Quite happy with Armstrong signing an extension to his contract. A lot of negativity still seems to be circling though. I don't really see the point of a longer contract as going on what's happening with Virgil/ costa it doesn't mean an awful lot. He can now focus on the season which is a long time in football, could easily get an injury or lose form, so let's be happy he's here for the time being.

{Ed007's Note - Do you think Southampton would be asking for £70 + million for VVD if he was going into the last year of his deal? Remember we forced VVD to stay an extra year because of the length of contract he had with us. Contract lengths are very important to clubs when planning for the future and more importantly the fees they ask.}

Van dijk signed a 6 year contract eh? I think if he had a full year they'd still ask for crazy money. At least 50m. There was talk of upwards of 40mil for Sanchez and he's only got a year left. So who knows what teams would ask for. Southampton won't let van dijk rot for 5 years, and will accept an offer soon. that's why i think his contract is irrelevant.

{Ed007's Note - There's a lot more to a contract than how long it's for but if they're irrelevant why do clubs bother with them? Southampton reason for asking so high a fee is because of the length of contract van Dijk signed only last year, it's very relevant when it comes to transfer negotiations.
I agree that van Dijk will move soon enough to Chelsea or maybe Man City but if he doesn't Southampton are happy enough for him to sit and rot until he realises how much of a knob he's being. Their chairman has said the player isn't for sale and they refused his transfer request - all things they can do because he's under contract to them.}

I agree van dijk is being a knob, but a team will never let a player rot on 100k a week for 5 years. Player has too much power. In the Armstrong case it stops him going on a bosman if he accepted a contract in january, so that's all that really matters.

{Ed007's Note - OK then.}
