Reading some of the posts down the page many are mentioning spending money and get back challenging in CL. Those days are gone, we don't have the free income i. e either a sugar daddy to throw obscene amounts of cash at us or a tv deal to throw similar at us. If we spent every penny we have on transfers it wouldn't make a huge difference to the success we're currently having, ok we might win the league by 30 points instead of 15. I find it incredible that people think it's that simple to compete with the massive spending sides we are paupers when it comes to CL level. Playing devils advocate here just say we spent 30 or 40 million last month, a fortune in our world but not a lot in today's game and failed to qualify for CL, where does that leave us? those players still have to be paid their 50 grand a week for beating Dundee, StMirren, Livi etc for remainder of season. Yeah I want a few signings in but to talk of trying to compete at CL level is nonsense and dissing the Europa league as a crap tournament is baffling, this is where we belong at the moment whether we like it or not.

Stevie we spent that kind of cash on transfers and wages when Martin O'Neill was manager and we got to a European final. It's ambition. Spend and reap the rewards on and off the park.

To be honest Stevie l agree with you that Celtic can't spend stupid money on players. We don't have that kind of finance to buy the very top u need to compete against the top sides. However l do think we should be able to get players at a better standard then what's there at the min especially in the defence. I said in last year's champions league that we are simple making up the numbers like most teams in pot 3 and 4. We will still need players in especially the defence which gives up goals to even the poorest side in the Scotland. Apologies if l am wrong but l think Celtic have only had one clean sheet in the last 5 matches. The Europa league has some serious sides in it and will be a serious test if we can qualify for the group stages.

Too sensible. Come back after the window is shut and silly season is over with comments like that young man.

15 Aug 2018 11:11:07
Stan other teams were not paying
200 million for players or give 300 thousand a week in wages in Martin oneills day.

Do you really think we could have got players like
Lennon for 6 million now a days?

Not a chance.

A bhoy out of psg reserves costs 9 million.

Stevie agree with what’s been said, although with better scouting we wouldn’t need £40 million and we could at least put up a better showing. To look at some good buying over the years Lubo, Henrik, mjallby, Agatha, VVD, Wanyama, Forster, Hooper, Petrov, Ledley, Matthews, mulgrew, etc there's > 10 players and all for less than £20m and I think most would agree we would get a few results.

It’s not what we spend eg Raphael £5m, it’s who.

Man City, PSG, Man Utd etc all spent £100s millions and still not got success in Europe so it’s not the route to go down.

Another point, BR seemed to have full control of signings with Congerton. Perhaps with so many BR players not playing the board have got involved. From DDV, Gambia, Comper, Benyu, etc a lot has been spent on wages for what reason? Maybe it’s as Mourinho says managers are now just head coaches.

Get the scouts to earn their corn.

I couldn't care less what other clubs do kev. That's the problem currently infesting our club comparing what others do. Maybe if we focused on ourselves we would be in a better place. Always the poor little us defeatist attitude in this country.

15 Aug 2018 11:31:42
Jsean you could add Dembele, Armstrong, Ntcham, Sinclair, Griffiths and Rogic to that list of decent scouting not costing a fortune.

15 Aug 2018 11:33:23
It's a realist attitude Stan.

15 Aug 2018 11:37:40
Stan of coarse what other clubs can do is important.
We are all in the same market for players.

So we invest say 30 million.
What does it get you when youth players now cost 9 million?

Average players are costing 20 million

The days of getting seasoned pro's for 5 or 6 million are gone.

15 Aug 2018 11:42:39
To people with no ambition it is.

15 Aug 2018 11:52:08
There are plenty of places to go find talented players. U don't have to go to the over rated and over prices premier league to find players kev. Look at VVD and big Victor as a example.

15 Aug 2018 12:43:28
Ter 161 both VVD and Victor were not quality experienced champions league players.

And that is what people like Stan are calling for.
They don't want under a million 20 year old players that are prospects.
They don't want 22 year old 3 million pound gambles that haven't won anything and are inexperienced

They want players that have been there and done it.

We would never have had van djyk or big Victor if some of the fans on here were incharge.

15 Aug 2018 13:10:57
Did i say get rid of the 'projects' we have? No. If we added quality experienced players to play alongside the 'projects' we currently have then we might have done better.

Kev all you are doing is naming the 'projects' who made us cash. How about naming the list that never kicked a ball.

15 Aug 2018 13:51:47
I didn't name anyone. It was other people that named players.
I just informed them that they players didn't fall into the category of players you want to sign.

15 Aug 2018 15:14:00
Kev reading your posts we may as well just pack it in. AEK are not a great side. We should beat them. We are not asking for £20mill players but over the last 18 months we have not strengthened at the back. We are weaker than last season as a whole but when a poster mentions that you argue we are stronger than last year because players have improved? Who is better than last year? We need additions.

15 Aug 2018 21:16:40
Stan, To spend the equivalent nowadays to get that quality of player like Sutton, Hartson, Thompson and Lennon you would be looking at over 100 million . Not mentioning O'Neil inheriting Larsson.
