Does nobody think we have the squad for a 3-5-2 I think this would greatly suit the players we have and bring the best out of our attacking options, at the minute we constantly go up the wings and cross the ball this is pointless when you have 1 uptop would also give us more support in the middle where we are moving forward as one and leaving the hole behind, just a thought as I don't think this formation works with the players we havr.

People have romantic ideas about the 3-5-2 because we had a great team when O'Neil played it. However, many fans seem to forget how easy it is to negate the 3-5-2. The weakness of this formation is to play diagonal/ straight balls over the top to fast wingers and this will totally expose the defence.

The first team I recall finding this weakness were Porto and they absolutely destroyed us that night. After that McLeish used the same tactic against us, with Lovenkrands destroying us down the wing.

I think formation matters, only to a point though. I've always said, - good players can adapt, and play in many positions! For eg if Forrest and GMS were actually any good and/ or consistent they could play wide in a 442 or a 4231 or a 433! The problem for me is the players are bang average! What Ronny sees in Forrest and McGregor is truly baffling. Forrest has been winging it for 5 years, and if McGregor didn't have a good shot you would think he was a half decent lower league player! We have bought players simply because they were available/ Scottish! The last 2 years have been hell, between Lennons final year, and most of Ronny's reign, well if I was Lawwell I certainly wouldn't be proud! The more I think about him the more my blood boils because every time he gives an interview it's obviously all planned with questions to suit then he crawls away. I honestly don't know what he actually does! I've always stuck up for Desmond, purely because he was there with Fergus, he didn't talk about it, he did it! He backed the club with hard cash! I'm not expecting him just to give us free money, he probably knows if you start that it can have a snowball affect which will mean we need more free cash. What I do blame him for though Is Leaving Lawwell and Park to run things! In saying that I wouldn't be surprised if Lawwell dresses up as who we now know as Park so the blame can be deflected! I have never heard Park speak, and technically he should be in charge of all football operations! If they are actually different people, it's a certainty Lawwell is making the decisions, even although he's not qualified! The fact he gave Ronny the job because he was good at the interview is also incredible! The world is full of people who talk well but can't do much! Bankier is another who comes across as an egomaniac! I'd prefer Desmond even brought his own people in, whether from Ireland or wherever, and appointed a proper Director Of Football, with a pedigree!

With the problems we have at the back a 352 would leave Gordon rattling like a battery hen. MON had Mjallby, Joos, Bobo and Varga McNamara and Agathe to choose from currently we have Ambrose Boyata and Lustig as our best 3. MoN had a ridiculous midfield compared with what we've got and then John Chris and God upfront. If Jozo and Sviatchenko can eventually form a partnership with Tierney and hopefully Janko if he returns looking as good as he did, we will be in good shape for a back 4. Need Brown back to his best but even if we get that I reckon there's not much left in him.

I totally agree that personnel and ability matters much more than formation and although I would like to see us vary our tactics and line-up a lot more with the abundance of players we have, I do think this is the weakest and most incompetent group of defenders/ goalie we have had for many years. [I excuse young Tierney from that btw. ].

Everyone saw this coming when we knew VVD and Denayer were both going. Still don't think Boyata is a lost cause, needs a decent partner. I'm really pinning a lot of hopes on Sviatchenko and Jozo liking up well but aye, this is the worst back 4 (KT excepted) in as long as I can remember. Majstorovic would walk straight into our defence just now (and he was not capable of doing much more than walking! )

Sorry JT2 I have to disagree as I think the system we play leaves our defenders exposed, so it is hard to judge how good/ bad they are.

This is one of the few problems I have with Deila, his reluctance to adapt his philosophy to suit the players he has. Don't get me wrong, I do think Deila has improved all of our players technically but I think many of them are still falling short of the required level to play the way he wants on a consistent basis.

This is why lots of our moves break down or we give away possession.

If you have 3 decent and mobile defenders can play quickly and know how to pick up good positions then 3 at the back is workable. Rather that than poor full back and poorer still right modifieder for the sake of a formation

Take the players you have and get the best of them on be park and find a system that works for them

We have square pegs in round holes all over the park at the moment for the benefit of 4 1 4 1 or 4 1 2 3 or whatever the heck you call it.

MO'N was desperately trying to move away from the 3/ 5/ 2 at least for some games but the players had got use to 3 centre halves and were not able to adjust . Few if any teams use 3 centre backs now on a permanent stage, some may switch to it on a one off basis.
