If we could have signed 1 player we missed out on or were heavily linked with who would it have been? (Obv within reasonable budget constraints.)

I remember O'Neil tried to sign Hleb from Stuttgart and Kompany from Anderlecht.
Also remember we tried to sign Rivaldo but wanted him to come on trial first, which he refused to do.
So between these 3 and Ginola for me

I remember the kompany rumours would have been a great signing but doubt he'd have stayed more than 2 years. I agree wish we'd kept given could imagine him being with us his entire career if we'd kept him for a bit longer

So many, many old board nonsense, some towards end of careers, mostly never going to happen but shows years back we could talk about signing some of the best around, eg Paul McGrath, Ronnie Whelan, Bratseth, Dragan Stoykovich.

Rayman, I remember us watching him at Lech Poznan but no real surprise he went to Dortmund. For £4m too. Big IF but if they hadn't of been interested.
Can't believe I forgot Shearer. Legend. We were better with Larsson though. Had no idea about Ginola either. Both would be in a dream XI of players i've seen live.

I remember rumours about Paul Ince, Patrick Berger and Michael Owen as well, but the best might have been a link with Alfredo De Stefano in the late 60's?
{Ed001's Note - I remember Paddy was close to moving to Celtic at one point. Berger I mean. Trouble was he was never keen on the move to Scotland. Probably lucky for me mam as she would have had to watch Scottish footie to get her fix of him, as she was a bit obsessed with him. He was some player him, best I have ever played against, though it was only a kickabout at Melwood, his touch was sublime. You would have loved him at Celtic.}
