Not football related but any plumbers/ gas engineers etc I'm looking for some advice.
Looking at buying a house and seen one with warm air heating and water storage unit as opposed to modern combi boiler. I'm not sure how old the system and/ or house is exactly but just wondered if this should be avoided or if it's economical etc? Thanks Hail Hail.

{Ed007's Note - If it's what I'm thinking about my wee mate is in a private let across the road from me and his heating (is it storage heaters?) costs him a fortune to run.}

Agree0 Disagree0

No not electric storage heaters ed. It's warm air through vents throughout the house.

{Ed007's Note - 👍

24 Sep 2018 14:47:33
Some people like the warm air as it’s instant heat mate and the house is usually designed for warm air not so good if there is any rooms without a vent! Warm air units still get fitted mate and you can still get parts for them despite what the cowboys that are the gasboard will tell you! Warm air heats up fast mate but wouldn’t be as economical as a modern boiler.

@henrik avoid any place with storage heaters as ED007 says, also with these older un renovated houses the amount of work needed doing is prohibitive, just installing central heating alone will cost upwards of £3k depending on size of house.
My advice is keep looking.

Ed and Campsie Bhoy Keeping Fellow TIMS and Their Families Warm Cost Effectively! 👍😂☘️ PS: was down your neck of the woods for Mass yesterday CB.

24 Sep 2018 15:51:03
Cheers Bhoys. Like I say it's not storage heaters which cost a fortune to run, however its a water storage unit. I don't really understand all that and someone has told me it would be best to rip it out and replace with a water CH system with combi boiler. Which will obviously cost a few grand. Should I ask PL for a loan? Or Close Bros?

24 Sep 2018 15:55:19
If it is that type of system Henrik I would imagine that it airs/ serves the entire block? If there is no gas cooker in your kitchen you would need to check the property itself is served with gas or can be

As a Landlord your options could and will be limited if it serves more than one property mate.

24 Sep 2018 16:28:04
No its a detached house Jamie with a gas cooker. For some reason it's just not got gas CH so wondered if there are many drawbacks of warm air heating and water storage tank compared to a combi boiler.

JFP a was there today for a wee wonder I will be there for next month on October day! It wouldn’t be cheap mate to put in a new wet system as you would need new radiators boiler and pipes. What did home report say about it mate did it say it was working?

24 Sep 2018 17:17:38
Very old heating idea. It's a dry warm air pushed through the house. No ideal if anyone has allergies.

Cheap to run would check you can still get components. As local authorities ripped them out and replaced with combi. Very few components in them .

If it was me buying house I would rip out and install a combi.

24 Sep 2018 17:24:39
CB I’ll be there in October too for the crowning Mass and I’ll identify myself! 😂👍☘️.

Not a heating engineer bud but I’m a sparky. Anything that uses electricity for heating and hot water is going to cost more than gas. There are some really good warm air systems out there obv don’t know what you have. Storage heating is being faded out bhoys there are far better alternatives now such as intellirads that are oil filled and customise to the environment they are fitted.

24 Sep 2018 19:18:49
Just read you have gas in property no brainer central heating system n boiler bud.

{Ed007's Note - I remember when I was wee and we had to put an electric switch (called an emerger or something) on hours before we wanted a bath or that - it was caveman stuff in Fairhill back in the day 😁
Once there was a team of us dogging school in my mate's house with a carry-out to watch a bootleg copy of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and the lecky boy came to read the meter and my mate's dad had a metal spike up through the meter to stop it turning, even the pub down the bottom of my street got done about 4/5 years ago for running their lecky off the street light supply, you'd make a fortune in my scheme Welshy lol

Electric heating costs Approx 13-16 per kWh (unit) . Gas costs about 4.5p per kWh. Gas is about 4 times cheaper to run. A combination will pay for itself in about 2 3 years.

{Ed007's Note - Big Benny touting for business on here instead of pestering folk on the phone.....

24 Sep 2018 19:43:22
Ed it was an immercor which was shorthand for immersion heater I had wan tae 👍😂☘️.

{Ed007's Note - They were brutal man 😂

24 Sep 2018 19:45:25
thats ancient heating the warm air units. i thought they where all condemned. it il cost a few bucks to put a new central heating system in.

24 Sep 2018 19:46:32
Haha my uncle stayed in possil and sussed our if you put nail varnish remover over the old cards covers the 3 holes the meter stamped on them made aright few quid between that and ripping the copper out of empty closes 😂.

{Ed007's Note - 😂😂

24 Sep 2018 20:13:33
My Granda used to use an auld photograph negative in the side of the meter and it slowed the cycle of the wheel in the meter right down 😝 if the leccy man ever chapped the door the dug would go tonto and tell him he needed to put the dug away for his protection gave him plenty of time to get the negative out from the side of the meter 😂😂👍.

{Ed007's Note - My dad would have been all over anything like that and probably knew all the dodges but there's no way my mum would ever have let him do anything dodgy in the house. I've heard stories of people using a lollipop stick as well, and a magnet.}

24 Sep 2018 20:40:54
used be able turn gas meters round get free gas but yu need know what your doing lol.

{Ed007's Note - On my second day as an engineer an old boy showed me the exact steel and machining to make 'fake' pound coins that worked in cigarette and vending machines, sadly not puggies though. A Friday night at Hamilton Palace stocked me up for fags all week 😎
Are you still in Egypt? Why the name change?}

24 Sep 2018 21:16:12
