Was speaking to an old pal of mine who is a small shareholder. He said Paul Hartley is in for an interview this tuesday. Have you heard anything about this Ed.

This whole supposed interview process terrifies me. In business in general you only find out a tiny little bit about someone at an interview, even that might be flawed because people act, it's like watching a player on YouTube - you only see the good bits. You don't find out how they deal with proper pressure, how they deal with millionaire players and if they can impress for 3 years as opposed to half an hour. We all know the story - Ronny got interviewed for the no 2 role, was very impressive so got offered the managers job, what? That was the first thing that worries me, nothing to do with Ronny, simply in general how you can change your thinking so much that he goes from no 1 to no 2 in the space of an afternoon. His CV didn't change, neither did his background, so he must have spoke well, came across well/ confident and had good ideas. Life doesn't work like that. The board better get this decision right. In my lifetime I never remember so many good managers being out a job, there is no excuses this time for hiring a Lennon, or anything remotely similar. We all want someone who will blow us away, and someone who has done it, and not spoke about doing it. I like Hartley, and would have him before others like Stubbs and Neil Lennon, but we need someone even better, someone who will really command respect from everyone inside the club the second he walks in the door!

I would have loved to have kept Deila in some capacity. However I don't agree with interviewing for assistant manager because the manager has to he able to bring his own guys whom he knows and trusts. I believe was part of the problem for Ronny.

Delphic, what process would you suggest instead of an interview process? Weird post mate. Celtic aren't man city or Chelsea where we can just through money at a manger (their fees and the players they want) . Whoever comes in will HAVE to work with what we've got and work to the specifications of the board and our finances. If not a process how would we find out our ideal candidate?

In fairness, you're getting mad that they are doing an interview process which is done in every single job capacity. For some people there is no right answer and just want to moan, it allows the club to see if both are happy with the situation being imposed which for ronny seemed the case or he wouldn't have taken the job. That never worked fair enough but what is to happen for the next manager just tell someone that it's their job now do as you please?

I suggested 3 Italian managers (Cesare Prandelli, Luciano Spalletti, Walter Mazzarri) 6 months ago, it was before Ranieri won the league and they were in vogue again. I just thought the 3 were a good age, had good experience, and basically said I liked their mentality and that Italians settle well here because of the community. They were all out a job also. Anyway since then Spalletti has went to Roma after Rudi Garcia left, and Mazzarri is about to go to Watford. I also think the league in Italy is still brilliant tactically, and their teams are the most street wise. I'd be delighted with Prandelli or Rudi Garcia, well before they get snapped up also!

Stick in salami and pepperoni as well. Not sure of their managerial skills but they make a fine pizza.

Delphic, I was a big fan of Mazzarri when he was at Napoli. He managed to create a great togetherness within the squad, similar to Ranieri at Leicester although he unfortunately came up against a terrific Juventus team.

Delphic it's easy to rhyme off names that are out of work or people we want as manager but these guys have to want to come to Scottish football. Just now rumours are flying around with numerous posters telling us they know something most if not all will be garbage. Leagues in Europe are just finishing so it might take a couple of weeks to see the managerial merry-go-round kick in as I now doubt it will be anyone currently out a job as there would be no reason not to have him in place by now. I've no doubt when the manager is selected there will be people telling us I told you so but it will probably be a guess😂.

How was it a weird post CMcBhoy? I explained what I meant. The board knows what it will be spending, will know the salary they are offering so what will a half hour chat tell them. They'll already know if he has 20 years experience working in good leagues and/ or big clubs. They'll know what he's won, whether he's had problems with anything, how good he is in the transfer market etc etc etc. The board should know who they want, even a first and second choice. Supposedly Malky McKay was interviewed last week also. I could go on a 2 week holiday with McKay, think it was the best 2 weeks of my life, think he knows the game inside out/ has great ideas, I wouldn't give him the job though. As well as the poor PR and the potential things that could happen because of the texts etc I wouldn't do it. And I'm not being precious - if he had an incredible record I would take the chance but I don't like the style of football he played. He was also average in the transfer market, and after doing a fairly good job at Cardiff was rotten at Wigan. You tell me - do you think Ronny should have went from a No 1 to a No 2 purely on being great at an interview? And I would say the same about anyone, not because it's Ronny.

And DB92 - I'm not just on to have a moan. A football manager is hardly the same as a job interview where you might have to speak to 20 people and only know their name and a few other details. It's fairly easy to find out info about people in football, and like I said, you obviously already know what leagues they've worked in, the pressure they've been under, and what they've won. Ronny said a couple of days ago that he became a recluse because it all became too much. He had only worked in Norway, at a small club, so it's not a huge surprise. That's fact, - how can impressing at an interview alter any of it? I'm not saying that we don't speak to whoever we want, simply that we shouldn't be having a list, and interviews. We already know about Malky McKay. We already know that Hartley has done a great job in Scotland, but only Scotland, and under no pressure. We already know Rodgers plays the game the right way, has been at a huge club with huge pressure, and is super confident bordering on narcissism. And we already know Moyes is brilliant in the transfer market but the football he plays is pretty average. The man in the street knows all that.

No matter a candidates qualifications they need to be interviewed. Whether its to see if they're a fit for us or if we're a fit for them. I said it's a weird post because how could you possibly think we shouldn't interview? I would never take anyone on without speaking to them no matter the hype around them as they just might not fit. I don't see why it should be different for football clubs. Even the biggest managers in the world speak to clubs.

And yes I do think Ronny should have got the job as he was the best candidate that wanted the job at the time.

You should read what I say, and answer what I ask instead of trying to back up your argument. I didn't say we shouldn't speak to them, you have to discuss contracts, plans etc, I'm not mental. I said we shouldn't be going through an interview process from a list. The lad initially mentioned Hartley, I mentioned McKay who was supposedly interviewed last week, I heard Davie Hay touch on that. What in the name of God could either say in an interview to make you think they are ready for the Celtic job. We've been through this crap I don't know how many times with your Mowbrays etc, we know Coyle, Keane and Ronny had interviews. We need someone better. We should have someone in mind, maybe even an alternative then speak to him/ them. I also didn't ask if you wanted Ronny - I asked if he should have went from assistant to manager in the space of an afternoon, because he came across well. I don't care who it was, that process is primitive!

Agree with cmc there mate, just saying that at the end of the day it's still a job and every club interview for a managers position for the fit of everyone involved. I think you're right in the majority of what you say but to be in anger that they're interviewing candidates for a role because you have an opinion of who it should be is ludicrous. Of course you can get an idea of someone's personality but there is people they need to work with at board level and around it whom they need to be at least familiar with before they accept a job.

The job is a bit of career suicide for any big managers right now, if we win it's expected and if we lose its a shambles. That's the only fear I have for the club at the moment. But here's hoping.

Tell me this then - if Owen Coyle went in for an interview tomorrow, he came across great, said everything Lawwell wanted to hear, - average salary, work on a low budget, bring through youth. Then Roy Keane went in and was a little more demanding, he was looking quite serious, didn't say much, wasn't overly happy, and made it clear he wanted a bigger salary, and a decent budget, he would also only use kids when it suited him. Finally Martin O'Neill went in and did his usual - he sits like a Philadelphia lawyer, acts a little peculiar, hardly looks Peter Lawwell in the eye. He then demands 4 times what Coyle wants, wants a bit of a war chest, and like he did previously, couldn't care less about our youth policy. I would go for O'Neill, then Keane, then Coyle. What about you 2 guys? And none of that is fanciful, I think I've been pretty realistic/ honest about how they would act. The country is full of politicians who stand and talk nonsense all day, if you didn't know better you would think what they were saying was true, I'm sure they would be great at interviews also, if I owned a business though they wouldn't get in the car park!

And I wouldn't go for O'Neill, for a few reasons, one of which being that he is selfish and doesn't think long term, my point was I would still have him before Coyle even if he was a disgrace at the interview, and Owen Coyle was incredible. You could be the biggest sycophant that ever walked the earth and when you get the job do the complete opposite. I would prefer to decide on who I want, after doing plenty of research and speaking to respected people, if you find out they would be happy to chat to you about the job it would be in the knowledge you want them, and will make an offer. I'm not into going through lists. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same list that Lawwell put together when he walked through the door. As for even all the big clubs carrying out interviews, I think you might find that it's the manager interviewing the club.
