Possibly going to get get shot down for this post but other than for the financial reward of the Champions League I think I'd prefer to see us have a go at the Europa league this season. Hear me out. Since we first qualified for he CL back in the O'Neil era we always punched above our weight. Parkhead became a fortress. We beat the likes of Juventus, AC Milan, Porto, Benfica, Barcelona, Lyon, Man Utd etc. Teams feared facing us at home. Fast forward to present day the gap between ourselves and the top European teams is just TOO big. I have attended the last 6 CL home games where we have achieved 1 draw and 5 defeats. We have also suffered heavy away defeats. Thinking about this season do I want to see our current side go up against Barca, Real Madrid, Bayern or PSG to name a few and get potentially humiliated. Not for me. We are a Europa League level club at best imo and so for me I wouldn't be disappointed if that's where we compete this season.

Agree6 Disagree1

Agree with most of that Ice Man, the only appeal with playing in the CL nowadays is the cash. The competition has changed massively in the last 5 years and has become quite torturous watching us in it. There is nothing we can do about the growing gulf. There's probably 20 of the 32 teams that have a single player that cost more than our first 11.

Would rather get pumped in the champions league for the money and finish 3rd in the group stage to drop into the Europa league👍.

I hear what you are saying. The gap now is enormous. But, we have been up against since day one as a club. This is not different. With a little added quality the arses being handed to us will reduce. We will be able to throw a couple of punches as well as take a right few.

What Rogers wants, like all of us, is to give ourselves more a fighting chance. To me even getting there is a brilliant achievement. If we could take that additional step that allowed us to seriously contend for 3rd spot in the group and achieve it, it allows us to drop into the EL with our heads held high and give it a real go. That’s passing oot material for me.

To be able to take all the best on. Maybe not win many, if any, but they leave knowing that the Glasgow Celtic to them on, with fight and skill and heart.

That’s the Celtic I love, the Aye dae ye feckin think so, attitude.

We can achieve that. I absolutely believe that. Shoot as high as you can and that means become a recognised CL team, who win the EL every three years. :)

If we get the result on Tuesday I think we are on our way. I think we can.

Fair point ice my thought process at the start of the season is qualify for champions league make the money then hopefully drop into Europa would like UEFA to scrap both comps and 6 league to start up played across tues wed Thurs 16 teams in each league
League 1a and 1b on Tues
Super league a and b on Wed
League 2a and 2b on a Thursday
Top 2 then qualify for semi finals

If a team from a country is promoted to league above and doesn't qualify through domestic football then a playoff between the 2 could decide what league each team goes into
Might be confusing but no more than a champions competition containing teams that have never win their domestic league.

We should be a strong Europa side, but we also shouldn't be scared of regularly getting humiliated in the CL every year.

There's a reason, because we chose to downsize.

10 Aug 2018 21:20:57
It's geared for the 4 big nations. eufa are a joke how they treat the other nations is a disgrace. but the money if you get in really consolidates the club and a hate saying that but it keeps us way ahead of the manky mob.

10 Aug 2018 21:22:24
What a stupid comment Tesla "we chose to downsize". How do you work that one out? If we downsized Tierney, Dembele and Edouard wouldn't be with us this season for starters.

I appreciate we get hammered of different teams in the champions league but why not take the cash on offer if we can . We can’t continually moan about the difference in budgets, we are on a different playing field to most of Scotland but they still turn up, and give us a game or at least make it tough for us. What do we do, drop into Europa then complain when champions league teams drop back into it? What’s to say we are good enough for the Europa? We lost the first game we played in it last year . Unfortunately even teams like Ajax are now spending 10-15 million on players so we just have to get on with it. Take the cash, try and organise to make it harder for the teams we play and eventually improve by spending some of the money we make 🤷‍♂️ ( in an ideal world, mr Lawell )

10 Aug 2018 21:59:10
The financial gap has nothing to do with the hammerings, they were because the teams were set up the wrong way or the wrong tactics and team selections were used, take this game in Athens, if the right team is selected and the right tactics are used, we will cruise it, if not, it's down to the Europa league,

10 Aug 2018 22:12:28
Wouldn't it be great if we could qualify for the CL group stages, take the cash and then voluntarily drop into the EL without playing a CL game? That way we'd have the reward without the thumpings that go with it lol HH.

{Ed007's Note - Prostitution don't work that way :)

You're right ed if you want the money be prepared to get f##k## 😂😂.

{Ed007's Note - That's basically what the CL is to us.}

Reader of this forum for a long time so first time poster.

First of all well done to the Ed's for having the patience of saints!

Good post Iceman and feel you have some good points. Our young Celts would gain great experience in the Europa League as I don't really see what they gain from hammerings in the Champions League. A few good results in the Europa League and who knows maybe a good run into quarter/ semi finals in a couple of years time. On champions League night though I hate when we are not in it but maybe the sensible more realistic approach is Thursday night football. HH.

10 Aug 2018 22:53:07
Aindoh financial gap has nothing to do with it? PSG’s front 3 cost £400m but yeah it was our tactics that were the issue 😂.

10 Aug 2018 23:10:49
Nobody is asking us to win the CL, but 7-1 etc is not acceptable. Don't care if it's the 2002 Brazil team we are facing.

We also had Biton at the back .

We have never outspent these sides but managed to give them games and have respect and excitement.

Now it's just defeated attitude in the way we spend and accept humiliations.

11 Aug 2018 00:46:40
Did Germany not spank Brazil in the world cup in recent times 7-1. Even the best get spanked from time to time. In the semi final of a tournament as well.

11 Aug 2018 06:28:39
Yes, and how did PSG do in the tournament?, were they beaten by a team with a more expensive frontline, it's all nonsense, just because somebody pays X amount for a player doesn't makes that player X times better than another player, football is a team game,
