Heard Collins talking about who he'd like us to get in the last 32 and he went on to say he would like an English club to test ourselves against top players! How sad how far our club has fallen over the last 4 or 5 years. From 2001 - 2009 only Barcelona and Ajax ( who we had beaten 3-1 away and won the tie)managed to beat us at Celtic park in that time Juventus, Milan(twice), Man U(twice) Liverpool, Barcelona, Valencia, Celta Vigo, Villareal, Bayern, Stuttgart, Porto, Benfica(twice), Lyon (twice) Shakter Donesk and Anderlecht all came and failed, how sad we're now talking about testing ourselves against 2nd rate English sides.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Stevie, I would think Scottish people and Scottish teams would always welcome an opportunity to test themselves and to beat English sides no matter who they are .

stevie, your story is a bit the same as norwegian side Rosenborg in the 90's. They won the league and qualified for CL ten years in a row. The beat AC Milan to qualify for the last 32, they beat Real Madrid in Madrid, Benfica, Atletico etc etc all was beaten and the confidence was very high. Nowm they all are talking about the good old days, and they have been doing so for the last 10 years or so.

Its not wrong to think about what once was, but you could get very disapointed if the team dosnt win against the big teams anymore. You are what you are. Not what you where. i'm just saying cause if you are a norwegian football fan, you can't get disapointed, even when you struck out against a midtable irlandside. Norway was in 94' ranked as number four in the world, beat Brazil to get to the quarterfinale in the worldcup 98', now we are number 70.

So nothing personal JimTim (hope you don't get me wrong), but just an experience in the same kind of what CFC is at the moment. :-)

Just seen a list of the 15 teams we could draw in the last 32, I'd like to see a repeat of the 1970 European final or a revenge match against Legia only other easier draw would be Club Brugge. Who would everyone like to face?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

12 Dec 2014 05:35:27
Prefer 2 avoid legia tbh would just be chaos between the fans

Scepovic was good movement for 1st goal was fab

Kind of resigned myself to Commons leaving which is sad as slow as he is capable of top quality/piece of magic!

Mathews had a game to forget

Fear if we get a " top heavy / big scorers" could get a doing :-(

What really annoyed me tonight, and not for the first time over the past month or two, is Chris Sutton. For whatever reason he just can't stop having a pop at Celtic, has someone at cp upset him.Maybe it's just me, has anyone else picked up on it.killy.

Agree0 Disagree1

Said the same myself Jamie, we are one decent centre forward away from a right going over. I cannot get confident about our defence at all and if we get 10m for VVD, then gimme it.

We cannot raise our game past the average SPL teams - teams that are nowhere near good enough to as much as qualify for the Europa League.

Yet again in Europe, our best player is the goalkeeper. Not unusual I know against teams like Barca but Astra and Zagreb, c'mon.

I'm also not interested in the 'we've already qualified' carry-on, the defence and midfield were a shambles and its very obvious why Lennon shipped McGregor out and didn't play him.

In saying all this, we're in 4 competitions after Christmas and I'll take that all day long.

Agree0 Disagree0

We can't do the simple things simply!
This isn't just tonight but like you say, numerous times!
I agree with sutton.
He maybe is being harsh considering the team he played in, but still true!

I've not posted for a long time.
We beat Dundee utd 6-1, everybody thought it was great. The score was, the game was. If you break it down we could and should have been 2 down before we scored then another before we scored again, it didn't pan out that way so 6-1 it was.
Most games we've played it's not been great, Motherwell was the best we've played and only won 1-0?

Every team we play creates chances and picks big holes in our play, for the life of me I can't pick out why because it's too simple!
And I mean every team, the mince we play against every week never mind Europe, can pick holes and it's shockingly bad.
My under 13s can shut down balls quicker!
I agree with sutton, why pretend otherwise? because it's negative?

How's things Ed? Not posted for a bit, different reasons. Hope alls good?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I'm good thanks, BBJ, and nice to see you posting. I hope you get any problems sorted out, take care mate.}

Totally agree Mrs E! And yet CG again top night they first two goals we shipped tonight a though a was watching STRICTLY! they waltz right through us! and it is not the first time when a heard the commentator say CG has made his "UMPTEENTH" save of the EL campaign a had a wry smile and a sense of frustration!

IMO a think we are crying out for a couple of 27 yr old / 28 yr olds who have a bit of pedigree, we are sensible we know we are not going to get a couple of £4-5 mill types! but a hope this window we don't get the usual and trying to "unearth an unpolished diamond"

It's about time we got something back as a said at the start of the campaign they cannot leave that No7 shirt empty for much longer and yet a feel in this window we have other priorities! starting with a Centre Half! VVD is at most got this next window with us (that is if he is not away in this one) atvb jb7

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - We shipped 4 goals and you're sitting with a wry smile on your face? Cue the excuses why none of the FOUR goals we conceded were CG's fault, and before you all start hammering your keyboard, a GK's job is to keep the ball out the net, our GK failed FOUR times to do that.
If any other team let in FOUR goals their GK and defence would be getting slaughtered, and rightly so, a GK has to take his share of the responsibility for failure if he wants plaudits for keeping clean sheets.
The goal difference column doesn't go into details like 'we've conceded 11 goals in 6 games but have you seen some of the saves the GK made?'
I've never had a smile, wry or otherwise, watching CFC losing a match never mind shipping four goals, and it was hardly Barca we were playing, we scored 3 goals!}

Very much a curate's egg tonight, pretty good going forward, very poor defending . I have always thought that Matthews would come good again once he got a run in the team, but tonight he was very poor even poorer than in his previous games . Many of our players had bad games tonight, but most had some redeeming features like for example Izzy still getting to the goal line in the 81st minute and creating the third goal. McGregor started the season scoring in nearly every game, but he really isn't doing anything positive of late . Scepovic was very good tonight, I think many of us had written him off, but we probably have a good striker in him . We just cannot play without Brown, our defence got no cover tonight .

Agree0 Disagree0

We do need a big forward ask yourself how many crosses have we put in at open play and scored a header all season at a guess 100 crosses how many headers open play have we scored

Agree0 Disagree0

Why the pop Ed? as a said "a wry smile AND a sense of frustration" and before you batter the keyboard ( in the nicest sense as it is what you do) and say it his job to keep the ball out the net then how many would it have been without his "UMPTEENTH" save as a also said they were waltzing towards him & that is not his fault

I had the smile because as a said recently previously on here that nothing splits the views more than CG! and was thinking of here, if they had rested him tonight the knives would have been out to say was he rested / was he injured / was he fit / can he play two games in a week etc.

For the purposes of doubt mate defensively we are rotten, missing Lustig badly IMO, but CG report card as I constantly say reads "so far so good " and barring injury it is all it is ever going to say certainly over the period of his current deal

ATVB JB7

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I said 'before you all start hammering', I wasn't meaning you in paricular. Any time he CG gets mentioned it usually attracts people's wrath. I never seen umpteen saves, for every save he made tonight we probably conceded a goal to cancel it out. And it would have been five goals, Dinamo's disallowed goal in the first half was onside.}

Got to say I've no idea where the venom directed at Gordon is coming from either but appreciate fans have their own opinion. It's just some seen a bit 'out there' are really hope it isn't down to him being an ex-Hearts player that trained with Rangers last season.

We all know he's injury prone but we have 3 goalkeepers at the Club, Gordon, Zaluska and Fasan - at this moment in time, Gordon is the best we have.

It's not the goalkeeper who allows the opposition shots at goal. If we are playing a high pressing, possession game with success then why is this happening?

Our defence is a shambles and has been for a while.

Come on bhoys, this defending is atrocious, that's 18 conceded in Europe, unbelievable

Believable1 Unbelievable1

No drive from the bhoys which I expected as the game was a dead rubber. Matthews though for me was again shocking, can't wait for Lustig to return

Agree1 Disagree1

11 Dec 2014 19:57:20
I don't know what it is when they play In Europe but they seem to panic. I'm thinking that it's lacking experienced players that might be the issue. It shouldn't be a complete culture shock to play a Croatian team but it's looking like it is. I think they are an average team and they had celtic on the rack for long spells. Quite worrying but hopefully they can get a proven CB in to show the rest the ropes in Europe.

Agree0 Disagree0

Brown is such a miss in midfield it's getting silly how often I say that. Commons again totally ineffective in Europe. Experience needed at the back. Scepovic looked decent however, Commons and Wakaso did him no favours whatsoever. Just read the team sheet again and apparently Mcgregor was playing too.

Agree0 Disagree0

Its sad how champions from other smaller nations still look decent compared to us. I'd love us to have a team like Salzburg. A lot of decent players from our group i'd be happy to have at Celtic. These teams have managed to find quality players for reasonably cheap whereas the ones we get don't seem to be European standard

Agree2 Disagree1

It's pretty simple how many clubs in central and Eastern Europe can get quality players at reasonable prices . They don't have the TV sponsored Epl down the road from them . Players will move around neighbouring countries in their areas at reasonable transfer fees, once Celtic become involved British agents show an interest, and fees go through the roof .

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Dec 2014 18:57:11
The guy on the TV described Celtic being 80/1 to win the EL as "accurate". I wanted to be annoyed at him but tbh I'd say it's quite flattering considering some of our defending tonight. I'm hoping for a quick return for Denayer and a couple of solid buys in January. Flashes of quality at timesas well though to give credit where it's due.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm still scratching my head at how we've even qualified to be honest. But credit where it's due, we have done. A bit investment is needed yes indeed. Few important faces back in the side should benefit us too and hey, anything can happen.

Agree0 Disagree1

I was very annoyed with him; but more annoyed at the Celtic Board for getting us into this state in such a very short space of time.
Our European reputation has evaporated in two short years and we are a joke to every no-name pundit on every channel.
Never mind the 'meaningless tie' tag, as the thousands who travelled and those who suffer at home deserve better from our beloved champions.

It makes no odds that we have a long illustrious history in Europe as today - we have too many players (including VVD) that are way out of their depth on the European stage.
Breaks my heart and bursts ma archie

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - (clap)

It's true jungle. Sad, but true.

Agree1 Disagree0

Jungle I think there were 1, 500 Celtic fans at the match . I don't know if they all travelled from these islands, or if some live or work nearer to Croatia .

The board decided some five years ago to adopt a buy young and hopefully improve the players and sell some of them at a good profit . That policy took us to the last 16 of the Champions league two years ago. Probably more players than the Board or Management would have liked demanded moves and were sold at a decent profit . In the meantime Celtic bought in probably better players, than the original young players who moved on at big profits . These players haven't progressed as much as before . At the same time Matthews didn't push for a move and we now have a poor R B on our hands, instead of £5m . That he was probably worth a few years ago. I don't know how the board could afford to buy and pay a £5/8m player year after year to build a better team by buying it .

Agree0 Disagree1

Chris; I have read this three times and don't get your point.
Who cares were the supporters live? There was a sizeable travelling support expecting a better performance.
The money from Ki, Wanyama, Hooper and Forster was certainly not re-invested in similar quality although I would say Johansen for Ledley was a good piece of business.
Mathews like Kayal, Forrest, Lustig and Boerighter are injury prone and will never be anywhere near there best and continue to pick up wages season after season for very little.
The current squad are ill equiped for European football as has been proven and the players at the club now are well below the levels I and many other Celtic supporters expect.
Even domestically we are not as dominant as we should be given the current set-up and cash advantage.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jungle Jim if you hadn't exaggerated in your posts the number of Celtic fans having travelled to the game, I wouldn't have posted in the first place .
I think most people realize that it is by selling the players who demand to leave, Celtic are able to perform at the standard they continue to perform at .
Remember the players you mentioned all came to the club as young players whom the clubs had high hopes for .
They were replaced by players at the same stage of development as the players you listed . Unfortunately many of these haven't come through as well.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Dec 2014 18:54:01
We really cannot defend against even the most average European teams and this must be a worry for the next stage of the tournament.
Thankfully their defence looks just as bad so maybe we will sneak it 8-7?!

How bad is Matthew s tonight?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Worst of a bad bunch. Needs the game time though.

{Ed007's Note - Lars Christopher Vilsvik?}

Aint seen him Ed. Is that a suggestion, recommendation or hint?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Yes (wasntme)

11 Dec 2014 20:30:32
Vilsvik would be a good signing. He has a german mom and has gone thrue youth training in german football before he came to Strømsgodset. He can also play both lb and rb. Quick, good with ball, good attacking and of course he knows Deilas football.

Agree0 Disagree1

Interesting mate. You're cryptic at best. Would you hint/suggest that Matthews or Lustig are for the off? Over the past year Lustig has been the better right back but I really rate Matthews, or used to. His injuries really are becoming a hinderance.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It was a name mentioned when RD first came in but with Lustig and Matthews here I couldn't see it happening. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lusitig and especially Matthews leave over the next two windows.}

Hi Norwegianred can I ask you it is a CB we are needing now that RD has said he wants to buy Nordic!

It is a Centre Half we are crying out for IMO there was talk of a Rosenberg player by a regular poster here HamiltonBhoy ( a think)? who knows his stuff about untapped players

IMO we are crying out for a bit of experience someone ages of Broonie who has experienced a bit is a must for me

11 Dec 2014 23:24:31
Ah, I think he's refering to stefan Strandberg? He would be a great adition to tour squad, but I would go for vegard forren from molde. I think he's abilities would fit as a partner for de vrij (sorry for bad spelling), likes to carry the ball in to the midfield, are good on the ball, a regular in the nationalteam and does scores some eeal screamers.

So does big Virgil getting the captaincy show where Deila sees Commons in the squad. No big deal but a bit of an odd decision from the manager.

11 Dec 2014 19:02:37
Not really. VvD is first name on the team sheet so deserves to be captain. Commons has hardly played a game for us this season. Would have been a strange decision to make him captain imo

So Craig Gordon starts! Seems to be fit enough, all the doubters should lay off his back and let him do what he does best! Fully fit GORDON is 1 of the best keepers in Britain

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Nobody's ever disputed that but it's just a pity he hasn't been fully fit since 2009!}

Afternoon Ed, A see wee Nakamaura is back in town for tomorrow's game and am sure that will bring some good memories back from all of us!

Man if there was ever an award for a player stayed OUT OF the limelight surely it would go to him?

A remember my big pal was the Community Safety Inspector @ London Road PO at the time when he signed the Celtic website CRASHED as it was taking something like 400,000 hits a MINUTE ffs! My big pal was them summoned to the Japanese Consulate in London as they were taking (wait for it!) THIRTY thousand requests a WEEK! to come and see him play and they did not know how to handle it! Shame you were not around those days Ed with your "health & safety skills" you could have retired on the back of that lol!

My mate had to do a full risk assessment so the Japenese could get in n out the East End without getting turned over / directions / translator etc took him fargin ages and became a job in itself! atvb jb7

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't mind admitting how much I loved wee Naka, one of the best players we've seen at Paradise in recent years. I sometimes feel wee Lubo gets more credit from us fans than Naka does, to me they're both equally brilliant.

AH have you been drinking all day. Naka could not lace Lubos boots.

TRAVEL ADVISORY : Scottish League Cup semi-final
Stenaline has allocated the Belfast boat to Celtic fans for the semi final only. P&O, who are accommodating Rangers fans, are more
expensive than Stenaline, and the Zombies are not happy.

For every £10 they spend we'll spend a £5.
