Good day all. So mensay has said tha we are a viable option for him as we have a great history and 'the best fans in the world' direct quote! I don't know if he's too injury plagued or Peaked to early but if fit and wages are affordable he should be a serious target! I would hope if he is still a good player we would be doing everything to acquire him

According to Skysports transfers, John Mensah will sign for Glasgow Celtic shortly, his agent has told this to his local paper in Ghana

Agree0 Disagree1

Well if the Ghanian said it then IT MUST BE TRUE!!!!!!!!!!

Agree0 Disagree0

If we can keep this guy fit he could be a top top signing!

Was impressed any time I saw him play for Sunderland, and with no transfer fee he is well worth a shot!

NO NO NO TO MUCH WAGES TO INJURY PRONE..............jimthetim..

According to slyspurts celtic are favourites to sign john mensah and simon cox.A very good striker and centre back and then all we need is a creative midfielder.
Barry1888

Believable4 Unbelievable7

Almost a guarantee neither will happen then........

Jamie Mac

Agree1 Disagree1

Not convinced by cox considering he barely got a game for west brom but mensah looks like an ideal signing.

Agree1 Disagree1

Didnt the club state signings would be dependant on champions league qualification.......so links with anyone until next week are defo a bit of a stretch.

Agree0 Disagree0

Wouldnt mind john mensah, would never sign simon cox, tony stokes is better then him IMO. We want a decent target man. Anyway IMO i think we will get to CL group stages without bringing in anyone.

CelticDubGary

Agree0 Disagree0

Cox cant get a game so how is he going to be any better than what we have?

C'mon Celtic get the finger out!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Cox is no better than what we already have, we need quality not quantity

Agree0 Disagree0

Chris Sutton wasn't getting a game before he came to Celtic, and I'm pretty sure there are others who have came to the club who weren't first choice at there previous clubs. So I wouldn't hold that against him, don't know that much about him to be honest.

JD

Agree0 Disagree0

But if he's on the fringes of the West Brom team he should be almost as good as MA Fortune! I think our scouting network is better than that to be honest and we'll sign players we are maybe less familiar with. The over priced, second rate English flop route has not served us well in the past, see Daryl Murphy.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cox will make no improvement to starting line up so no thanks, we have plenty of average fringe players, no need for any more.

For those guys happy we are not spending, consider this.

We now have ONLY EUROPEAN football as our selling point to targets. we need to reinforce to get there, if we don't we won't its simple.

However, it must come into consideration the effect of not being competitive in Europe to our squad. Do you really believe for one second that kayal, ledley, vic et Al would be happy to stay in a league which is monotonous to say the least? Course not especially when any of them could jump ship to the monotonous part of epl bundesliga etc and double, potentially treble their take home?

Do not get me wrong I know or would hope that all our players would aspire to.play at a higher level week in week out, so they will be leaving at some point whatever we do! But here's the thing- if we already know that they will leave why can't we tip this in our favour?

Spend the money strengthening just now if it doesn't work we sell someone to make money back, then due to state of spl, we try again next summer, and so on. If it takes one of our best to go to give us the best chance to improve then so be it, it cannot be questioned.

On the other hand it may work first time, exposing the players to much needed and valued match experience which will make them better of course, the better they are the more they go for.

Is anyone actually.under the impression a speculative 4-5m total for two or three players would devastate the long term future of the club financially were this outlay to go belly up?

Jamie Mac(said this for a year)

Believable6 Unbelievable6

I agree fully with you mate! I'm not looking for any marquee signings just a bit more quality added and if it doesn't work out sell one of our talented young squad!half our fans are so ignorant they can't read between the lines and see these options we have!

Brian

Agree1 Disagree0

Whit jist kept repeetin the same thing?

Agree0 Disagree0

Here here...players are needed and wether people like it or not money needs to be spent...we've cleared out alot of deadwood so no excuses

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree, we need european football not only to entice players here, but also to keep the guys we do get.

the club, and fans, have to remember that, although it's great we're picking up guys like kayal, wanyama, ki, hooper, matthews, izzy etc for peanuts, their sell on value is only representative of the experience and opposition they play. so if we're not involved in the group stages of the champions league, or latter stages of the europa league, then our (unnoficial) policy of buying cheap and selling for a substantial profit will be blown clean out of the water!

imagine the next 2 years with the squad we have, we could sell the players mentioned above, right now for £40m+ EASY! 2 years down the line with no progress in europe whatsoever, and no old firm games, you'd be lucky to get £10m for them.

i totally believe in speculate to accumulate, it has cost us league titles in the past, when we should really have buried that mob a long time ago. Celtic have been guilty of this for decades now, and it doesn't mean we need to put ourselves in financial peril, just a sensible signing policy and a will to succeed is all that's needed. forget the ludicrous roy keane/freddie ljunberg/juninho shenanigans, that money would have been better spent on a proven centre half/keeper/striker.

i can't fault Peter Lawell for what he's done, in fact i believe he's been one of the best signings Celtic have ever made, but i certainly do believe this is the time we need to make strides in europe, now that we are pretty much guaranteed league winners for the foreseeable future, and invest in the team rather than rest on our laurels and be bogged down by mediocrity

taco

Agree0 Disagree0

Couldn't agree more. We will be pumped out of Europe at the first hurdle if we're not careful and will go even further down the seeding pecking order which will mean we will probably never have a chance at a run in the money spinning CL. Every single observer will tell you our defence is week and vulnerable. Why not bring in a bit of quality now to give us a chance and if it doesn't work then Ki and Wanyama may have to be sold to cover the loss. If we don't do anything and go out they will need to shift players anyway. By doing nothing we could end up with the worst from every scenario.

Agree0 Disagree0

Taco

100% mate. I couldnt agree more.

People are obviously lacking in the understanding department when it comes to reading posts.
No-one on here is happy we are NOT spending. No-one is happy NOT to play in the Champions League. We all know the team NEEDS strengthening - but at what cost to the club?
I am posting because people in fantasy-land are demanding we spend millions, usually on has-beens. Price tags and big wages do not mean they are better players and guarantee success.
We had to cut our squad size and wage bill. We are in the middle of the largest recession in modern times. UEFA are pushing through financial fair-play rules in the next 3-5 years. Rangers have wrecked the Scottish football landscape only weeks ago - who knows how it will pan out. Surely caution is required over the coming months?
It has been mentioned that "If it doesn't work out sell players" You make it sound so easy. That will have to be in the January transfer window then - when no-one buys anyway, and when others know we are desperate to sell, so they drive the price down further. Players might still be cup-tied for Europe as well.
Trust me, I am not against spending money - only money we definitely have. We cannot go on the assumption our squad is worth millions - only when another club gets the cheque-book out and buys them are they worth anything! Why haven't we sold anyone yet? Because no-one is buying players - not even Man City yet.
All I'm saying is be realistic in your expectations or you will be very disappointed -
FFS are Rangers not an example to everyone?..................kbt1978

Agree0 Disagree0

As i said in a previou spost

spending big doesn't guarantee you success. A lot of posters seem to think this is true. What would you rather have?

Fortune, Scheidt and Berkovic

OR

Larsson, Lubo and Bobo

I know what i would rather have, and it cost less than £1 million in transfer fees

Agree with Jamie mac and Brian, I made a comment couple of days ago and got shot down although they were also opinions so fair doos!
Nobody's askin the board to spend 7-12 mil FFS..... A decent centre half and a striker will do, if 1 or 2 more then great.
We're in in a great position for the nxt yr or 3 to be playin champs lge Fitbaw and if a couple of players at £500,000 turn out to be diamonds then brilliant if not then its no worse than not givin it a shot!

Hope the same guys that don't think we should spend a few £ don't come back on here a start shoutin about PL and NL for the sack if we don't get past Helsinki and so on!.......

Bigbadjohn

Agree0 Disagree0

Ok then Samson let's go the other route

N'Guemo, cha and Murphy
Or
Brown,Sutton and big joos.

The bottom line is those amongst us saying keep things tight have fallen into the trap set by the board and their apparent scaremongering. They've cost us titles with not forking out and now they're potentially putting our team at risk of being dismantled.

That'll be ok so long as there's money in the bank will it? Get a grip of yourselves and use your own minds to come to a decision, don't just buy into the financial meltdown crack that's being bandied around.

we were told our finances didn't depend on them, so prove it!!

Add up two years of dans wages and one of Kelvin Wilsons- there's a decent transfer fee right there.

Prudence can cost, cost us 10 twice by not signing Fletcher so if times are gonna be as tough as the pessimists on here say then surely we can't miss out again?

Fans put in money hand over fiat- the board have a duty to the average fan not just those of us who own shares. We have the assets to cover a punt this time

Team sheet not balance sheet for once

Jamie Mac(having none of this bs)

Agree0 Disagree0

I dont think anyon'es suggesting we break the bank kbt1978, but £3m for guys like Ciani should be what we're looking at, instead we're already out of the running for some reason.

remember as well, we've already shaved about 80k a week off the wage bill, and probably a lot more to come before the end of the season, so theoretically we could be looking at saving £4m per year just on wages saved! that practically wipes out our debt

taco

Agree0 Disagree0

I would love to see a break down of the wages that have left............ kbt1978

John Mensah has expressed an interest in joining Celtic this summer. The 29-year-old defender is a free agent after leaving Lyon and has been linked with moves to Bordeaux and Trabzonspor. But the Ghana international has chosen to praise Celtic, while admitting he is in no rush to commit to a deal.

samson

Believable5 Unbelievable4

As a Sunderland fan John Mensah is a very good defender and is very strong who would do well in the spl and champions league. He is very experienced

Agree2 Disagree2

Thanks fur that marty oneel

Agree1 Disagree1

Him saying he's not in any hurry to commit to a deal is him essentially telling all interested parties to make an offer to him.

hi ed to you know if there will be anymore players leaving. i thought ipswich where looking at murphy and blackpool at mc court, is the ki deal still on and have there been any offers for rasmussen. {Ed007's Note - Ipswich were priced out of buying Murphy, CFC are not being greedy with the fee it is more Murphy's wages that are the problem. Blackpool's offer for McCourt is still on the table and there is still interest from the MLS in him. QPR are still hopeful of signing Ki but he is at the Olympics. I don't know of any bids for Rasmussen but hopefully a Scandinavian team take him off our hands.}

Believable0 Unbelievable4

Cheers ed thanks for the quick reply as always. {Ed007's Note - No probs mate.}

love the site ed u do a great job read everyday but first time posting. do you think we could get Cristian Benitez to partner Hooper as he is a physical presence and has a great workrate. is he still at santos laguna or has he moved on just saw on main site that swansea were interested in him. also think we really need another defender i would like matthew upson he doesnt get a game for stoke but has bags of experience even if its a loan deal but we need someone asap and i dont think we will get Ciani he is 2 good for SPL {Ed007's Note - Welcome to the site mate and thanks. Benitez moved to Club America (the team Juarez has signed for) in 2011. He would be a fantastic signing IMO, I'm not so sure about Upson though.}

Believable1 Unbelievable1

Couple EPL teams looking at Benitez 2-3mil,
Agree that he would be a good singing for Celtic tho

I posted yesteday that I had sent an e-mail to Sly sports asking why they had removed the listings for SPL teams and lumped all Scottish teams together in a Scottish League section Lo and behold I see today that they
have rectified this.
PS The newco are in the scottish league section. JK

Media understands that Scottish Premier League champions Celtic have made an approach for West Brom forward Simon Cox.

samson

Believable5 Unbelievable10

Fantastic player, hope we get him

Tassie

Agree0 Disagree4

Tassie you need to get to specsavers. The guy is 1 session in China Buffet from looking like Mick Quinn.

Agree2 Disagree0

Can't see what cox would give to the team other than take stokes place when he's not up for it? Don't understand, but hey I usually have to eat my hat and will do again if the move goes through an prove to be a good addition.

Bigbadjohn

Agree1 Disagree0

^^ LOL
I quite like Simon Cox tbh, could do a job for us no doubt about it...........
I would have prefered Doyle though if given the choice!
Surely we could get a player or two from P'Mouth... we have already missed out on Marko Futacs and I have a feeling that we will probably try and get that Huseklepp guy........ but we will probably not bother, just like the last 3 attempts to sign him!

Agree1 Disagree0

Cox simply not good enough, bet Watt would get more goals than him next season.

Agree2 Disagree1

Not good enough definately a Cox up ,leave him where he is
