With the sad news about Big Billy McNeil I know all fans will wish him some kind of respite from this terrible illness.
Although sadly, his memory might be fading, he has given all us Celtic fans some great memories.
I was lucky enough to see him play in the flesh and remember all his goals mostly with his head. Two that stick out in my memory was big Jock's first cup win against Dunfermline, then a decent team, Billy scored with a last minute header to make it 3-2, also the winner he scored against Vojvidina again a last minute winner that took Celtic to the semi finals on the way to Lisbon.
He was a Celtic fan first, and tells the story of travelling on the Bellshill supporters bus to games, can you imagine a modern day player doing that?
When they redeveloped Celtic Park they wanted a name for the Rangers end, and a fanzine did a vote and Billy's name was out in front, but when contacted, he said no as he played in a team and the Lisbon Lions won and lost as a team, so the stand was called The Lisbon Lions Stand.
Thank you Billy McNeil for such wonderful memories.
I will end with the song we Celtic fans sang at the time
OH THERE'S ONLY ONE KING BILLY, THAT'S MCNEIL,
YES THERE'S ONLY ONE KING BILLY, ONLY ONE KING BILLY, THERE'S ONLY ONE KING BILLY THAT'S MCNEIL.

Yes but the serious question is if heading the ball is a contributory factor in the onset of dementia and other. Debilllitating illnesses, something should be, has to be done, I posted earlier that not heading the ball would change the whole game, but I think it might be a good thing, it is football after all,

A true Legend in every sense of the word. Horrible disease, all the best to him. Btw, that's one of my favourite chants.

Such sad news on the real celtic captain. I think on the heading the ball argument that is around. The old heavy balls made big difference. The balls are that light now I really don't think would make much difference not heading them now. But I think it should be band in kids football for 2 reasons. 1 the health reasons as even light modern ball could cause kids damage and 2 would help improve the techniques of our kids with the ball being kept on the deck.

i seen one of the huns posted "why do we have to make a statement about mcneill? " aye they are lovely people,. i remember billy punching a atletico madrid player going up the tunnel in 74 after they had kicked wee jinky about the park all night, i was only 7 but i can remember the whole team getting involved it was brilliant, then i remember the 75 cup final when he got carried around hampden on his team mates shoulders when he played his last game for us, a fantastic man and very humble with it.
