As much as I have slated Mulgrew he had a good game today well done Charlie thought the penalty was a bit light but apart from that the Ref had a decent game l thought RD got the game plan right to.

I've said before and I'll say it again, big mulgrew is our best centre half without a doubt! Now I know that's not to hard with some of the defenders we've got lol. just feel the big man is calm on the ball, can make a pass and chip in with a goal to! Keep him and Erick at centre half for the run in and I think the double will be ours! And big mulgrew knows what Celtic are all about and that for me is a big plus!

softest pen ever witnessed in my opinion if that's the standard now we will have 10+ pens per game.

Mulgrew big problem is his lack of pace.
With how far up our full backs play he gets exposed and good teams will punish it.

12 Mar 2016 15:29:35
My only gripe with Mulgrew and Sviatchenko at CB are neither of them have pace. However, I would prefer a lack of pace to Boyata lol.

12 Mar 2016 15:49:50
I agree about the lack of pace. He would be better in a back 3 for me, ideally as a sweeper! Even playing the left of a 3 with someone covering behind him. He's been caught out a few times in Europe in Europe in a back 4. I think it was away to Zagreb or Legia he was to blame for 3 goals!

Agree about his pace. but ambrose and boyata are both quicker than him and the 2 of them are woeful! No point having pace if u can't tackle or pass! Mulgrew and Erick from here on in for me! Keep a settled back line for these last 10 11 games.

You're right about pace, some great Centre halfs weren't the quickest - Bobby Moore, Koeman, Beckenbauer spring to mind, even big Billy and George Connelly, the difference is Mulgrew doesn't read the game that well, his biggest asset is passing. Also Ronny plays a high line, the centre halfs play on the halfway line so if you don't have pace then you're fecked. Boyata and Ambrose shouldn't even be used as examples bacause they are the 2 softest/ nicest central defenders I've seen in a Celtic jersey!

Delphic is right, the reason some players become centre halves is because they are not the quickest . If the team attacks as a team and defends as a team and if the centre half can read the game well then the lack of pace won't be found out . For almost the whole game today, because P T wern't exactly pressurising him big Charlie looked immaculately.

@Old Bhoy - I hear what you are saying and in some respects you are correct. However, the system we play requires at least one CB to have pace as we often get hit on the counter with only the 2 CBs at the back. If the attacker has pace then we are in real trouble.

Rabmac, we are supposed to have a centre midfielder back covering as well. Now I suppose if the opposition play it brilliantly we could be caught out, but even with pacey centre halves, we will be caught out if the centre halves haven't got top class positional sense . Mulgrew might have that, I watched him carefully today and he was sometimes moving towards were the ball was kicked towards, a split second before it was kicked.

I know last season Bitton was often sitting in front of the CBs and even saw him slot in to 3 man back 3 at times. However, that does not seem to be happening this season. Also last season we had VVD and Denayer who are both quick and excellent defenders, which covered a multitude of sins in my opinion.

Back to Bitton, not sure why he is not performing this role this season. The cynic is me says Lawwell has told Deila that Bitton needs more goals to bump up his price for when he gets sold in the summer. However, I accept this may not be the case and it may be because Ronnie has changed his tactics slightly or he is having to cover for Brown, who has been poor.

Cynically u surprise me Rabmac as I always had u down as one of our intelligent posters, but I suppose reading as much rubbish as we do on here, it can't be a surprise if a good man makes a mistake .
Rabmac could u list out the names of top Celtic players that Mr Lawwell has sold within the last five years, that hadn't publicly demanded a move from Celtic .
Do u think it is good for club morale to hold on to players who are demanding a move . I must say Rabmac, u disappointed me.
