Rhodes left out of the Huddersfield squad for their game tonight - interest in him must be getting serious whether it's from us or a club down south. Maybe our injury list is forcing the board's hand into making a proper move?

Rhodes was injured for the game tonight

Agree1 Disagree1

Rhodes just back after scotland game so cant see him being fit enough. would love to see him at celtic but hudersfield want 8m and we wont spend more than a few million on any one player

Agree1 Disagree0

Why buy 3 diddy strikers for 2m each if we can get one good one for 4 or 5m? We're not talking about a Van Persie or a Kaka here..5m would get him signed

THE impact of Celtic's Youth Academy, highlighted by the club's continued involvement in the elite European NextGen Series, has been further enhanced by an invitation to be one of the first teams to play at the newly-opened St George's Park, the FA's National Football Centre.

The superb state-of-the-art complex at Burton-upon-Trent is the FA's flagship for the future of football and two young Celtic teams will travel down on Friday and stay in the top-class hotel facilities there before playing on Saturday.

A Youth Squad and the Development Squad will take on the Under-18 and Under-21 sides of Fulham at 2pm

Under-17 to Under-20 Professional Academy Manager, Tommy McIntyre said: "All of the players, and indeed the coaches, are really looking forward to this weekend's match against Fulham at St George's Park.

"It is an incredible complex and the on-site facilities are second to none. Playing Fulham will be a good test for our players as they are a very good and well-organised team."

It is hoped that the young Hoops will revisit St George's Park again throughout the season and Development Squad coach, Steve Frail, added: "We are all looking forward to our trip to St George's Park this weekend to play Fulham.

"We will travel down on Friday, staying at the on-site hotel within the complex, which is outstanding.

"Although we have many tough games ahead of us as this season as we again participate in the NextGen Series, Fulham will be a tough test and a welcome challenge."

The training complex, the base of the England national side, has 12 full-sized pitches, one of them indoors, and a full range of other coaching facilities including a bespoke Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation & Performance Centre and two on-site hotels.

In this season's NextGen Series, Celtic's Under-19s are in Group Four along with PSV Eindhoven, Aston Villa and Sporting Lisbon.

The young Hoops kick-off their Euro campaign when they meet Sporting Lisbon at Firhill on Thursday, September 6.

Prices at the gate on the night will be £5 for adults and £2 for children.

And this is the reason we should not be splashing cash unless we really have to.These kids get invited everywhere cos of one thing.THEY ARE GOOD.Lets start giving them their head and our full support.............green jhedi

Agree1 Disagree0

It is brilliant that our youth/development set up is 2nd to none but I still feel that we should be bringing in a few quality signings with a few to advancing our youngsters. Few quality players, coupled a lesser squad and high makes.sends.to me.

Agree1 Disagree0

All the profits from The Paradise Windfall go directly to Youth Development ( I was a seller for 10 years) - It's the biggest same day football draw in the World . I know it's 2 now but well worth it . {Ed007's Note - The Celtic Pools have been putting money into youth development for years as well.}

Agree0 Disagree0

This is the kind of thing that should be highlighted in the Scottish tabloids instead of the doom & gloom propaganda we are subjected to on a daily basis (assuming you buy the papers).

Celtic defender Josh Thompson will on Monday join Portsmouth on a six-month loan, Sly Spurts sources understand.

The 21-year-old centre-back has been training with the League One club but they could not quite agree a deal in time for Saturday's first game of the season against Bournemouth.

Financially-stricken Portsmouth had previously been under a transfer embargo after going into administration but they are now free to sign players.

Ten new faces arrived at Fratton Park on Thursday and Thompson will at the beginning of next week also move to the South Coast.

The former England Under 19 international joined Celtic back in 2009 from Stockport County for £300,000 and he has one year left on his current contract.

Thompson ended last season at Wembley on loan with Johnstone's Paint Trophy winners Chesterfield after starting the campaign with Championship outfit Peterborough United.

Jungle Bhoy.

Believable5 Unbelievable3

I thought he was decent when he had a run in the first team even scored a few times i hope we give him a new contract

Agree0 Disagree1

Decent player but with our defence should be pushing for 1st team. Maybe should let him go rather than loan

Agree1 Disagree0

We'll never know if he would have been a good player cos Mowbray was forced to throw him in far too early and it's Been Detrimental to his development. Horror show in our 4-4 draw with Aberdeen the the mother of all horror shows with his other 10 team mates against Ross County in the cup semi's. His confidence was shattered before he even got going. He never hid though so fair play to him for that. Good luck to the lad wherever he ends up.

Was played on his weaker side to accomodate mcmanus and odea but when played on his better foot played out of his skin for such a young lad

HE is remembered as one of the greatest ever Celts, the midfielder whose precision passing set the pace of play for the all-conquering Lisbon Lions. "As far as I'm concerned, said his former manager, Jock Stein, "Bobby Murdoch was just about the best player I had as a manager." Today would have been Bobby's 68th birthday and he was born on this day in 1944. He made 485 appearances for the club he loved, scoring 102 goals and winning the European Cup, eight league championships, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups. He passed away in May 2001, but his loss is still keenly felt by his fellow Lions and the entire Celtic family. He is pictured here, overwhelmed by emotion and swamped by supporters in the wake of the European Cup triumph. Bobby's achievements and his commitment as a true Celt will never be forgotten.

Hi Ed have you heard anything about paddy McCourt going to Hibs? {Ed007's Note - No sorry. The only interest I know of is from the Championship, mainly Blackpool who have made a bid of around £600k which hasn't been accepted or rejected yet, and from the MLS.}

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Serious question? Why do Celtic fans always add an h. E.g bhoys and ghirls? Sorry for my ignorance?

Agree0 Disagree0

Dont know much about why or when Celtic were started to be reffered to as 'The Bhoys' but Bhoys or b'hoys was a 19th century american slang word for Irish immigrants which is maybe why it came about due to our heritage. The 'h' in ghirls is obviously just an add on to refer to our good ladies.

Mikey Bhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

Did some research and found a couple of references first was a postcard from an Irishman just after 1888 when he described Celtic as "the bould bhoys" but even before this as Mikey Bhoy says it was a slang term used in america to describe Irish men and was not meant to be a compliment.
Also later on people used the term Timalloys said quickly rhymes with Bhoys
hope this helps Timalloy (historian)

"We have looked at a couple of players, but we have been put off by wage demands or prices."

Neil Lennons words. That statement tells me Rhodes is a definite no go with price unfortunetly. Gutted, boy is going to be superstar!

Hopefully NL + PL can put a few deals together though!

Huddersfield want £8m for Jordan Rhodes. I'm sorry but that is just far too much for someone like him. He may score tons of goals but that is just them being cheeky. Celtic = far bigger club than Huddersfield. Being priced out of a quality player and teams like Fulham etc. are prepared to bid that sort of money for him! Ridiculous.

Believable7 Unbelievable5

I agree this is too much but I think this is just paper talk.

Agree1 Disagree0

If we are looking for 7m for KI why then not 8M for Rhodes. Most people agree Rhodes is/ will be money and goals in the bank. Goal scorers are expensive and Huddersfield have discounted him to 8M due to his inexperience. I agree its a huge sum but that is the world we live in and he has massive potential. Sopot Celt

Agree0 Disagree0

Pretty much right on all counts, expect for the fact that Huddersfield can ask for how ever much they want for Rhodes, seeing as they don't need the money, and Jordan is happy to stay. He has never even hinted that he's wanted to play anywhere else this season. Don't see why people can't get that as the reason for the high price into their heads

Agree0 Disagree0

No one will pay 8mil for him thats a fact. thats just crazy, i would say 5mil bid would be accepted if someone offers it.

Celticthomas

Agree0 Disagree0

Hooper never scored as many last season and we would want similar amount for him.. so no they are not being cheeky. i say pay what they want . he is worth that .. i mean wolves have turned down 13 m for fletcher and he is not as good as rhodes ..shamrock

Agree0 Disagree0

Are Celtic as big a club as you think then if they cant afford their man? 8million is a lot but Huddersfield have the right to make money from him as they grew his talent.

Agree0 Disagree0

No one will spend 8 mill on him,if they did,they will go in to an asylum.He has done nothing yet....3 mill max,and thats a gamble... {Ed007's Note - At 8 million plus VAT it would take the deal up to 9.6 million, include agent fees etc and the price will be over 10 million not including the player's signing on fee and wages nobody is going to spend that on a League 1 player.}

Agree1 Disagree0

Shamrock 100% disagree FLETCHER scored 12 EPL GOALS with a very poor team, bet RHODES WOULDNT HAVE GOT THAT,FLETCHER IS SO UNDER ESTIMATED UP HERE ITS SO SAD, WE CANT SEE THE WOOD FOR THE TREES,ALSO HOOPER HAS SCORED AT A HIGHER LEVEL THAN RHODES. I LIKE RHODES BUT WE REALLY ARE GOING OVERBOARD....jimthetim

Agree0 Disagree0

6m (4m upfront & 2m after promotion) was offered by West Ham in January, why would Huddersfield accept anything below the minimum price when they don't need to sell him {Ed007's Note - West Ham did not offer that. Karen Brady leaked the story to appease the West Ham fans, just like their attempt to buy Jelavic. West Ham have been struggling financially for years and still are.}

Agree0 Disagree0

In the English market, that figure is realistic for a lad with an abundance of goals and plenty potential. Levein should be on a bung for upping his price after Wednesday - not too mention pricing him out of our budget. Even if we do sell Ki for a similar fee We won't spend it on one player and the frustrating thing is we were watching Rhodes over a year ago and as usual farted about and ended up signing Bangura.

Jungle Jim

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with you jimthetim Fletcher is proven it at a team like wolves. Thats why he will get a move back to the prem and right into a starting lineup. Rhodes will take some time to develop and 8 miliion is a big gamble for someone who has not played at that high a level. Boy seems to be able to score tho and am sure he will get a chance somewhere. Would like it to be at Celtic but not for 8 million. Where ever he goes all the best and hope he keeps doing it for Scotland

Skooter

Agree0 Disagree0

Wouldn't pay any more than 3million for him

Agree0 Disagree0

Rhodes scored 40 in a very poor team.. shamrock

Agree0 Disagree0

Like Michael laudrup said on Tuesday "there is no value in the English Market" way over valued. Keep him. Let John parks unearth another gem.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sunderland signed wickman for 8 mil rising to 11. U have to imagine someone in the epl will pay that money for rhodes

Agree0 Disagree0

If you can't afford to shop in M&S, go to Aldi!

Rhodes is worth what Huddersfield set as his price. If Celtic think that he is not worth it then OK, look elsewhere. Someone in EPL will pay it, if not now, then at Christmas-but by then the fee could be higher!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - At 8 million plus VAT it would take the deal up to 9.6 million, include agent fees etc and the price will be over 10 million not including the player's signing on fee and wages nobody is going to spend that on a League 1 player.}

Why lie ? Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain {Ed007's Note - Lie about what? AOC's total fee including add ons is 15 million, not his initial fee and the deal is all structured how successful Arsenal are and his own personal success.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Still possible to sell on for more, that is the risk in Scotland, it's a formality your value soars in england.

i dont understand all this negativity about signings, yes we are short of a few players for the C/L tie, but we do have enough quality and depth compared to helsinbergs in that we should see them off over two legs, put it this way would 2 key signings make a difference at this stage, no, it could have an adverse effect as players cant just be thrown into games and need time to settle.
in my own opinion PL and NL will have targets in mind, there will be negotitions going on in the background, we dont have this spattered all over the media like other clubs, also youth is the way forward, to spend 5 or 6 mill on a player, is still a risk, with potentially little retirn on investment, the way forward is a few potential youngsters with promise, and a huge sell on value if the prove themselves, Wanyama, Ki, Kayal, Hooper, Mcgeogh, Forrest, Mathews are all examples of being shrewd in the transfer market, and yes we have had duds, Bangura, Wilson, but this is the way forward for now, i would love to see a marque signing, but in this economic climate its a risk, loan players could be the way forward this year when the EPL make their list of 25, so some top players will be frozen out, so possibilities will open up before transfer window opens. business will be going on between NL, PL and agents, also our scouting system will have identified 2 or 3, so i would expect 1 maybe 2 players to leave, and maybe 1 big signing, 1 other major signing, both around the 2-3 mill mark, a couple of 1 year loans and maybe 2 potential youngsters for around 600k each, so if we get 7-8 mill for Ki, the above will balance the books, not to mention the wage bill has been dramaticaly reduced this season

Believable3 Unbelievable5

I agree with your post and had my doubts regarding Wilson in particular, but I thought he had a really good game against Madrid. Regarding Bangura, I think it's too early to judge him, he's been injured so until he has some real game time we shouldn't criticise imo.

HH

Agree1 Disagree0

Yes PL will have targets in mind, and then fail to get them yet again on the last day of the transfer market (sorry i tried people, and remember keep spending yer cash) but we do have a large squad (full of mediocre at best players) keep swallowing PL lies. We will walk the SPL and should be pushing to get into the champs league and producing a good showing. I can see yet another season of useless loan signings even after ki is sold on. KEVSPR

Agree0 Disagree0

Absolutely correct youth is the way forward I've said for a long time youth is the way forward, buy by all means but only if it significantly improves the squad we have.

Checking over the posts over the last few days, there seems to be a lot of panicking going on. There are a few facts that stare us squarely in the face.
1. Like it or lump it, we will have a shortfall of domestic cash this year because Sevconians have dropped out of the league. Old firm game revenues are gone and tv money will be significantly lower.
2. We are a big fish in a small pond, attracting top class footballers is difficult, even with the promise of European football.
3. Money will, and always will talk for most players. It is a short career after all, as they say and we can't compete on wages, that's the truth of the matter.
4. Celtic, although we all love our football club, at the end of the day is a business and PL is a businessman. He has to be showing a control on our finances, as well as supporting NL and the team. This is a double edged sword, get it wrong and we could be the next Sevconians.
I've no doubt Lenny will be given some money to play with, and I'm also under no doubt there are deals in place. How we fare against Helsingborg will determine how we go forward. Remember, we also have a few years to get this right due to the circumstances.
Personally, I feel the Helsingborg ties are the biggest challenge we have had for years. Getting through these games will be the maker or breaker.
On another note, I am emailing ITV today to insist Clive Tyldesley and Andy "apples and pears" Townsend don't commentate on the game next week!

BigRab

Believable8 Unbelievable3

Agree 100%. we have to control our finances. I would love to see players signing for big fees but look at what we have done for little money. I have loved seeing players coming in and turning into top drawer footballers. This is what we need to keep doing.

Agree0 Disagree0

BigRab:- Always watch ITV with the mute button on you'll find you'll enjoy it better. As for analysis you'll probably find your wife/partner/kids/dog/cat will provide more insight to the game than Andy Townsend.
Allybhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

Fair enough but we have saved in the region of 100k a week on wages with the players who have been released. We could have at least brought in a decent CB on loan. We are going into a massive tie with a number of players either injured or carrying knocks.
It's okay to reduce the size of the squad but you still have to ensure that the squad is large enough to deal with the number of competitive games coming up. Although the game against Real Madrid brought us 1m & exposure to the US market, if we crash out of the Champions League due to the number of injuries from that game would we say it was worth it?

AldoBhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

I like Townsend and he has always said good things about our club. The other one a do agree with he is a clown! F.S

Agree0 Disagree0

As a fan of Celtic for over 50years the lack of spending when we have had a chance to move forward is frightening,we do not want to be the next Rangers but over the years the money generated through players being sold has never been spent ie Dalglish ,Nicholas the list is endless.Just for once push the boat out get Rhodes!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Spending five or six million won't put us in the old Co position for God sakes folks think about it!

If they are scaling down football operations due to old Co, then the season book and ticket prices should be scaled down also.

The board are very much having their cake and eating it too.

Pathetic people seem to think being shortchanged is acceptable

Jamie Mac(shaking his head)

Agree0 Disagree0

BARRY THE JANNY .... totally agree with aldo money must be spent and players must be brought in to bolster the squad afterall the Boss did say that he was going to trim the squad for quality signings . I do think we WILL spend but only at the right price with a future sell on value this is the way ahead... u agree

Agree0 Disagree0

Why does everyone think that the Fraudsters F.C. will cost us money. The game which replaces the ex old firm game, I.e. Hearts, Aberdeeen or Dundee United should be a sell out as near as makes no difference. We will spend less on policing and stewards, we will not require a massive empty security gap and most of all, we will not have a giant bill for vandalism. The difference in T.V. Money is negligible and we are guaranteed Euro cash for at least four years. So stop greeting and let's get on with it.
C'mon The Hoops

When i posted this what i was meanin was will NL get all the budget but i didnt mean for just 1 player , of course celtic have a great scouting system out there and PL knows that signing young is the way ahead , but surely if celtic are wanting to progress in the champions league they must also invest in experiance also , so i hopefully a good big CB and let young rhodes run amoke in SPL .... any thoughts

Believable6 Unbelievable1

I agree i think that if we can get rhodes and berra and possibly gary mackay stevens. I would be more than happy. NL will need tl start bringing through some of the younger talent from the development squad etc. we dont want to get to the point that we are creating top quality players but cant give them the stage to shine. i agree with the policy PL is putting in place. but i still think we need to reduce the squad and i think it will be murphy & ki to go. while i am on my rant i wud ask everyone to pack out celtic park at everyhome game iam sick listening to sevco fans going on about us getting 45k fans for first game. and how sell out saturday was a flop. hail hail.
