The number 7 is famous at Celtic for obvious reasons, with a suite at Celtic park named in its honour.
Players who have wore the number 8 have been very loyal to our club.
Paul McStay wore it since 1982 when selected. McStay was given 8 when squad numbers were introduced in 1992.
A couple of years after Paul retired, Alan Thompson was awarded the number 8 and when Thommo left Our captain Broony took on this well served number.
Its great to think of the honours won by these 3 players in the last 37 years.

Don't know where you got your info for that but Mcstay was wearing the number 8 well before the 90s.
He wore it all during the centenary year.
He was wearing it long before numbers were put on our jersey, when we just had them on our shorts.

{Ed007's Note - Remember it was always just 1-11, Kev...

In fact he was wearing number 8 around 83/ 84. Dave proven was wearing 7 back then.
Mcstay worn number 8 in both the 1984 and 1985 Scottish cup finals.

I knew he did wear 7 early on ed but by time he made CM his own he wore the number 8 more than he didn't.

{Ed007's Note - I'm just meaning back then numbers were more about the players' position on the park than anything else.}

Kev read my post again. I mention he wore 8 from 82 .
He wore 8 in his debut v Qots 4-0 in scottish cup.
A week later he scored his first goal away to Aberdeen in a 3-1 victory, wearing 8.
Since the squad numbers were introduced they are the only 3 players to wear that number for Celtic. McStay also made that number his own from 82 to 92 when selected.

rubbish sorry Leon. Just realised you were talking about Mcstay wearing the 8 jersey and not the 7.
Didn't read your post right. Sorry.

Ye ed. Sure it was 8 and 6 that were CM with 7 and 10 as wide men?

{Ed007's Note - The wingers were 7 & 11 in the old 4-4-2.}

Didn't Burley wear No.8?

Great shout malkybhoy.
I got my information from Celtic squad numbers transfer markt.
It gives all numbers and who played from 1992.
Number 8 caught my attention cos there was only 3 players listed.
There was a gap from 1997 to 2000 but they left out Burley.
I only noticed it cos i was listening to the phone in and they were looking for Celtic number 10 in the quiz, but Dembele left. Trick question.
I think you would be good at taking on the pundits.

Number 7 used to be number of choice for me, but lately there has been a few horrors associated with it such as Ljungberg, Miku and Cifti.

Numbers aren’t important it’s the wearing of the jersey 🍀.

07 Dec 2018 07:20:14
Really ed? Always thought it was other way about because burns worn 10.

{Ed007's Note - When I was younger the No.10 was your main playmaker and usually your star man before the likes of Larsson, Beckham and Ronaldo made No.7 so popular. Traditional No.10s mostly played between the midfield and attack but some were wingers or up front just off the main striker where 'second-striker' seems to be the modern term.
There's plenty more but some examples of classic No.10s are Maradona, Bergkamp, Baggio, Platini, Zidane, Gullit, Zico, Totti, Ronaldinho and Messi.}

Burley was 8 as I stupidly had the name and number on my top when I was a kid until it got swiftly changed to Larsson.

07 Dec 2018 12:35:46
No7 was my 1st position inside right and that was early eighties.

07 Dec 2018 13:08:19
Would anyone give forrest the number 7?

07 Dec 2018 17:23:58
Welshy a always thought the old no8 was an inside right mate.

07 Dec 2018 19:31:34
No10 my number of choice baggio maradona matthaus all wore it struggling to name a right good Celtic no10 Lambert wore it I'm sure when he 1st signed and Andy Thom but can't recall many more except Darren Jackson i also loved no9 but was never a striker.
