besic CM
James Wilson CF

Honest and fair comments are welcome.

I really don't see us going for EPL players, the wages will dictate that jonace, yeah DRB they want 25 mill . wouldn't want him for half that quote tbh. mental market down there.

The English game is on another planet! And I don't just mean from us, it's from everyone! Excluding your barcas madrids and maybe Bayern, nobody else can get close to competing! Perfect example of it is the boy at swansea siggurdsson, who I like as a player btw.50 million pound they'r talking about,50 million! For a player who spent all season fighting relegation! Make me sick to my stomach honestly! I've said it before but to me football isn't football anymore, that mob down there have ruined it! I used to love watchn the games down there but I don't even bother now! 25 million for James McCarthy! Staggering!

I wouldn't worry about what league the player comes from . What I think is more important is the ability of the newcomer to play in the Celtic team and in Scotland. No point in having a really top youngster if he needs a warm sun on his back . I know almost every EPL player that is any good is priced through the roof but if we do come across one that is within our budget at least we have a fair idea if he settles in Scotland . Buying in players on a tight budget is probably the most difficult job in management.

I hope from the bottom of my heart that we make the group stages. HOWEVER, should we falter (NO reason why we should) a nice wee run in the EUR L wouldn't really hurt our profile. C'Mooooooonnn!

To be in europe after christmas regardless of which competition would be great, ideally in champs league, finishing 3rd and into europa would be great also.

13 Jul 2017 11:21:51
3rd in the CL groups and EL after Christmas would be fantastic IMO. CL is great to be part of but you want to go into ties with a good chance of winning. With a couple more key recruitments we could get to the latter stages.

Just want to put my tuppence worth in, as usual.

In my humble opinion the board deserve credit for backing the manager AGAIN with the signing of Ntcham. Then again they have to. But come on, credit where it's due.

The older generation of fans understand the job PL has done, and also realise that that's the way our market works, I do feel the youglings haven't the patience for it imo, they want signings yesterday. Outwith the ronnie gamble ( still think he done ok) , I think he's done a great job. A excellently run club who are financially in a great position.

It makes no difference if you are old or young. I personally would prefer that we got signings in and bedded in ASAP so they can help us qualify for the champions league rather than our previous "wait until we get there and spend a bit of money, oh no we're out" attitude.

What BR said makes a lot of sense about the Premier League clubs deciding their squad later in the window and if we want a Patrick Roberts type we have to wait and see what happens to him. He is the type worth waiting for but we all remember waiting and getting Pukki and Scepovic. 😥.

Bhoywonder. Congratulations on a very fine post . Too many of our fans were getting their knickers in a twist re our signings before we got Ntcham signed and sealed and now we are relaxing, such a small line between recruiting successfully and panic stations .
The club is been run exceptionally well and we remember the abuse the board got when Murray was spending everyone's money and Celtic were trying to complete and not cheat or break the law .

To me there is a difference Naill bud, the younger fans have been brought up watching the team succeed, The older generation ( pre fergus) remember the low points all too well, My point being that when you have the success its not enough in some fans eyes, as they have never been put through the ringer like the pre fergus days. They want more and more, to spend more etc, Not realising that we are where we are now because of spending within our means, I still wake up every day and thank the lord for fergus mccann.

I am somewhere in the middle. Just about to turn 36 and my earliest Celtic memory is the 1989 cup final.

Saw Rangers cheat there way to 9 in a row and remember hating Fergus like 99% of Celtic fans even when we stopped 10.

I agree the club has succeeded off the back of being prudent and spending within their means but Ed will back me in this that PL has been in the press on numerous occasions bumping his gums about our ability to afford 6 million pound signings. He is part of building fans expectations up and then disappointing them.

I am fairly happy to wait to see what happens but if we end up with another Johnny Hayes or Barrie MacKay (squad player) then what was the point in waiting?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Lawwell has said that on a few different occasions over the years.}

14 Jul 2017 15:49:01
Cant disagree with the Lawell statements Niall and Ed, i remember him bumping his gums a few times on the matter, we've just shelled out about 6 mill on ntchem (including fees wages etc) and prob get a few more in on decent fees and wages, But to some its not enough in my view, The past few weeks we were linked with established EPL players and people were saying not good enough past it etc, players that wouldve cost more than the 6 mill pedro went on about, and wouldve enhanced the squad no end. that's the point im trying to make, PPl are so used to the memories that they want more, want us to compete with the big money clubs in champs league when we both know that's not possible bud. I guarentee that if we don't win the treble undefeated next yr some sections of our support will see it as a failure. Can you imagine the older fans reacting like that?
