The rumours of Steven Gerrard coming in January seem to be resurfacing.

If we could get him and he wants to come, would you want us to get him?

Personally I don't think he will offer us much on the pitch (may be wrong) so on a purely football argument I don't see the point in signing him as he will likely command a big wage.

That being said, I think he could be a great role model to the youngsters, he would raise the profile of Celtic and would sell a lot of shirts.

For these reasons, I am undecided if I want him but willing to back the manager whatever his decision may be.

Said it the other nite, Gerrards well past it! His big thing was the way he got up and down the park and scored crucial goals, both of those things have long since gone now! Would bring nothing to the team IMO. great player in his day but that day was a long time ago! Not for me.

10 Nov 2016 19:40:14
Agreed Wiss81-SG was a tremendous player in his day and right up there with Paul McStay but that was then and this is now. It's one thing taking a chance on an aging centre half where it's easier to play but defos not a central midfielder. It's time to recruit a younger and the next Broony 🍀.

Its all about pace and fitness past 33. He isn't a serious option to start next year so isn't a serious target.

10 Nov 2016 21:57:13
We don't need Gerrard in the team. No more over 35 year old players no matter how good they were. no matter where you look, these deals just don't work. Give me one player over 35 who has come to a club and been a success for more than a few months. We all talk about the influence they may have on other players and I get that but overall they never represent value. Big big wages, never get through a season.

always seems to pop up.

rumours for - the way commons is completely frozen out

rumours against - he said he would never ever want to play against Liverpool and if he signs for celtic he could (unless it was a ludicrously short deal) in which case, how would that benefit us.

we need the midfield moussa - a young hungry player with something to prove - a future captain, someone to replace broony long term.

and Stevie G, Snoddy, McCarthy ain't that.

10 Nov 2016 22:34:36
Well Stevie G, aint.

10 Nov 2016 22:38:58
Digbanger I'd say 22/ 26 is what we should be looking at. Mccarthy age wise is there. If it pans out he will cost less than you would think.

10 Nov 2016 22:51:01
So what's he going to cost then rglen? Sounds like youre in the know!

11 Nov 2016 08:47:14
Watch SG play for galaxy he's by there's nothing left he'd be a terrible signing and on a huge wage waist of time imo.

11 Nov 2016 11:48:50
Agree with all of the above.

SG is no longer the player he was. He'd only (huge wages aside) take up a shirt that someone else could be making their own.

Pass.

What we need/ should do is look for, as DigiB said above, a hungry young M-Dembele type player. Pay that little bit extra now (in terms of wages and very possibly/ probably transfer fee) and get the benefits on and off the field across the next few years.

There is no reason we can't go and sign someone like a Tielemans* etc. Even if you pay, 5/ 6/ 7 million now, you can expect to at least double your money in the future.

*Before anyone comments on YT being a 20m+ player already, I'm using him as an example, given how highly rated he's been for the past 3/ 4 years. Of course, we couldn't get him now, but could we have had tried a few years ago? Either way, this is the type of player we should be looking at.

Tpp, you mean a guy like McCarthy was when he was at Hamilton, a blind man could see he was (and still is) , a talent, maybe if we spent a bit more time looking at the up and comers in Scotland, another gem might turn up,

11 Nov 2016 13:16:46
@Aindoh - Celtic tried to get McCarthy when he was at Hamilton from what I have been told. My understanding is Celtic offered a retainers fee and said they would sign him after another season. However, Hamilton wanted to sell as they wanted the full amount and McCarthy wanted to leave.

With regards to signing up and coming players, I know Maxime Lopez from Marseille is a good young talent and his contract is up at the end of this season. The same is true of Berahinho but doubt we could match his wages and he will most likely go to another team in the EPL.

11 Nov 2016 13:17:36
Yeah, I completely agree; although there is (or at least was) a snobbery amongst some of our fans as to buying Scottish talent.

That said, hindsight can be (and often is) a wonderful thing - you did say Rodgers "would be a disaster" after all ;)

11 Nov 2016 15:27:21
Don't think I said those exact words.

11 Nov 2016 13:47:10
RabMac, I don't know much more than has been written -- maybe ED can shed some light on it and I'm being unfair on the boy -- but I'd avoid Berahino like the plague. Good player, loads of talent/ potential, but looks to be a bag of trouble and is nowhere near good enough to justify the risk.

That said, I nabbed him in FM for Celtic and he was a revelation :P.

{Ed007's Note - Berahino has a bit of an ego and his attitude causes a lot of problems off the field.}

11 Nov 2016 16:01:10
"Going for Brendan Rodgers is a joke [insert Ronnie bashing before finishing up the original point] as for Rodgers, he would be a disaster. "

11 Nov 2016 17:07:37
Think I had had a few (too many) .

11 Nov 2016 18:03:49
I'm just teasing buddy. The only reason I even remembered that conversation is because ED and I were chatting about Jim Duffy - and anytime I think of Jim Duffy, I think of Kirsty Gallacher (thankfully it's not the same in reverse) !

Full disclosure, you weren't the only one who voiced their doubts. I said at the time that BR wouldn't have been my first choice - and that I'd be shocked (and applaud) the board for approaching him as a statement of intent. I didn't think they would, nor did I think he'd accept if they did. Clearly I was wrong on both counts.

11 Nov 2016 21:11:51
The Liverpool ed, put a lot of doubts in my mind, but am sure I did say that I would give Brendan all my backing once he did sign, bit the opposite of Ronnie, I thought he was an imaginative forward thinking signing, but that didn't last long once I realised he didn't have a clue what he was doing.
