After reading people compare biton and wanyama got me thinking Who's been everyone's number 1 midfielder in the last 30 years ano it's a hard 1 but mine has to be lennon

{Ed007's Note - Paul McStay.}

Agree2 Disagree0

Lennon?? That's just utter nonsense he was decent at best.

If Lennon was not a Celtic die hard no one would remember him.

We have had so many great midfielders he would not even make my top 10.

For me , it's McStay all day long just a pity the team around him in his later years was not great.

Stan petrov

i was young but I still remember and it has to be the maestro …. very very very very rarely put a foot wrong and not just because he did the barry ferguson side way pass…he could drive at you…pass it long…make the pass that very few others could see ….and had a real aura about him

i was delighted when he opted to prolong his celtic stay but a little bit of me wishes he had strutted his stuff with juventus or someone of that ilk

Not even in doubt! The maestro by a mile! Best I've seen in my life time!

stretch it to forty years. bobby murdoch
if it has to be 30, agree with Ed. paul mcstay by a long way
honourable mention. moravcek. too short a time with us and at the tail end of his career BUT what a player

06 Aug 2015 22:42:34
I thought paul mcstay but lennon was more to do with what I enjoy watchting players with a bit of aggression does the simple things leads by example not scared to put the boot in a younger Roy Keane type I was a big fan of mcstay and rate him highly but I never seen him as much as I've seen lennon aswell each to there own and all that lol

06 Aug 2015 22:47:57
I'm a 90's baby so for me it has to be Petrov or Nakamura.

06 Aug 2015 22:55:11
McStay was brilliant from what I remember and seen on DVDs but somehow still can't bring myself to forgive him for that penalty against raith on my 10th birthday. Was heartbroken!

06 Aug 2015 23:01:27
Mcstay was immense! But I'd say wanyama 2nd and Lennon doesn't get enough credit was a player I'd say under rated! He was as important as Larson in getting to the eufa cup final! Lennon controlled the MF perfectly!

06 Aug 2015 23:01:46
Got to be Paul McStay. I remember going to an Old Firm game where they ( Rangers ) were trying to put Derek Ferguson up against Paul. Well what can I say Paul ran the game from the off.

The guy is nothing less than Class. He made the game look as easy as he played it.

06 Aug 2015 23:13:01
Lubo is by far the best we have seen in midfield in the last 30 years. Mc stay was brilliant but Lubo was better! Hail Hail

06 Aug 2015 23:17:18
Bobby Murdoch was the greatest and I would say after that Paul McStay .

06 Aug 2015 23:22:02
kevt. very harsh on lennon imo the epitome of the holding mf i'd loved to have seen seen him in a mf with the best who imo was mcstay

06 Aug 2015 23:23:27
Mcstay

06 Aug 2015 23:38:17
Cannot believe Tommy Burns not got a mention OP is YOUR No.1 calibre of the man IMO should be the next one to get a long standing recognition

Loved McStay and Collins when I was younger and had a soft spot for Burley in his first season. That said, my favourite was always Paul Lambert. Very underrated contribution.

07 Aug 2015 00:04:42
Oh and honorable mention for Andy Thom.

07 Aug 2015 00:59:36
I would go with lambert and moravcik I thought they two were total class.

07 Aug 2015 06:13:47
I would say between McStay and Lambert for me they both read the game so well and the game always seem to flow through these two.

Kev T I think you are being a little over the top towards Lennons lack of ability. I remember having many arguments with fellow Celts during Lennons time playing in the middle, loads would say he offered little to the team and always looked to come back the way. I thought Lennon was great in doing what he done, he was always in there fighting to get the ball and then distributing it more than he lost it.

Another strong point of his was dictating the tempo of the game, when we needed to slow the play right down Lennon would be the one taken it in and short passes out. I think all teams need a player like this in their team.

I rated him more as a player than a manager.

Lambert and mcstay in central midfield is the one I always dreamed of , the two best I have seen live in the hoops

07 Aug 2015 09:04:42
Has to be Lambert or Stan for me lambert was a far better all round player than lennon.

07 Aug 2015 10:25:12
McStay for me without a doubt. I was a massive fan of Collins as well.

07 Aug 2015 13:58:43
It was tongue in cheek , was just fishing.

Some people just love to bite your hand off if you slag someone like Lennon. He was never a favourite of mine but of course he played his role well and was just as important as many others in the UEFA cup run.

I'm with poetics first post.

I loved John Collins (not so keen now) and Burley (even less keen on him now). I had number 11 on the back of possibly my favourite Celtic shirt ever, 1995 Scottish cup final shirt. Remember getting the number 8 on the back of another strip on flag day and Burley scoring a hat trick that day.
