Guys
The Patrick Roberts saga: if we can sign him it would be fantastic, if we can't then we can move on. He is not the be all and end all for us. Yes, he made a fantastic contribution last season and the relationship he struck up with KT was a joy to see but we are Celtic FC, we can and should move on with or without Roberts. If we can get him back it would be fantastic but if we fail to sign him it's not the end of the world. HH.

It would seem we were hoping for another loan deal and bought Hayes as insurance against this failing.
Unfortunately Hayes is struggling to step up a level (or two) and the striker and centre back injury crisis has raised more serious issues - even wee paddy couldn't solve.
The team at present is unbalanced and a bit below par.
However, against Thistle we still had plenty possession and attacks, with numerous crosses from KT, Lustig - and even Hayes but lacked a target or presence in the box.
As the game dragged on at 1-0 we ended up having to risk LG to try and secure the win and aggravated his injury.
I agree wee paddy would have been a bonus, but we are really struggling in other key positions which take priority.

Agree0 Disagree5

13 Aug 2017 01:54:52
Let's forget about paddy, if it's not going to happen, don't worry about it, he is a talented young guy, but he is nothing that special, at the moment, maybe he will develop into a superstar, maybe not, I think the young supporters of today are so starved of any kind of talented players, they go absolutely doolally if anyone manages to dribble the ball.

If he signed good if he doesn't it won't end us . we shouldn't be hanging on till a minute from end of deadline of the window . give him and city the final offer tomorrow if no joy then end the saga . there are as good and better players out there.

13 Aug 2017 11:39:12
The advantage of signing Roberts is that we know exactly what we are getting, once you have to start looking elsewhere for players, you may end up with a player who although talented, may not settle in as well, and also someone who doesn't have the same liking for the club that Paddy seems to.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2017 12:40:58
We are struggling a bit due to injuries. We have loads of midfield players who can fill the space as required. Its centre back and striker that we are missing. Would prefer Ajar at centre back. Why is he not playing instead of Bitton? So if we play Ajar and have Bitton as cover we are just about ok. The new CB we are looking at is 20 yrs old. Will he be any better than Ajar? What message are we sending to him? He is a super CB and should be getting game time.

Striker required but we can't sign one before Tuesday and play him Wednesday in such a big game. We should have bought a striker as soon as Dembele pulled the hamstring again instead BR stated that he could not accommodate 3 strikers? Who knows if Dembele problem is going to keep happening just like it did to Michael Owen? We need to cover that possibility and buy a quality striker.

We will have European football, 38 games in the league, and 2 cup competitions. That could be over 60 games if we get a run in europe. 2 strikers will struggle to remain injury free. can't understand why the board can't see it?

Hi all new gear. I had a horrible feeling this would come back to bite us. I feel Rodgers arrogance has made him look silly as he now admits he needs a striker. Maybe the invincible has went to there heads. One are the board backing him or does he think he has enough not to strengthen. How can we not criticise him, he should have signed a cb well before now, and a striker. It was obvious a blind man could see. If this was delia we would be going crazy. Where's all this money.

With the possible news that we may now be in for a forward, what are people's ideas on it? Do u think we will go for someone on loan like Ings or Austin, an unheard off forward or god forbid someone like moult as moussa or griff are going to be the main options?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

12 Aug 2017 15:54:57
I think it has to be a 3rd choice striker as back up, so wouldn't expect a big signing so to speak. The market should be quite big id imagine in that area. I couldny even guess who to be honest.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 Aug 2017 15:55:06
It's more concerning for me that we are so far into the season - without addressing such a huge problem, especially with such an important qualifier on the horizon.
The warning signs were there last season when both MD and Griff were missing but because we were in full throttle - and other players were red hot, we got away with it.
Obviously we could not have predicted the various injury problems so early in the season, but the shuffling and shifting is clearly affecting the team and the makeshift striker and centre half situation is to much of a gamble against any half decent organised side.
Add to this an unsettled Armstrong and an out of his depth Hayes and we really need our class players to hit real form and deliver as any late addition (apart from PR) will find it hard to have an immediate impact?

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Aug 2017 10:22:34
Just going through some of the posts and looking at social media regarding Astana game, it seems strange to me that Astana have suddenly morphed into Real Madrid. I know it will be a tough game, but they're not better than they were last year, and I think we are much improved since we played them. I feel Beer Sheva would have been a far tougher tie. If we're close to our best, I feel we'll go through with a goal or two to spare. Also interesting that a Herald Journalist has stated that Celtic will announce the signing of Roberts today. here's hoping!

Believable3 Unbelievable2

12 Aug 2017 12:24:27
We were so much better. But with the changes to the team and a lack of a striker and paddy, has seen us not as good as we were last year.

We aren't firing at all yet and the lack of adequate cover has made this tie harder than it should have been.

Same old same old CL preparation. Can you imagine the abuse RD would be getting if he had been at the helm and hadn't sorted out the cover? Playing Bitton in cd? Possibly having no striker for the final qualifying round?

Sutton et al would have slaughtered him. And rightly so. It's been a balls up. Surely if we make it next year they will get their feckin figure out quicker.

I won't hold my breath.

Agree6 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - We hear the same story every year from our managers, they all talk about getting players in early so that they are ready for the CL qualifiers and yet in the last match against Rosenborg the only new signing playing was Hayes and he was only playing because Forrest was playing as striker.
Not to mention Lawwell's seemingly annual announcement that we could spend Β£6 million + on a player.}

12 Aug 2017 12:53:31
As a unit, we are in far better shape then we were against Astana last year. Injuries happen. Can't sign quality on the likelihood that we would lose two CBs to injury? That's just bad luck, as is the situation with Griff and Dembele. We had O'Connell playing at CB v Astana last year! ☺.

Agree1 Disagree1

12 Aug 2017 12:56:16
Ed

You forgot the usual "we signed him in January so that is like a new signing for the champions league qualifiers". I will attribute that one to Kennedy as an excuse for us not signing anyone the Summer after we signed Armstrong and GMS.

We all know that to improve we have to be signing better than what we currently have an although I do think Ntcham is going to be a good signing I don't think he is any better than what we already had and Hayes certainly isn't.

Agree0 Disagree1

12 Aug 2017 13:04:56
My expectations due to Rogers were raised as I thought he was serious about getting the players in that would take us to the next level. That hasn't happened. Armstrong us more effective imo than Natcham has shown. Hayes in for paddy is farcical. No CB cover. It's just not on.

I will keep the Valium prescription on repeat for now.

O'Neil knew his era of success was over . Just as he did everywhere else .
You are a first Jamesbhoy to raise the issue of Brendan's massive wage . I don't any other proper Celtic fan begrudges B R wages . No manager, with EPL experience would join Celtic if money was their goal.
I think Brendan is right to restrict his purchases to buying the right player for the right position.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Aug 2017 23:42:11
wheres all these players of quality he said he was going to buy then? nowhere because lawwell has told him even though there is a fortune in the bank he won't spend it.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2017 23:07:41
Qjamesbhoy, how do you eavesdrop on Mr Lawwell's and Mr Rodgers conversations .
How do u know that Brendan is not relatively happy with the players in so far this year . I remind u he has bought in two outstanding youngsters for mid field, the best front line player iSPL outside of Celtic and an outstanding prospect .
If u understand anything about our financial restraints you would appreciate that Celtic cannot afford to buy a replacement for a player who is likely to be out injured for less than 12 wks of season .
We are also blessed with numerous top home bred or brought in youngsters, far better for club to use them if necessary.

I would imagine we are flying out on Monday at the latest so not leaving ourselves much time to finalise a deal for a striker.

Why do we constantly do this? Why not buy from a position of strength rather than flapping at the last minute.

It's not like Griff and MD played every single game last season. Both missed lots of games (some at the same time) so was Brendan expecting the miracle that they would both stay fit all season?

My bad, maybe just hoping we were away first!

Wildcard rules are we can sign someone up to 24 hours before the game so still tight to get someone signed up and registered by Tuesday night.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Aug 2017 12:49:36
Is Griff definitely struggling for Astana Mally? That is a worry. I don't think any of us are convinced with Forrest up front.

I am less convinced with Bitton at central defence. I always thought he was rash in the tackle (before Jamesbhoy jumps in, I know you can get ointment for that sort of thing! ) . He hasa tendency to give away a lot of frees and pick up silly bookings for lunging in. Not a good habit to have, especially if he is the last man. Didn't see the game last night because of work but I heard Packie Bonner saying he may have been lucky not to have given away a penalty?

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Aug 2017 13:49:48

It was brendan that said griff was feeling his calf tight abhfjb and has now conceded a third striker might be a good idea as the forrest rogic experiment hasn't worked . Still think big clubs should have 3 quality strikers and its up to them to keep the jersey ir your left with the predicament we're in now.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 Aug 2017 14:29:24
Am never confident when Nir takes that extra touch because when the opposing striker gets alongside he is not strong enough to hold him off and that was a classical example of that last night

If he is going to play there he is going to need to build upper strength or get rid of the ball quicker IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Aug 2017 21:51:10
I am sure if you. Can see that flaw in Nir's game, Brendan is likely to see it too and will do something to correct it . We are quite lucky that, that is Nir's big fault as most players we have, have many faults.
