Does anyone really believe we could win the champions league? I'm not saying with this team but say for instance Rogers stays and wins five in a row and we have been qualifying for the champions league each season we could spend 15/ 20 million a season on quality players. I think if you bought wisely with the players we have at the moment tierney dembele etc we could have a potential world class team capable of challenging anyone on there day. Would love to know everyone's thoughts?

In the grand scheme of things we have a decent team with one or two potentially top class players. There is scope for us to improve further but never to a level where we can win the Champions League I'm afraid, nowhere near it as long as we play in the Scottish Premiership.

There's not a chance we'll win the champions league mate! And that's not me being negative because I like your thinking and positivity! But 15 to 20 million for the next 5 seasons is still small change in champions league terms! We mite be lucky with the draw a couple of times and reach last 16 but that's it bud! Look at the last 8 of the champions league the last 5 seasons.

I don't know the exact amount but I'm guessing there won't be a massive amount of teams out with the big 5 leagues. its frustrating to think there's only so far we can go but I'm afraid that's the reality in today's football world! And it will only get worse by the way. the money going about now is obscene and we'll fall further and further behind.

Unless england germany spain italy and france suffer a catastrophic financial collapse, it will never happen again im afraid. Rangers fans are allowed to dream of winning our league, so why can't we dream of winning the big one, again. Like the Rangers fans dreams though, its all pie in the sky.

{Ed007's Note - What about a #GoingFor2 campaign during the CL next year? ;-) It's about as believable as the going for 55 garbage.}

Leicester City ring any bells?
Team struggling then wins EPL now back in reality and might survive relegation this season.
It happens, but it would be that million to one opportunity with all the stars aligning with the cusp of Sagittarius and the moon turning blue. not realistically going to happen but not out of the realms of possibility.
Seriously, the CL is weighted against teams like ours. YES in 1967 we blew all predictions but today is a different world (we can dream and who knows? )

I've always said with our home crowd if we get a good side ie stronggg in all positions then we could go far

Ha ha brilliant idea Ed. Joking aside i reckon we have more chance of winning a 2nd big cup than they have of winning their 1st league title

Our progress this last 6 months has been pretty remarkable. We are a different beast and that's mainly because Rodgers has been allowed to take control of the footballing side. For the first time in a few seasons we are acting like we want to be a dominant Celtic again, We look in fine shape on and off the park. I will be happy with getting through the qualifiers and giving a good account of ourselves in the Champions League group stages over this next 2 to 3 years. At home we have the Manager and players to win back to back trebles, Not saying it will be easy but that should be our target. If you look at the players who are on our bench at the moment they would all walk into the Sevco, Aberdeen and Hearts teams with ease. That shows how strong we are compared to the rest at the moment

Rodgers did say he would have us as a last 16 team in three years so who knows but if we could consistently get to the last 16 then anything is possible

Since uefa doctored and pockled the tournament to suit television and ensure the rich get richer, the integrity and fairness has been lost to greed and elitism.
Thankfully we already have that gold star on the jersey to remind us of a time when skill, flair and guts was enough.

Nothing wrong in thinking last 16 or 8 along the lines of teams like benfica and Porto or ajax

fk me

we go from non qualification 2 years in a row, including bottom of our eu league group to winning the CL.

what was the costs of not even the bench - but the players who didn't make he SQUAD of the CL winning teams over the last ten years - probably more than at least double our entire teams worth.

We would need 6 top players at least, all injury free, tactics 100% spot on, and a colossal amount of luck in the draws and in the games.

I know we can be deluded. let's first get to a place/ squad where we can qualify every year, then a squad where we can make the next round every year, then and only then with some luck could we even ever contemplate making a final.

och we've already won the european cup let's go for something more prestigious we haven't won like the petrol station cup, what do you mean they retired it after sevco won it and changed its format? it was so difficult to win by the way it took sevco four years to win it, seemingly all the joiners and 'brickies' they played against built walls to stop them scoring lol.

No we can't not chance, it's a shite tournament that the big countries have got together and made it practically impossible for a club like ours to win and every year they dream up new qualifiers and fair play rules to make it even more impossible, you mention Leicester but the dreadfully overrated epl is taking steps and having meetings to make sure that anomaly doesn't happen again.

The good thing for me about that post, is that it shows how far we've come in a short time.
Imagine that being posted last year?

Let's enjoy the ride we're on. One game at a time and all that.

Brown was immense last night, I was desperate to see him score.

Martin O'Neill spent millions of pounds on proven English Premiership players like Sutton, Hartson, Lennon and Thompson and they struggled to get us out of the group stages.

We are not shopping anywhere near that calibre of player now and never will again so no danger of getting anywhere near winning the CL.

Priority has to be improving the squad year on year and when it does come to losing a Dembele or a Tierney that the manager is allowed to soften the blow with a decent replacement. Too many times in the past we have taken the cheap option (Ambrose over Ciani or Pukki or Finbogsson) and it has ending up costing us more in either mistakes on the park or paying someone off.

@dundeebhoy - from finishing bottom of this seasons CL group, coupled with embarrassing results ( the Imps ) to played off the park in the 2nd leg by a ' brilliant ' Israeli side to winning the CL within 5 seasons! I'll have a couple of pints of whatever you're on! #Going for 2!
