Chris Davis playing it coy regarding transfer activity in January and doesn't envisage it being particularly busy. He's either playing it cagey or Ped Lawwell has told him to get out there and nip the clamour for CB'S a goalie and RB in the budget. Not exactly expecting 3 or 4 marquee signings but surely Marvin Compper isn't the one and only.

If we sign this guy then we still need cover for RB. Lustig and Gamboa will be at the World Cup and will miss the CL qualifiers for us. So all we will have is Ralston. Surely not going to have another qualifying campaign of square peg round holes, making players play in unnatural positions to cover injuries.

Marvin Compper is due in Glasgow today to finalise his move to Celtic after he held talks with RB Leipzig yesterday over his future.

Think this is an OK signing but not exciting.
We really need cover for left back and CB this provides that.
I still think we will be bringing in at least 1 more defender though.

So we are signing a 32 year old who has not been playing and possibly a young CB from Dundee. Don't see either as being any better to what we have. Starting to look like penny pinching again getting players for £800,000 and on pre contracts rather than pushing the boat out for real class, i thought this would be an area we would try to get real quality but it looks like squad players and back to quantity rather than quality. Hope i am proved wrong but i ain't impressed.

Stan I know a couple of St Pauli fans, and they really rate Compper, they say he has lost his way a bit ( ring any bells Sinclair? ) Been told he is a good solid pro and will organise our defence and add some experience. He may even be used like Toure was to guide the young players like Ajer.
Let's give the guy a chance.

I don't know anything about him Tim other than what I have read on here and elsewhere and it was grim reading so i am shocked about what our scouts have seen in him, infact when have they watched him if he hasn't been playing that is another concern we buying him based on footage from a year ago. I know Caulker has not played much football either but at 25, an English cap and potential to get back to his best he would be a better choice for me.

Ed, you mention Lustig. I'm surprised he has not been used at CB more often. I suppose Ralstons injury had a lot to do with it but going by Ajers performance mid week he looks like he is more than capable of slotting in at RB also.

{Ed007's Note - Ajer did look comfortable at RB but it was against Accies. Lustig's spoke for years about moving to CB to prolong his career but I think he would struggle at any higher level than SPFL. If it was me going to play Lustig at CB I would do it with him as the central player in a back 3 where you don't need much pace.}

ED007 why all the negativity over Compper, surely we should trust Brendan's and the scouts judgement, also I agree young Ajer needs more game time, but he came as a defensive misfielder why not play him there behind Brown. Lustig, sadly to me looks like his best days are behind him with his lack of pace.
Also ED007 I remember in the summer you championing Caulker for us, is all his troubles behind him, because we do not want or need another troublemaker in the dressing room, ala Commons or Stokes.

{Ed007's Note - How the Hell can you compare Caulker's problems to Commons and the trouble he caused? I doubt Caulker's alcoholism, gambling addiction or depression will rub off on any young players.
I just don't see any point in the Compper signing, it's up there with Gamboa and Hayes deals and goes against everything we've been told our player recruitment policy is for the last few years. And it pushes Ajer further down the list for game time. Play Ajer in behind Brown? Surely we should trust Brendan's and coaches judgement that he's a CB? ;)

This guy is only about a year older the Izzy and no one would have moaned about him still being Tierneys back up.
We've all moaned about having to biton at CB and having no cover for Tierney but when it's being addressed people are still moaning.
The window hasn't even opened yet and people talking like it's just about to close and that's our only signing.

So is this guy being bought as back up? How is that going to solve our defensive issues. If we are going to go get 2 CBs they need to be better than what we have if not we are just going to be stockpile fringe players. Bit strange after BR saying it will be quality over quantity. Expecting Eric to leave so that leaves us with Boyata, Simunovic, Ajer, Compper, and if rumours about Caulker and Hendry are true that is 6 CBs to keep happy. Doesn't add up unless we are selling and putting Ajer out on loan.

If some of the rumours are true regarding the new centre back, Rogers must surely rate him quite highly. Private jets and private tours around the ground and dinner with Rogers seems like he is going the extra bit to impress him. If true, it seems strange especially if he’s just a squad player / back up?

It would not bother me if he was sold Ed. I thought he did well to fight his way back into the team last season and scored some very good goals, i was also impressed with his attitude being out street running at 4am in the morning but there has been far too many mistakes this season and the worse has been the failure to even play a 5 yard pass to feet. Have you noticed teams are now going direct towards our CBs rather than using the flanks. That tells its own story.

Can we all at least give the boy a chance, I'm not saying he will have the same effect but can anyone remember the way people reacted when we signed a wee 33yr old Slovakian from a fighting relegation in the German league.

{Ed007's Note - What's signing Lubo got to do with it, don't you remember Freddie Ljungberg? He was the same age as Compper is when we signed him and that's got nothing to do with it either. The Lubo comparison is up there with the 'he'll give us experience' rubbish. We don't need experience we need quality.}

A could do a better job than jozo at the minute we've got to give commper a chance and then we can judge at 32 there's no sell on but for less than a mill and if he does ok for a few seasons it might be decent business although ad love caulker as well.
